  • International Nurses Day has been celebrated by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) since 1965.
  • Almost twelve years before that, Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, proposed that the then US President proclaim a ‘Nurses’ Day’.
  • However, it was not approved.
  • Almost 20 years later, in January 1974, May 12 was chosen as the day to celebrate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale.

  • The report ranks health infrastructure in India’s most urbanized eight cities — Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai Metropolitan Region(MMR), and Pune — based on Housing.com’s City Health Card.
  • India also has the lowest number of doctors (0.86) per 1,000 people while other major economies have between 2-4 doctors per 1,000 people, it added.
  • The top-ranked city Pune also scored significantly high on parameters such as ease of living, water quality, and performance, and sustainable initiatives taken by its local government.
  • With nearly 3.2 hospital beds per 1,000 people, Ahmedabad is ranked second in the list.
    Bengaluru is ranked third despite a high number of hospital beds per 1,000 people and its top ranking in the ease of living index.
  • The city’s score on parameters such as air quality, water quality, and availability, and municipal performance index pulled down its ranking.
  • Mumbai Metropolitan Region ranks fourth on Housing.com’s City Health Card, with parameters such as the number of beds, air quality, and liveability pulling its overall score down.
  • Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata occupy the fifth, sixth, and seventh positions, respectively.

  • The World Bank Board of Executive Directors today approved a US$100 million grant from the International Development Association (IDA) and a US$27 million grant from the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP) to improve food and nutrition security.
  • The new grant will focus on delivering immediate support to beneficiary households through Cash-for-Works (CFW) opportunities and provision of nutritious food products to vulnerable households, as well as building the longer-term resilience of Yemeni households by supporting the restoration of agricultural production and value chain building activities, to increase the sales of nutritious crops, livestock, and fish products.
  • In 2021, over 2.25 million children under the age of five are threatened with acute malnutrition; 395,000 of them are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition and could die without treatment.
  • Integrated Food Security and Nutrition Analysis mark a 16 percent increase in acute malnutrition and a 22 percent increase in severe acute malnutrition among children under five compared to last year’s estimate.
  • An additional concern is that more than one million pregnant and breastfeeding women are projected to suffer from acute malnutrition during 2021 in Yemen.

  • Speaking after launching the Ola Foundation – GiveIndia Foundation initiative, Deputy Chief Minister and State COVID task force head C N Ashwath Narayana, said to start with, this service was being implemented at Malleshwaram and Koramangala.
  • ”This will be given only for those whose oxygen saturation is below 94.
  • This is not required and will not be given for those whose oxygen-level is above 94,”.
  • The service is rolled out in Bengaluru with an initial set of 500 oxygen concentrators.
    Ola and GiveIndia would scale it up across the country with upto 10,000 concentrators in the coming weeks, Narayana said.
  • Those who require oxygen (oxygen saturation below 94) need to log into the Ola app and request for an oxygen concentrator by providing a few basic details.
  • Once submitted, the request would be validated and Ola would then pick up the concentrator via one of its cabs with a specially trained driver and bring it to the doorstep of those who placed request within 30 minutes.
  • The home-isolated beneficiary shall have to pay a refundable amount of Rs 5,000 per concentrator.
  • Once the patient gets better and no longer requires the concentrator, Ola would pick up the device and return it to GiveIndia to give it to the next patient who needs it.

  • PM CARES Fund has granted sanction for procurement of 1,50,000 units of ‘Oxycare’ system developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at a cost of Rs 322.5 crore.
  • The Oxycare system delivers supplemental oxygen based on the SpO2 levels and prevents the person from sinking into a state of Hypoxia, which can be fatal.
  • Under this sanction, 1,00,000 manual and 50,000 automatic Oxycare systems along with NRBM (non-rebreather mask) masks are being procured.
  • A non-rebreather mask is a device that ensures the delivery of oxygen in emergency situations.
  • The system is indigenously developed by the Defence Bio-Engineering and Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL) in Bengaluru for soldiers posted at extreme high-altitude areas.

  • With the objective to promote the Make in India initiative, the National Programme on Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery Storage is expected to attract foreign and domestic investment of Rs 45,000 crore, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.
  • The proposal aims to achieve manufacturing of 50 gigawatts of battery storage, he said, adding, these incentives will be available to those companies having higher production and sales capability.
  • ACCs are the new generation of advanced storage technologies that can store electric energy either as electrochemical or as chemical energy and convert it back to electric energy as and when required.
  • This is a win-win formula for climate change, green growth, Indian philosophy of Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, Javadekar said, adding it will bring in foreign as well as domestic investment and create more job opportunities.
  • The manufacturing of ACCs is expected to facilitate demand for electric vehicles (EVs), which are proven to be significantly less polluting.

  • The 167.25 Crore rupee annual work plan was submitted to Project Approval Board (PAB-2021) of Ministry of Education for consideration.
  • It is also proposed to vocationalize the education in 13 schools, strengthen the vocational education infrastructure in 29 existing Schools and strengthening of DIET and Sports Infrastructure in the schools.
  • Before the commencement of academic year, in Nine zones of the UT Ladakh, a mega community campaign on enrolment drive in the catchment area of 27 Higher Secondary Schools and 57 High Schools was conducted.
  • 4,500 teachers of Ladakh, have completed training in all the 18 modules in NISHTHA Program on DIKSHA. Similarly, 3600 teachers have attended capacity building training IMPACT’ by the NCERT.
