5. Frauds reported by PSBs decline to how many crore in FY22?

- The amount involved in fraud cases reported by public sector banks (PSBs) has come down to Rs 3,204 crore in the last fiscal from Rs 28,884 crore in 2017-18.
- As per the RBI data, PSBs reported 5,624 cases of fraud in 2017-18, involving Rs 28,884 crore.
- In 2018-19, a total of 9,092 cases were reported amounting to Rs 26,720 crore, while in 2019-20, the number of frauds rose to 11,074, involving a monetary value of Rs 21,170 crore.
- In 2020-21, PSBs reported 4,680 fraud cases of Rs 7,306 crore, which declined to 2,369 cases corresponding to Rs 3,204 crore in 2021-22.
- The minister said their net profit increased to Rs 66,519 crore in 2021-22 against Rs 31,820 crore in 2020-21.
- The gross NPAs (non-performing assets) of these banks fell to Rs 5,41,750 crore from Rs 6,16,616 crore in 2020-21.
- It stood at Rs 58,697 crore in 2020-21 and Rs 32,293 crore in 2019-20.

- Tokenisation replaces an actual or clear card number with an alternative code called the ‘token’.
- A tokenised card transaction is considered safer as the actual card details are not shared with the merchant during transaction processing, which helps cut the chances of information leakage.
- More than 200 million tokens have been created across networks, including Mastercard, since December 2021.
- Mastercard said it worked with 45,000 merchants, 34 issuing banks, 10 acquiring banks, and 30-plus token requestors (including all major payment aggregators) to create 90 million tokens for its users since December 2021.
- It has also collaborated with payment aggregators, such as Juspay, PayU, Razorpay, BillDesk, and Paytm, to enable merchants to process token-based transactions.

- The country’s largest public sector bank, the State Bank of India (SBI), has implemented a one-time password-based (OTP-based) cash withdrawal service.
- In a bid to protect the customers against ATM frauds, a withdrawal of or more than Rs 10,000 will now be possible only by entering the OTP in the ATM.
- If the OTP sent to the customer and the OTP entered by the one withdrawing money does not match, the ATM will not dispense any cash.
- Also, the OTP sent to the accountholder’s mobile number will only be valid for one transaction.
- The OTP-based withdrawal was launched by SBI originally on January 1, 2020.
- Several other banks are expected to follow suit.

- Energy major Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with M/s GreenkoZeroC Private Limited (Greenko), to jointly pursue opportunities in Renewables, Green Hydrogen, Green Ammonia and other derivatives of green hydrogen.
- The MoU, valid for two years, was inked in New Delhi by ONGC Director Onshore Shri Anurag Sharma and Greenko CEO & Managing Director Shri Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty.
This MoU is in line with the National Hydrogen Mission launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister in making India a global green hydrogen hub. - The activities envisaged under this MoU will contribute towards India’s target of producing of 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen per annum by 2030.
- This MoU will also act as a stepping stone for ONGC to achieve renewable energy targets as per its Energy Strategy 2040.

- The Ministry of Finance releases the Finance Commission recommended grants directly to the State governments and not to the Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
- The 14th Finance Commission had inter-alia recommended Rural Local Bodies (RLBs) grants for Gram Panchayats in all the States.
- For Andhra Pradesh, FC-XIV had recommended a total RLB grant of Rs 8,653.69 crore for the award period 2015-16 to 2019-20.
- Of this, Rs 8,124.40 crore was released to the State government.
- Based on the recommendations received from the nodal ministry and compliance of the stipulated conditions within the award period, basic grants for all the five years from 2015-16 to 2019-20 were released to AP.
- Performance grants (PG) for 2016-17 and 2017-18 were also released to the State government for eligible gram panchayats.
- However, performance grants for 2018-19 and 2019-20 could not be released to the State due to non-fulfilment of the stipulated conditions within the respective award years.
- No performance grant was recommended by FC-XIV for any State for 2015-16.
The award period of the FC-XIV ended on March 31, 2020. - No balance grant is payable to Andhra Pradesh now.
- From April 1, 2020, funds recommended by the 15th Finance Commission for the local bodies are being released to all States, including AP.
