History:

  • The history behind National Doctor’s Day dates back to the birth anniversary of Dr.Bidhan Chandra Roy, a renowned physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. Dr. Roy was born on July 1, 1882, and he dedicated his life to the medical profession, making significant contributions to the field of healthcare and public health.
  • This day also commemorates the birth anniversary of Dr.Bidhan Chandra Roy, a prominent figure in the medical field, and serves as a platform for discussions and activities that aim to enhance healthcare services and promote a healthier nation.
  • It was in his honour and as a tribute to his invaluable contributions that the Government of India designated July 1st as National Doctor’s Day in 1991.

Chartered Accountants Day 2023

  • National Chartered Accountants Day or CA Day is observed every year on July 1 to mark the establishment of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).
  • To commemorate the start of its 75th-year celebrations, ICAI unveiled a new logo with the tagline: ‘75 Years of Trust’.
  • As per its website, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India is a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament, viz.
  • The Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 (Act No.XXXVIII of 1949) for regulating the profession of Chartered Accountancy in the country. The Institute, functions under the administrative control of the ministry of corporate affairs.

History:

  • Before the formation of ICAI, the British Government kept accounts under the Indian Companies Act.
  • As per reports, later in 1930, it was decided that the Government of India should maintain a register called the Register of Accountants.
  • Under that system, any person whose name was entered in such register was called a Registered Accountant.
  • However, because of a lack of proper rules and regulations, it was felt that the accountancy profession was largely unregulated.
  • To solve this, in 1948, an expert committee was created to look into the matter. It was this expert committee that recommended that a separate autonomous association of accountants should be formed to regulate the profession.
  • In 1949, the Government of India accepted the recommendation and passed the Chartered Accountants Act.
  • On July 1, 1949, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) was established.

6th Goods and Services Tax (GST) day

  • The 6th Goods and Services Tax (GST) day was celebrated on July 1
  • The indirect tax regime was initiated in 2017 by the Centre.
  • According to the GST website, the decision to introduce the tax system was first laid down in the 2006 Budget speech by then Finance Minister P Chidambaram.
  • While 1 April 2010 was initially decided as the date for rolling out GST.

  • The Finance Ministry reported a collection of over ₹1.61 lakh crore through Goods & Services Tax (GST) in June.
  • This is 12 per cent higher than last June and around 3 per cent higher than May.
  • The statement added that gross GST collection crosses the ₹1.6 lakh crore mark for the fourth time, ₹1.4 lakh crore for 16 months in a row and ₹1.5 lakh for 7th time since GST’s inception.
  • Also, the average monthly gross GST collection for Q1 of FY24 is ₹1.69 lakh crore as compared to ₹1.10 lakh crore and ₹1.51 lakh crore of corresponding periods of FY22 and FY23 respectively
  • The gross GST revenue collected in June comprise ₹31,013 crore of CGST, ₹38,292 crore of SGST, ₹80,292 crore (including ₹ 39,035 crore collected on import of goods) of IGST and ₹11,900 crore (including ₹ 1,028 crore collected on import of goods) of cess.
  • The government has settled ₹36,224 crore to CGST and ₹30,269 crore to SGST from IGST. In June, the total revenue of the Centre and States after regular settlement is ₹67,237 crore for CGST and ₹68,561 crore for SGST.

  • India’s home-grown Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) completed seven years of service in the Indian Air Force (IAF).
  • Christened Tejas in 2003 by former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, the fighter aircraft is a multi-role platform that is steadily making a name as one of the world’s premier light fighters
  • It has been designed to undertake the Air Defence, Maritime Reconnaissance and Strike roles
  • Designed by the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • The first 20 Tejas Mark 1 fighters formed the IAF’s Number 45 Squadron — the “Flying Daggers.”
  • Over the years, 45 Squadron has flown Vampires, Gnats and then the MiG-21 BIS, before being equipped with the Tejas Mark 1.
  • All the aircraft flown by the Flying Daggers have been manufactured in India — first under licensed production and then, like the Tejas, designed and developed in India as well.
  • In May 2020, No 18 Squadron became the second IAF unit to operate the Tejas – still in its Mark 1 variant.
  • The IAF followed up those 40 fighters with another order for 83 more in a more advanced varient called the Mark 1A.
  • The new LCA variant will be capable of firing a range of weapons, missiles and cannon-fire from increased stand-off ranges. The Tejas LCA Mark 1A will see a substantial increase in the overall indigenous content of the aircraft.
  • Contracted deliveries of the aircraft are expected to commence in February 2024.
    Tejas made its debut abroad in March 2023 in Exercise Desert Flag in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
  • Meanwhile, the China/Pakistani JF-17 Thunder was being developed as a cheap, lightweight fighter for the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). More than 100 JF-17 Thunder jets have been inducted into service with the PAF since 2007.

  • These orders are in addition to the ₹5,900 crore orders that have already been received.
