- World Asteroid Day is an annual global event which is held on June 30, the anniversary of the Tunguska event in 1908 when a meteor air burst decimated about 2,000 square km (500,000 acres) of pine forest in central Siberia, Russia.
- The Tunguska asteroid event was the Earth’s largest asteroid impact in recorded history.
World Asteroid Day aims to raise public awareness about the asteroid impact hazard and to inform the public about the crisis communication actions to be taken at the global level in case of a credible near-Earth object (NOEs) catastrophic threat to our planet.
World Asteroid Day: History
- The Asteroid Day was cofounded in 2014 (the year after the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor air burst) by renowned cosmologist Stephen Hawking, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart, astrophysicist Brian May and some others.
- On 15 February 2013, an extraordinarily large fireball, travelling at a speed of 18.6 kms per second, entered the atmosphere and disintegrated in the skies over Chelyabinsk, Russia.
- According to NASA, the diameter of the asteroid was estimated at 18 meters and it’s mass at 11,000 tons.
- The total impact energy of the Chelyabinsk Fireball was 440 kilotons.
- In December 2016 the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution declaring 30 June as Word Asteroid Day.
International Day of Parliamentarism 2023
- June 30, marks the annual celebration of the International Day of Parliamentarism, commemorating the founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in 1889.
- This special day, established by a United Nations General Assembly Resolution in 2018, serves as an opportunity to reflect on the progress made by parliaments worldwide in achieving predetermined goals.
History:
- The inaugural UN International Day of Parliamentarism was celebrated in 1899 upon the establishment of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
- Subsequently, the day was officially designated in 2018 through a United Nations General Assembly Resolution.

- The World Bank has approved USD 1.5 billion in financing to accelerate India’s low-carbon energy infrastructure.
- The financing will help India promote low-carbon energy by scaling up renewable energy and developing green hydrogen, among others.
- World Bank reiterated that it will support India in developing green hydrogen. The low-carbon hydrogen energy is produced by electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy.
- India in early January approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to make the country a global hub for the production, utilization, and export of such technologies.
- The initial financial outlay for the mission is pegged at Rs 19,744 crore, which includes research and development activities. The green hydrogen mission will gradually lead to the decarbonization of the industrial, transport, and energy sectors.
- Under this mission, the government aims to raise annual green hydrogen production to 5 million tonnes, and renewable energy capacity addition of about 125 gigawatts.
- Notably, at the COP26 summit in Glasgow in 2021, India committed to an ambitious five-part “Panchamrit” pledge, including reaching 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity, to generate half of all energy requirements from renewables, to reduce emissions by 1 billion tons by 2030.
- India also aims to reduce the emissions intensity of GDP by 45 per cent.
- Finally, India commits to net-zero emissions by 2070.

- The CIMS will comprise of DW and Data Lake (DL) which would include, seamless data collection from regulated entities by creating system-to-system interface; system driven data validation and data review; flexible and scalable data repository and providing data dissemination platform. The CIMS would also include centralised analytics platform to facilitate creation of RBI Data Sciences Lab.
- CIMS will serve as a platform to carry out data mining, text mining, visual analytics and advanced statistical analysis connecting data from multiple domains, such as, financial, external, fiscal, corporate and real sectors as well as prices.

- The service will be operational with effect from July 01, 2023 as notified by the Department of Posts in the Gazette of India dated June 28, 2023.
- The ITPS is a competitive service for transmission and delivery of packets and has been designed to meet the cross-border shipping requirements of e-commerce exporter including MSMEs, small businesses, merchants, etc to promote exports of their products using local post offices.
- India Post already provides this service with 38 partner countries and Canada will be the 39th. The service was extended from 16 countries to 38 countries by adding 22 new partners including Britain, France, UAE, Egypt, Oman, etc. from June 01, 2023.
- The ITPS rates are kept very economical in comparison to International EMS (Speed Post) and other market products. The postage for first 50 gms would be Rs 400 and Rs 35 for every additional 50 gms.
- This will provide an affordable shipping solution upto 2 kg to exporters along with the pick-up and volume-based discount to contractual customers.

- The main focus of the National Workshop was to develop strategic plan and roadmap on integration of Ministry’s portal /dashboard to build data ecosystem, assess the schematic progress in alignment with LSDGs at Panchayat and institutional mechanisms for implementation of the Panchayat Development Index with active support of different Ministries / Departments, Panchayats and Knowledge Partners.
- Panchayat Development Index (PDI) Report has come with 144 local targets, 577 local indicators and 688 data points on 9 themes of LSDGs.
- NITI Aayog is the Nodal institution for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- PDI will act as a baseline for Panchayat for setting local targets & local action points with measurable indicators in preparation of thematic Gram Panchayat Development Plan.
- Panchayat Development Index (PDI) also help to reflect current status of the Panchayats to take concerted actions to achieve development goals through building institutional mechanisms.

- Shankush is a SSK Class of Submarine to be re-fitted at MDL, Mumbai. Delivery of Submarine post MRLC will be in 2026. After completion of MRLC, INS Shankush will be combat ready and will join the active fleet of the Indian Navy with upgraded combat capability.
- This project is an important step towards development of MDL as Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) Hub for supporting the industrial ecosystem of India. The project would involve more than 30 MSMEs and would lead to employment generation of 1200 Mandays per day for the project duration.
- The project will be a proud flag bearer of Atmanirbhar Bharat in consonance with the Make-in-India initiative of Government of India
