• The day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Indian hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand.

• He played a very significant role in helping India complete their first hat-trick of Olympic gold medals with victories at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Summer Olympics.

• The International Day against Nuclear Tests is an event that is held on August 29 each year.

International Day against Nuclear Tests 2021: History:

• A total of 2000 nuclear test explosions were conducted between 1945 and 1996.
• In 1996, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) was established by the United Nations General Assembly.
• 170 nations signed and ratified the treaty.
• 15 nations signed but did not ratify, while 11 nations did not sign.

• High jumper Nishad Kumar clinched a silver medal in the men’s high jump T47 event at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020.
• He made a jump of 2.06m and also went on to create an Asian record as the event turned out to be a good affair for the Indian para-athlete.
• USA’s Roderick Townsend and Dallas Wise won gold and bronze medals respectively.
