- India has ascended to the 7th position in this year’s Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI).
- India’s success is attributed to its robust performance in the greenhouse gas category, with a notable emphasis on the food sector, which holds significant weight in the CCPI
- Germanwatch, the NewClimate Institute and the Climate Action Network publish the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) index annually since 2005.
- It compares the climate protection performance of 63 countries and the EU which together account for over 90% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
- The climate protection performance is assessed in four categories: GHG Emissions, Renewable Energy, Energy Use and Climate Policy.
- Using standardised criteria, the CCPI looks at four categories, with 14 indicators: Greenhouse Gas Emissions (40% of the overall score), Renewable Energy (20%), Energy Use (20%), and Climate Policy (20%).
- It aims to enhance transparency in international climate politics and enables comparison of climate protection efforts and progress made by individual countries.

- India slipped to fourth position in the global ranking of Start up funding among the highest-funded geographies in 2023.

- This year India ranked fourth behind the US, the UK and China, receiving only $7 billion in total funding (till December 5), according to data compiled by global market intelligence platform Tracxn.
- In the third quarter (Q3) this year, India even slipped to fifth position among the highest-funded countries — behind the US, the UK, China and France.
- Q3 2023 raised a total of $1.5 billion, which is a 30 per cent drop from Q2 2023 and a 54 per cent drop as compared to Q3 2022.
- The last quarter (Q4) this year recorded the lowest funding of $957 million to date, marking it the lowest-funded quarter since Q3 2016.
- The decline is primarily due to the biggest drop in late-stage funding, by over 73 percent to $4.2 billion in 2023 from $15.6 billion in 2022.

- Rural Electrification Corporation Limited, a Maharatna CPSE under the Ministry of Power, has signed a 200 million Euro loan agreement with the German bank KfW.
- This marks REC’s sixth line of credit under the Indo-German Development Cooperation and demonstrates the corporation’s commitment to enhance the distribution infrastructure of DISCOMs in line with the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) of the Government of India.
- The government launched the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to help DISCOMs improve their operational efficiencies and financial sustainability by providing result-linked financial assistance to DISCOMs.
- REC is the nodal agency to implement the RDSS scheme.
Rural Electrification Corporation (REC):
- REC Limited, a Maharatna CPSE established in 1969, under Ministry of Power, provides long term loans and other finance products for Power-Infrastructure sector comprising of Generation, Transmission, Distribution, Renewable Energy and new technologies like Electric Vehicles, Battery Storage, Green Hydrogen etc.

- Steel Slag: Steel Slag is generated as a solid waste during steel production.
- Note: For every tonne of steel production around 180 – 200 kg of steel slag is generated in the integrated steel plants, which amounts to around 15 million tonnes steel slag generation annually.
