1. Darwin Day 2022:

  • February 12 is celebrated as Darwin Day to highlight his work and to celebrate science.
  • Charles Darwin changed the world through his theory of evolution.

History:

  • Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, in Shropshire.
  • He wrote ‘On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (in 1859), or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life’.
  • Darwin passed away in 1882.
  • On February 12, 1909, the 50th anniversary of the publication of ‘On the Origin of Species’ was celebrated at the American Museum of Natural History.
  • From 1997, Professor Massimo Pigliucci of the City College of New York began to celebrate February 12 as Darwin Day.
  • In 2015, US lawmaker Jim Hines introduced a resolution which led to February 12 being designated as Darwin Day.

2. International Epilepsy Day 2022:

  • February 14 is celebrated as the International Epilepsy Day.
  • Since this year, it falls along with Valentine’s Day.

3. SA’s Keegan Petersen, England skipper Heather Knight win ICC Player of the Month for Jan:

  • South African batter Keegan Petersen pipped under-19 star and compatriot Dewald Brevis and Bangladesh pacer Ebadot Hossain to claim the ICC men’s Player of the Month award for January following a phenomenal Test series against India.
  • For the women’s award, England skipper Heather Knight beat off competition from Sri Lanka captain ChamariAthapaththu and West Indies star DeandraDottin to clinch the honor.
  • Petersen played a pivotal role as South Africa came back from 0-1 down to win the three-match series 2-1 against India.
  • In the second Test, he scored 62 in the first innings, helping the Proteas gain a slender lead.
  • In their chase of 240, he played a crucial 28-run knock.
  • In the final Test, Petersen scored a fifty in each innings, including a superb 82 in a challenging fourth-innings chase of 212 that helped South Africa complete their comeback.
  • He ended the series as the highest run-scorer with 276 runs and was named the Player of the Series.
  • Knight captained England in the one-off Ashes Test against Australia in Canberra and finished as the highest run-getter.
  • In the first innings, England was in huge trouble as they kept losing wickets after Australia posted 337/9 declared.
  • However, they did not have an answer to Knight, who walked in to bat at No.3 in the third over and remained unbeaten on 168.
  • At one point, the visitors were 169/8 before Knight and Sophie Ecclestone added 100 runs for the ninth wicket and eventually finished with 297, just 40 runs behind Australia.
  • The knock helped England secure a thrilling draw that went to the very last ball of the match.
  • Her 168 not out was the second-highest score by a captain in the history of women’s Tests.

  • Top Indian business schools (B-schools) fell in their representation in the latest Financial Times (FT) Global MBA 2022 ranking even as Indian School of Business (ISB) led the pack from India this year.
  • While ISB fell by nine places to 32nd rank for its Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), IIM Bangalore fell by 18 places to rank at 53rd position down from last year’s 35th rank.
  • IIM Ahmedabad declined by 14 places to 62nd rank globally while IIM Calcutta was ranked 68th, down by 24 places from 44th position last year.
  • Apart from being top ranked in India & fourth in Asia in the FT Global MBA 2022 ranking, ISB was ranked number one globally in terms of salary percentage increase, underlining ISB students’ career path.
  • ISB’s efforts and initiatives in fostering gender diversity in all its programmes have started to shine as the 38 % of female students in the surveyed class is the highest number compared with other FT 2022 ranked schools in India.
  • ISB was also ranked at 11th place globally in the Poets & Quants (P&Q) composite ranking of the top international MBA programmes of 2021-2022.

5. Congestion levels drop in major cities including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi & Pune: 11th TomTom Traffic Index:

  • Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi have decreased on an average, as compared to pre-Covid times, according to a report by TomTom (TOM2).
  • A report detailing traffic trends seen in 404 cities in 58 countries, throughout 2021.
  • According to the report, Bengaluru slipped to 10th position from last year’s sixth, recording a 32 % average decrease in congestion compared to the pre-Covid period in 2019, with 49 % and 37 % average decrease in congestion during morning and evening rush hours, respectively.
  • The city’s congestion levels came down to 48 pts in 2021 from 71 pts in 2019, which means a 32 % decrease.
  • The peak traffic congestion also reducing by 44 pts in 2021. It saw its worst traffic day on October 9, 2021.
  • Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune, that saw an average decrease in congestion levels by 18 %, 14 %, and 29 %, respectively.
  • India fared better than the global average of 10 % decrease in congestion.
  • 4 cities from India featured in the TomTom Traffic Index’s global top 25 list – Mumbai (5th), Bengaluru (10th), and New Delhi (11th) and Pune (21st).

6. DMI Finance partners Google Pay to offer loans to digital wallet’s users:

  • DMI Finance, a credit platform, announced the launch of a personal loan product on Google Pay to offer credit to pre-qualified users of the digital wallet platform.
  • Eligible users are pre-qualified using criteria set by DMI Finance and the product offer will be made available to them via Google Pay.
  • The program aims to disburse up to ₹1 lakh per loan, with repayable period of maximum of 36 months.
  • This partnership is being launched across 15K+ pin codes.

7. Credit Fair partners Avanse Financial Services to offer education loans:

  • Credit Fair, a digital lending platform, has collaborated with Avanse Financial Services Ltd, an education-focused NBFC, to provide financing solutions for those interested in up-skilling and re-skilling themselves.
  • Aim to finance over 6,000 deserving students.

8. CCI approves acquisition of equity share capital of Sajjan India by Sona Company:

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approves acquisition of equity share capital of Sajjan India Limited (Target) by Sona Company Pte. Ltd. (Acquirer) under Section 31(1) of the Competition Act, 2002.
  • The proposed combination relates to investment in Target by way of acquisition of equity shares of Target and falls under Section 5(a) of the Competition Act, 2002.

Acquirer:

  • The Acquirer is an investment company, incorporated under the laws of Singapore.
  • The Acquirer does not have any physical presence in India.
  • The Acquirer does not have any portfolio companies or investments in India as on the date of the notice.

Target:

  • In India, Target’s activities are limited to:
    1. Contract manufacture and manufacture of chemical compounds used in agro-chemicals.
    2. Manufacture and trade of specialty chemicals.
    3. Manufacture and trade of chemical compounds used in dyes and pigments.

10. ICICI Bank’s Sandeep Bakhshi is Business Standard Banker of the Year:

  • Sandeep Bakhshi, MD & CEO of ICICI Bank, is the Business Standard Banker of the Year 2020-21 for turning around the private sector lender, during his tenure of the past 3 and a half years.
  • Bakhshi took charge in October 2018.

REMARKS:

  • The second-largest private sector lender in the country is well-capitalised.
  • The unanimous decision was taken by a high-profile jury of five, chaired by former Reserve Bank of India deputy governor S SMundra.
    • Other members were Keki Mistry, vice-chairman and CEO of Housing Development Finance Corporation, Anil Singhvi, chairman of Ican Investment Advisors, P S Jayakumar, former MD and CEO of Bank of Baroda who is also non-executive chairman of VBHC Value Homes and Northern ARC Capital and A Balasubramanian, MD and CEO of Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC.

11. Jio forays into satellite broadband market in partnership with SES:

  • Jio Platforms announced a joint venture with Luxembourg-based SES to provide satellite-based broadband services in India.
  • The 2 companies have formed a joint venture, Jio Space Technology Limited, in which Jio Platforms (JPL) and SES will own 51 % and 49 % equity stake respectively.
  • The joint venture will use multi-orbit space networks, a combination of geostationary (GEO) and medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellations, capable of delivering multi-gigabit links and capacity to enterprises, mobile backhaul, and retail customers across the length and breadth of India and neighboring regions.

12. Army to organize 3-day snow sports festival in J-K’s Bhaderwah to revive tourism:

  • Bhaderwah in Doda district of J & K is set to host a 3-day snow sports festival.
  • Army’s Rashtriya Rifles unit based at Bhaderwah is holding the three-day snow carnival from February 18.
    • In collaboration with district administration Doda and Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering in the picturesque valley, also known as mini-Kashmir for its resemblance with the ‘paradise on earth’.

13. BHEL bags order to supply compact heat exchanger sets for Tejas aircraft:

  • Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has bagged an order from HAL to supply compact heat exchanger sets for 83 LCA Tejas MK1A aircrafts, from HAL.

REMARKS:

  • The order envisages manufacturing, assembly, testing and supply of compact heat exchangers to be fitted in the light combat aircraft, Tejas, being manufactured by HAL.
  • The BHEL’s Heavy Plates and Vessels Plant (HPVP), Visakhapatnam is the sole supplier of heat exchangers for LCA Tejas to HAL since 1996.
  • The BHEL-HPVP and Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), Bangalore have jointly designed and developed 13 different types of compact heat exchangers for Environmental Control System (ECS) and Secondary Power System (SPS) of LCA MK-1 programme.
  • The BHEL is also currently working with DRDO for the development of Air Cycle Machine based Liquid Cooling System (LCS) for Aircraft POD application for LCA MK-2.
  • The BHEL-HPVP has dedicated, intricate manufacturing and inspection facilities for manufacturing of state-of-the-art Compact Heat Exchangers for different types of aircraft manufactured by HAL.
  • The same are progressively being augmented to meet International Aero Standards (AS9100) and BHEL is ready to meet the requirements of future programs of LCA, ALH, Sukhoi and AMCA.

14. Renault India partners CSC e-Governance Services to support PM Gramin Digital SakshartaAbhiyaan:

  • Automaker Renault India has partnered with CSC e-Governance Services (Common Service Centres) to support the Pradhan MantriGramin Digital SakshartaAbhiyaan (PMGDISHA).
  • By this MoU, The Company has handed over 5 cars to CSC e-Governance Services to help in its drive to upskill people in rural and semi-urban areas across India and help them develop vocational and professional skills.
  • The Renault cars will participate in distributing information on learning courses and support the CSC teams in conducting training to impart financial and digital skills in the rural areas.
  • Through these cars the VLEs (village-level entrepreneurs) will also spread awareness on the COVID-19 appropriate behaviour and protocols.

15. Gateway Terminals India to invest USD 115 mn for infrastructure development:

  • APM Terminals Mumbai also known as Gateway Terminals India (GTI) will invest USD 115 million (around Rs 870 crore) for infrastructure development.
  • A joint venture between APM Terminals and Container Corporation of India (Concor) operating at Nhava Sheva, GTI, includes a berth line of 2,336 feet and 128 acres of yard space.
