International Day of Older Persons: History

  • On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (by resolution 45/106) designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons.
  • This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna International Plan of Action on aging that was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on aging and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly.
  • In 1991, the General Assembly (by resolution 46/91) adopted the United Nations Principles for Older Persons.
  • In 2002, the Second World Assembly on aging adopted the Madrid International Plan of Action on aging, to respond to the opportunities and challenges of population aging in the 21st century and to promote the development of a society for all ages.

  • The theme for International Day for Older Persons this year is “Digital Equity for All Ages” affirms the need for access and meaningful participation in the digital world by older persons.

International Coffee Day:

  • The International Coffee Day is observed on 1 October annually to promote and celebrate the use of coffee.
  • The day is also used to create awareness about the history, benefits and popularity of the much-loved beverage. International Coffee Day aims at celebrating and highlighting the hard work of people associated with the coffee industry.

International Coffee Day: History

  • The International Coffee Organisation (ICO), established in London in 1963, first declared the occasion of International Coffee Day on 1 October, 2015.
  • However, the idea of an entire day dedicated to coffee goes long back.
  • The All Japan Coffee Association also promoted an event similar to International Coffee Day in 1983.
  • The International Coffee Association also marked International Coffee Day in China in 1997.
  • Countries such as Nepal and Taiwan also observed the day before 2015, with even the United States declaring a National Coffee Day in 2005.
  • The Southern Food and Beverage Museum first used the term ‘International Coffee Day’ at a press conference in 2009 to announce details about the first New Orleans Coffee Festival.
  • However, it was only after the ICO’s declaration in 2015 that the day began to be celebrated unanimously across the world.

International Coffee Day: Theme

  • This year, the theme of International Coffee Day is “Coffee’s Next Generation”.
  • The theme was chosen to provide people associated with the coffee industry with access to skill development, finance, knowledge and training and networking

World Vegetarian Day:

  • On October 1, every year, World Vegetarian Day is observed to promote a vegetarian diet.
  • World Vegetarian Day is celebrated to raise awareness about the health and humanitarian benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle.
  • The consumption of a vegetarian diet stops the increase of excess fat in the body, reduces the risk of heart ailments and its fibers and antioxidants help in fighting cancer.
  • People are of the view that a vegetarian diet is healthier and more eco-friendly as compared to a non-vegetarian diet.

World Vegetarian Day: History

  • The day was founded by the North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS) in 1977 as a vegetarian diet has health benefits and also saves animal lives.
  • The day was endorsed by the International Vegetarian Union in 1978.
  • October 1 also kick starts the ‘Month of Vegetarian Food’, an event initiated by the International Vegetarian Union.
  • The Union believes that October should be a month for vegetarian food to promote the health benefits of plant-based diets and products.

Vegetarian Awareness Month:

  • The Vegetarian Awareness Month has been launched by the World Vegetarian Day Facebook page in October to encourage people to give a vegan diet a try.

Ganemat Sekhon wins Silver in women’s Skeet at the Junior World Championships:

  • Rising Women’s Skeet talent Ganemat Sekhon has won a silver medal at International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Championship in Lima, Peru, late, competition day two of the event.
  • This was India’s fifth medal of the day.
  • The Chandigarh girl, who picked up her first senior ISSF World Cup stage medals in New Delhi earlier this year, went down in a Shoot-off eventually to American Alisha Fayth Layne, after both had tied on 46-hits after the 60-shot final. Sara Bongini of Italy won bronze.
  • It was a fruitful day for India with Manu Bhaker winning gold in the Women’s 10M Air Pistol leading an Indian 1-2 in the event with teammate Esha Singh winning silver.
  • Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil of Mumbai had begun the medal-rush with a silver in the Men’s 10M Air Rifle with Ramita following that up with a bronze in the Women’s 10M Air Rifle.
  • The second Indian in the Women’s Skeet final Raiza Dhillon could not get going and finished sixth hitting 14 of the first 20 targets.

Indian women win team gold in skeet, bronze for men at junior worlds:

  • Indian shooters claimed the gold medal in the women’s skeet team event and the bronze in the men’s team finals of the ISSF Junior World Championship.
  • The trio of Areeba Khan, Raiza Dhillon and Ganemat Sekhon finished at the top of the podium in the women’s event after shooting an aggregate score of 6.
  • In the gold medal round on Friday, the Indian women were pitted against the Italian team of Damiana Paolacci, Sara Bongini and Giada Longhi.
  • In the men’s section, the Indian team of Rajveer Gill, Ayush Rudraraju and Abhay Singh Sekhon won the bronze medal after prevailing over Turkey’s Ali Can Arabaci, Ahmet Baran and Muhammet Seyhun Kaya 6-0, the same’s scoreline as the women’s gold medal contest.
  • A day earlier, rising Indian woman skeet shooter Sekhon had won the silver medal in the tournament’s individual women’s skeet competition.
  • The Chandigarh shooter, who picked up her first senior ISSF World Cup stage medals in New Delhi earlier this year, went down in a shoot-off to American Alisha Fayth Layne, after both were tied on 46 hits in the 60-shot final.

  • Finance Ministry reported collection from Goods & Services Tax (GST) in the month of September at ₹ 1.17 lakh crore.
  • This is 23 per cent higher than collection from same month in last fiscal and 4 per cent higher than September of 2019.
  • During the month under review, revenues from import of goods was 30 per cent higher and the revenues from domestic transaction (including import of services) are 20 per cent higher than the revenues from these sources during the same month last year.
  • Centre had also released GST compensation of ₹. 22,000 crore to States to meet their GST revenue gap.
  • The gross GST revenue collected in the month of September is ₹ 1,17,010 crore of which CGST is ₹ 20,578 crore, SGST is ₹ 26,767 crore, IGST is ₹ 60,911 crore (including ₹ 29,555 crore collected on import of goods) and Cess is ₹ 8,754 crore (including ₹ 623 crore collected on import of goods).

  • India and the US have decided to set up a joint working group on industrial security to facilitate deeper collaboration on cutting-edge technologies.
  • The in-principle decision to set up the group was taken at the five-day Indo-US Industrial Security Agreement (ISA) summit that concluded, officials said.
  • The summit, held in Delhi, was aimed at developing a protocol for the exchange of classified information between the defence industries of both nations.
  • Leading US defence firms were pushing for a framework to ensure the safety and security of critical technologies and classified defence information when they are shared with the Indian private sector.
  • The ISA was signed in December 2019 to facilitate the exchange of classified information between the defence industries of both countries.
  • The summit, held to create a roadmap for the implementation of the ISA, was co-chaired by Designated Security Authorities (DSAs), Anurag Bajpai and David Paul Bagnati, from the Indian and US sides respectively.
  • The Indo-US defence ties have been on an upswing in the last few years.
  • In June 2016, the US had designated India a ”Major Defence Partner”.

India, Australia agree to conclude Free Trade Agreement by end of 2022:

  • India and Australia have agreed to conclude the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two nations by the end of 2022.
  • The announcement was made at the end of a meeting between Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and his Australian counterpart Don Tehan.
  • Hailing the development as a big day for the economic partnership between the two countries, Australian Trade Minister Tehan said, the two sides agreed on a roadmap towards finalizing the FTA.
  • Speaking to the media, Mr Tehan affirmed the 2022 deadline for the conclusion of the FTA.
  • Article 24 of the World Trade Organization (WTO) allows countries to form customs unions (CUs) or FTAs under two conditions.
  • First, members should eliminate, substantially all internal barriers to trade inside the union, second, external trade barriers should not be increased on average.

  • Under the new phase, it will be ensured that no untreated drain waste is discharged into any river of the country, Modi said after launching SBM-U 2.0 and AMRUT 2.0 at the Ambedkar International Centre here.
  • Now, the goal of SBM-Urban 2.0 is to make the cities completely free of garbage, he said and underlined the scope of the country’s target in the next phase of AMRUT as ‘improving sewage and septic management, making our cities water safe cities and ensuring that no sewage drains anywhere in our rivers’.
  • Modi noted that the young generation has taken the initiative to strengthen the cleanliness campaign.

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah has approved the release of the second instalment of the Central share of the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) amounting to Rs 7,274.40 crore in advance to 23 states, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) informed.
  • The state governments will now have an amount of Rs 23,186.40 crore in their SDRF including the state’s share, during the financial year 2021-22, in addition to the amount of opening balance available in their SDRF, to meet the expenses for granting ex-gratia to the next of kin of the deceased due to Covid-19 and for providing relief on other notified calamities.
  • The Central government on September 25 had issued an order revising the items and norms of assistance under the SDRF, making therein a provision for grant of ex-gratia payment to the next of kin of the deceased due to Covid-19.
  • This enabling provision in SDRF norms has been made so as to implement the guidelines issued by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on September 11 in compliance with the order passed by Supreme Court dated June 30.
  • This step of the Centre government will facilitate state governments to have enough funds in their SDRF.
