  • On that day, over a hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadero in Paris, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948, to honour the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger.
  • The gathering proclaimed that poverty is a violation of human rights and affirmed the need to come together to ensure that these rights are respected. Since then, people of all backgrounds, beliefs and social origins have gathered every year on October 17 to renew their commitment and show their solidarity with the poor.
  • Through resolution 47/196 adopted on 22 December 1992, the UN General Assembly declared 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

  • In another statement, the RBI said the penalty on Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited has been imposed for contravention of directions related to ”Managing Risks and Code of Conduct in Outsourcing of Financial Services by banks”, ”Recovery Agents engaged by Banks”, ”Customer Service in Banks”, and ”Loans and Advances – Statutory and Other Restrictions”.
  • In both cases, the RBI said the penalties are based on the deficiencies in regulatory compliance and is not intended to pronounce upon the validity of any transaction or agreement entered into by the banks with their customers.

  • In line with this futuristic plan, the Prime Minister inaugurated, dedicated to the nation and laid the foundation stone for projects worth more than Rs 23,000 crores that are aligned with the ‘AmritKaal Vision 2047’ for the Indian maritime blue economy.
  • The summit provides an excellent platform for attracting investment in the country’s maritime sector.
  • The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of Tuna-Tekra all-weather deep-draft terminal, to be built at a cost of more than Rs 4,500 crore at Deendayal Port Authority in Gujarat.
  • This greenfield terminal will be developed in public–private partnership (PPP) mode. The terminal, which is likely to emerge as an international trade hub, will handle next-gen vessels exceeding 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and will act as a gateway for Indian trade via the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).
  • The Prime Minister also dedicated more than 300 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth more than Rs 7.16 lakh crore for global and national partnerships in the maritime sector.

  • The Union government has proposed to sell up to 7% stake in Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) through an offer for sale (OFS).

Appointments

  • Dr Meenesh Shah, Chairman & Managing Director, National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has been elected to the Board of International Dairy Federation (IDF) during the General Assembly of IDF held on October 15.
  • The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the appointment of career diplomat ArindamBagchi as India’s next permanent representative to the United Nations and related global bodies in Geneva.
  • The Union government notified the much-delayed appointment of Delhi high court judge SiddharthMridul as the new full-time chief justice of the Manipur high court, more than three months after the collegium’s recommendation.

Awards 

  • Tamil Nadu was recognised for its excellence in investment promotion when it was given a United Nations Award at the biennial World Investment Forum in the United Arab Emirates.
  • President DroupadiMurmu will confer the 69th National Film Awards 2023 on 17 October at the VigyanBhawan in New Delhi.

National Affairs

  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the third edition of Global Maritime India Summit 2023 in Mumbai via video conferencing.
  • The Mahilathana (women police station) of Bhopal became the first women-centric police station across the entire country to be conferred with the ISO 9001:2015 certificate.
  • REC Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Informatics Centre Services Inc. (NICSI) under the National Informatics Centre (NIC), Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, for various Information & Communications Technology (ICT) and Digital Transformation Services.
  • The Ministry of Defence signed a contract for the construction of one Training Ship for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), Mumbai at a cost of Rs 2310 crore under the Buy (Indian- IDDM) category in New Delhi.
  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) and National Institute of Communication Finance (NICF).
