International Labour Day
- International Labour Day is celebrated every year on 1 May to commemorate the struggles and sacrifices of the workers’ and labours’ movement.
- It is also known as May Day.
History:
- The tradition of Labour Day dates back to 19th century America. On May 1st, 1886 workers in Chicago organized a strike to demand an eight-hour workday. However, workers across the US came together to demand their rights and to fight for better working conditions after a bomb exploded at a labour rally in Haymarket Square.
- In 1889, the International congress of socialist parties met in Paris and decided to celebrate Labour Day or Worker’s Day on May 1.
- The first labour day was celebrated in India on May 1, 1923, in Chennai. The first May Day celebrations were organized by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan.
- Labour Day is celebrated by many different names in the various Indian states with most popular name being May Day. Labour Day is known as Kamgar Din in Hindi, KarmikaraDinacharane in Kannada, KarmikaDinotsavam in Telugu, Kamgar Divas in Marathi, UzhaipalarDhinam in Tamil, ThozhilaaliDinam in Malayalam, and ShromikDibosh in Bengali.

- The bank has been bought and sold several times over the years, with Merrill Lynch & Co. paying $1.8 billion to acquire First Republic in 2007.

- Eleven US banks had tried to keep First Republic afloat by pledging $30 billion of fresh deposits on March 16, with JPMorgan, Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co. pitching in $5 billion each. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley and other banks offered smaller amounts as part of a plan devised along with US regulators.

- India and Russia have agreed to explore the possibility of accepting each other’s payment cards, RuPay (India) and Mir (Russia), for hassle-free payments between the two countries.
- During the latest meeting of the Internal Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC), which was jointly chaired by External Affairs Minister of India S Jaishankar and Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, the decision was made.
- Mutual acceptance of RuPay and Mir cards will facilitate transactions in Indian rupees and Russian rubles, making it easier for citizens of both countries to carry out cross-border payments.
- Both countries also agreed to explore the adoption of the Russian financial messaging system, the Services Bureau of Financial Messaging System of the Bank of Russia, for cross-border payments.
- In addition, the meeting also explored the possibility of interaction between India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Russia’s Faster Payments System (FPS).
- To begin with, the State Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, Indian Bank and ICICI Bank will facilitate both inward and outward remittances while Axis Bank and DBS India will facilitate inward remittances.
- Since its inception in 2008, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has established a resilient payment and settlement infrastructure in India, enabling transactions through a range of retail payment products like RuPay card, Immediate Payment Service (IMPS), UPI, Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM), BHIM Aadhaar, National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC Fastag), and Bharat BillPay.

8. What was the percentage growth in GST revenue collection in April 2023 compared March 2023?

- The gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue collection grew by 12 per cent in April to Rs 1.87 lakh crore. It is the highest monthly mop-up since the rollout of the indirect tax regime in July 2017.
- According to a statement by the Finance Ministry, the division of Rs 1,87,035 crores is as follows: CGST is Rs 38,440 crore, SGST is Rs 47,412 crore, IGST is Rs 89,158 crore (including Rs 34,972 crore collected on import of goods) and cess is Rs 12,025 crore.
- The previous high collection of ₹1.68 lakh crore was in April last year.
- The total gross collection for the 2022-23 fiscal stood at ₹18.10 lakh crore, 22 per cent higher than the previous year.
- Meanwhile, the GST collection for March 2023 stood at Rs 1.60 lakh crores.

- Transactions on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform hit a new high of 890 crore in April 2023.
- The value of these transactions was also at a new record at Rs 14.07 lakh crore.
- Meanwhile, FASTag transactions stood at 30.5 crore for Rs 5,149 crore.
- According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India, IMPS transactions for April were down at 49.6 crore last month from 49.7 crore in March 2023.
- The value of transactions also dipped to Rs 5.21 lakh crore from Rs 5.46 lakh crore.
Year on year, transactions were up 5% in number and and 17% in value. - UPI transactions during April 2023 saw a 59% increase from April 2022.
- The value of these transactions was 49% higher than a year ago.
- Sequentially, the number of UPI transactions was 2.3% higher than 870 crore in March 2023, the busiest month for transactions and 18% higher than in February.
- In value terms, March 2023 was only marginally lower at Rs 14.05 lakh crore.

- The apps blocked by the government include Crypviser, Enigma, Safeswiss, Wickrme, Mediafire, Briar, BChat, Nandbox, Conion, IMO, Element, Second line, Zangi, Threema among others.
- These mobile applications were used by terrorists in Kashmir to communicate with their supporters and on-ground workers (OGW).
- Previously, the Indian government banned numerous Chinese apps, accusing them of being “prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the state and public order.”
- In total, around 250 Chinese apps have been banned over the past few years. Since June 2020, more than 200 Chinese apps, including popular ones such as TikTok, Shareit, WeChat, Helo, Likee, UC News, Bigo Live, UC Browser, Xender, Camscanner, as well as popular mobile games such as PUBG Mobile and Garena Free Fire, have been banned.

- The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has decided to extend the deadline for the Smart Cities Mission till June 2024, following requests from some cities that sought more time to complete their ongoing projects.
- The existing deadline of the Mission was June 2023.
- The Narendra Modi government launched its flagship Smart Cities Mission (SCM) on June 25, 2015 and 100 cities were selected for redevelopment through two-stage competition from January 2016 to June 2018.
- According to the ministry, the one-year extension will ensure 100 per cent works under the SCM get completed in all 100 smart cities.
- According to the officials, out of 100 cities, around 50 have completed close to 75 per cent of their projects and are on track to complete remaining works by June 2023.
- Over 66 per cent projects in small cities, and over 80 per cent projects in the metros have been completed.
- As many as 232 public-private partnership projects worth Rs 15,006 crore have been taken up across 53 smart cities both small and big.
- The government has released around Rs 38,000 crore to 100 cities. Combining this with state and urban local bodies releases, the cumulative amount of funds released to cities stands at Rs 71,000 crore.
- An amount of Rs 8,000 crore, budgeted in FY 2023-24 in this mission.

- The C20 India 2023 is one of the official Engagement Groups of the G20 that provides a platform for Civil Society Organizations (CSO) around the world to voice their aspirations to the world leaders at the G20’s 2023 Summit in India.
- The C20 India 2023 Working Group on Sustainable and Resilient Communities – Climate, Environment and Net Zero Targets is one of the 14 Working Groups that have been formed under C20 India 2023.
- The C20 conclave is a major event under India’s G20 Presidency that aims to bring out extensive dialogue and engagement with Civil Society Organizations, policymakers, representatives from government and non-governmental agencies, and academicians from around the world to understand existing global policies related to the Sustainability and Resilient Communities and to further identify gaps and come up with innovative solutions which will then be presented to the G20 nations at the summit in September 2023.
