  • The World Bank will provide USD 200 million (about Rs 1,600 crore loan) to finance the Himachal Power Sector Development Program to bring improvements in renewable energy integration in the state.
  • With the addition of state equity, the total outlay for the programme would be Rs 2,000 crore and the World Bank funding is expected to be available by August 2023 for a duration of five years up to 2028.
  • The Programme also aimed at installing new capacities of about 200 MW in solar generation through Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) and Himachal Pradesh Energy Development Agency (HIMURJA).
  • It will also focus on strengthening the power network within the state and transmission by HPPTCL (Himachal Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Ltd) and distribution by HPSEBL (Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board) in 13 towns for optimal trading to meet the demand.
  • The programme would strengthen the environmental and social systems applicable to the state’s power sector for better monitoring and evaluation of these aspects.
  • It will help the state to develop a uniform environment and social policy and procedures for the power sector utilities and provide benchmarks for the sustainable development of renewable energy.

  • ‘AmrohaDholak’, ‘MahobaGauraPattharHastashlip’, ‘MainpuriTarkashi’, ‘Sambhal Horn Craft’, ‘Baghpat Home Furnishings’, ‘Barabanki Handloom Product’ and ‘Kalpi Handmade Paper’ are the products that been given the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • The AmrohaDholak is a musical instrument made of natural wood. Mango, jackfruit and teakwood is preferred for making the dholak’s. Wood from mango and sheesham trees are used to carve the multiple sized and shaped hollow blocks, which are later fitted with animal skin, mostly goatskin, to create the instrument.   • AmrohaDholak was filed by Artisans Welfare Society, Mohalla – Danishmandan, Amroha, Uttar Pradesh.
  • The application for Baghpat Home Furnishings was filed by the Directorate of Handloom and Textile Industries, Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Master Weavers Cooperative Society Limited. Baghpat and Meerut are famous for their exclusive handloom home furnishing product and running fabrics in cotton yarn since generations, and only cotton yarn are used in the handloom weaving process.
  • The Barabanki Handloom Product has also being bestowed with a GI tag. The Directorate of Handloom and Textile Industries, Government of Uttar Pradesh, along with BhartiyaBunkarSahkariSamiti Limited had filed the application for this product.
  • For Kalpi Handmade Paper, the application was filed by HashtNirmitKagajSamiti, Industrial Estate, Kalpi, Uttar Pradesh. Kalpi has historically been a centre of handmade paper manufacturing. Historical details available in the filing show that Munnalal ‘Khaddari’, a Gandhian, formally introduced the craft here in the 1940s, though many locals say that Kalpi’s association with paper-making dates further back into history.
  • The MahobaGauraPattharHastashlip is a stone craft. It is a very unique and soft stone with scientific name, the ‘Pyro Flight Stone’. Gaura stone craft is made of radiant white-coloured stone that is predominantly found in this region. It is cut into several pieces, which are then used for making various craft items.
  • MainpuriTarkash and Sambhal Horn Craft are the other two products that clinched the GI tag.
  • Tarkashi, a popular art form from Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, is primarily brass wire inlay work on wood. It was mainly used for khadaous (wooden sandals), a necessity for every household, since leather was considered unclean. And for the Sambhal Horn Craft, the raw material is procured from dead animals. They are completely hand-made.

  • Mr. Stalin also virtually inaugurated three PeriyarNinaivuSamathuvapurams in Tiruvallur, Cuddalore and Tiruchi districts that have been renovated at a total cost of ₹3.12 crore.
  • He also virtually inaugurated new buildings for the Rural Development Department constructed at a total cost of ₹34.76 crore
  • Mr. Stalin also inaugurated 26 District ‘PoomalaiVanigaValagam’ (commercial complexes) constructed by the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women at a total cost of ₹5.16 crore.

  • Under SS 2023, around 3,000 assessors will take the field for assessment from 1 July, 2023.
  • The assessors will study performances of 4500+ cities across 46 indicators and it is expected to be completed within a month. Rolled out on 24 May, 2022,
  • SwachhSurvekshan 2023 champions Waste to Wealth and is curated towards processing and scientific management of waste.
  • Originally designed as a competitive monitoring tool, SwachhSurvekshan was introduced under the aegis of MoHUA in 2016, with an objective to sanitation, helping cities to achieve the goal of sustainable sanitation and waste management in a fast-track competitive manner.
  • A new third quarter for SwachhSurvekshan 2023 was introduced this year and the States/ cities geared up for the survey enhancing their activities and level of preparedness.
  • the fourth quarter is being launched from 1 July, 2023.
  • SwachhSurvekshan 2023 was rolled out on 24 May, 2022, with telephonic feedback from citizens on various parameters of city cleanliness. 8 years have reflected that the citizens’ perception and engagement is strong vis-à-vis clean neighbourhoods, clean drains, clean market areas, etc.
  • To bring in efficiency and transparency in sanitation survey, citizens’ feedback is collected via various channels – Vote For My City App, Vote For My City Portal, MyGov App, Swachhata App and QR Codes.

PM-PRANAM scheme gets CCEA approval to boost alternative fertilisers

  • The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved PM-PRANAM, which is aimed at incentivising states to use alternative, non-chemical fertilisers, and also decided to continue the current urea subsidy for three years starting FY23, with an outlay of Rs 3.68 trillion.
  • The CCEA also took two more decisions for the fertiliser sector — a Rs 1,451 crore subsidy to promote organic manure, and a decision to debut sulphur-coated urea (Urea Gold) to address sulphur deficiency in the soil and reduce urea use.
  • The subsidy on organic manure will take the total cost of package to over Rs 3.70 trillion.
  • PRANAM stands for Prime Minister’s Programme for Restoration, Awareness, Generation, Nourishment and Amelioration of Mother Earth).
  • PM-PRANAM was first announced in the 2023-24 Budget by the Union government.
  • On urea, continuation of the subsidy till 2025 will ensure constant availability of fertiliser to the farmers at the same price of Rs 242 per 45 kg bag, excluding taxes and neem-coating charges
  • The total urea subsidy of Rs 3.68 trillion for three years does not include Rs 38,000 crore approved for phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilisers in kharif of 2023-24.

Nano Urea eco-system strengthened

  • By 2025-26, eight Nano urea plants with production capacity of 44 Crore bottles equaling to 195 LMT of conventional urea will be commissioned.
  • Nano fertilizer releases nutrients in a controlled manner contributing to higher nutrient use efficiency and while costing less to the farmers. Application of Nano Urea has demonstrated increase in crop yield.

Market Development Assistance (MDA)

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi approved Rs. 1451.84 crore have been approved for for promoting Organic Fertilizers from Gobardhan Plants.
  • Under the scheme, a subsidy of Rs 1,500 per tonne will be provided to support the marketing of organic fertilisers — fermented organic manures (FOM)/ liquid FOM/ phosphate-rich organic manures (PROM) produced as by-products from biogas plants/ compressed biogas (CBG) plants set up under umbrella GOBARdhan (Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan) initiative.

Introduction of Sulphur coated Urea (Urea Gold); to address sulphur deficiency of soil and save input costs for the farmers

  • Another initiative of the package is that the Sulphur coated Urea (Urea Gold) is being introduced in the country for the first time.
  • It is more economical and efficient than the currently used Neem coated urea.
  • It will also save input costs for the farmers and also raise incomes for farmers with enhanced production & productivity.

Pradhan MantriKisanSamruddhiKendras (PMKSKs) touches one lakh

  • About one lakh Pradhan MantriKisanSamruddhiKendras (PMKSKs) have already come up in the country.
  • For the convenience of farmers, the farm inputs are being provided as a one stop solution for all needs of farmers.

Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane

  • Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane for sugar season 2023-24 (October – September) at Rs 315 per quintal for a basic recovery rate of 10.25 percent.
  • It has also been approved to provide a premium of Rs 3.07 per quintal for each 0.1 percent increase in recovery over and above 10.25 percent, and reduction in FRP by Rs 3.07 per quintal for every 0.1 percent decrease in recovery.
  • FRP or the fair and remunerative price is the minimum price at which sugarcane is bought from farmers.
  • The FRP is recommended by the Commission of Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) to the government.

National Affairs

  • The Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai has given tags to seven different products from Uttar Pradesh.
  • The Gujarat government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the US-based computer storage chip maker Micron in a bid to set up a USD 2.75 billion semiconductor assembly and test facility at Sanand in Ahmedabad district.
  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy launched the ‘JaganannaAmmaVodi’ scheme for the fourth year.
  • In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, Chief Minister MK Stalin launched a new web portal – http://tnagriculture.in/mannvalam – to encourage farmers to use appropriate fertiliser for their land, knowing the type and quality of the soil.
  • Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) launched the Field Assessment for SwachhSurvekshan (SS) 2023.
  • The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved PM-PRANAM, which is aimed at incentivising states to use alternative, non-chemical fertilisers.
