• In a strategic move, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given the green light to the amalgamation of Akola Merchant Co-operative Bank Ltd, located in Akola, Maharashtra, with The Jalgaon Peoples Co-operative Bank Ltd, situated in Jalgaon, Maharashtra.
• This merger has been sanctioned by the RBI, exercising its powers as per Sub-Section (4) of Section 44A in conjunction with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
• The approved scheme of amalgamation is set to take effect from August 28, 2023
  Following this date, the branches of Akola Merchant Co-operative Bank will continue operations as branches of The Jalgaon Peoples Co-operative Bank.
• Earlier this week, the central bank had also approved the amalgamation of Twin Cities Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd with Kranti Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd.
• On March 23, 2021, the central bank issued a master direction for the amalgamation of urban cooperative banks.
• First, when the net worth of the amalgamated bank (the UCB, which proposes to transfer its business to another UCB) is positive and the amalgamating bank (the UCB, which is to acquire the business of the amalgamated bank) assures to protect the entire deposits of all depositors of the amalgamated bank.

• The south pole of the Moon is of particular interest, as its surface, marked by craters, trenches and pockets of ancient ice, hasn’t been visited until now.
• India’s achievement comes just days after Russia’s Luna-25 spacecraft spun out of control and crashed into the Moon.
• Chandrayaan-3,India’s third lunar mission, will work to build on the success of the earlier Moon missions and Isro officials say it will help make some “very substantial” scientific discovery.
• It comes 15 years after Chandrayaan-1, the country’s first Moon mission in 2008, which discovered the presence of water molecules on the parched lunar surface and established that the Moon has an atmosphere during daytime.
• And despite failing the soft landing, Chandrayaan-2 was not a complete write-off – its orbiter continues to circle the Moon even today and will help the Vikram lander send images and data to Earth for analysis.
• The feat makes India the fourth country to land on the moon, and the first to land on one of the moon’s lunar poles.
• Earlier this year, the first attempted landing by Japanese company Ispace also crashed in the final moments.
• In 2020, ISRO estimated the Chandrayaan-3 mission would cost about $75 million.
• The mission was originally slated for 2021, but was delayed by the Covid pandemic.

• It was the 14th launch of the so-called V2 mini satellites which are larger and have four times the bandwidth of the previous models.
• The full-sized V2 Starlink satellites are due to be launched by SpaceX’s fully-reusable Starship vehicle, but the delayed debut of Starship led SpaceX to create a condensed version of the satellites so they could be launched on Falcon 9.

• It also entails an accident insurance coverage of Rs 2 lakhs.
• As of August 9, 23 number of the total PMJDY accounts were 50.09 crore; of those 55.6 per cent (27.82 crore) Jan Dhan account holders were women and 66.7 per cent (33.45 crore) Jan Dhan accounts were in rural and semi-urban areas.
• Total deposit balances under PMJDY accounts stand at Rs 203,505 crore, with an average deposit per account at Rs 4,063.
• PMJDY has been the foundation stone for people-centric economic initiatives.
• Whether it is direct benefit transfers, COVID-19 financial assistance, PM-Kisan, increased wages under MGNREGA, or life and health insurance cover, the first step of all these initiatives is to provide every adult with a bank account, which PMJDY has nearly completed.
• The government said one in two accounts opened between March 2014 to March 2020 was a PMJDY account.
• Within 10 days of the nationwide lockdown, more than 20 crore women PMJDY accounts were credited with the financial assistance of Rs 500 per month for three months through direct benefit transfer.
