- CalyampudiRadhakrishna Rao, the renowned mathematician and statistician, passed away
- Popularly known as CR Rao, the man had many titles, be it ‘Legendary Mathematician’, ‘Statistics Professor’ and ‘Statistician’.
- At the beginning of 2023, he was awarded the International Prize in Statistics, equivalent to the Nobel Prize in this field.
- He was also awarded the Padmabhushan in 1968, Padma Vibhushan in 2001 and SS Bhatnagar Award.
- He also received the Wilks Medal of the American Statistical Association in 1979 and the US National Medal of Science in 2002.
- Dr. Rao was also a member of several government committees for the development of national statistical systems, statistical education and research in India.

- The RBI further said the branch of Twin Cities Co-operative Urban Bank will function as a branch of Kranti Co-operative Urban Bank with effect from August 23, 2023.
- On March 23, 2021, the central bank issued master direction for amalgamation Urban Cooperative Banks.
- As per the directions, the RBI may consider proposals for merger and amalgamation under three circumstances, including when the net worth of the amalgamated bank (the UCB which proposes to transfer its business to another UCB) is positive and the amalgamating bank (the UCB which is to acquire the business of the amalgamated bank) assures to protect entire deposits of all depositors of the amalgamated bank.

- Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL) and Inland Waterways Authority of India signed a pact to use National Waterways-2 (Brahmaputra) and Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR) for export of petroleum products to Bangladesh and other southeast Asian countries
Under the MoU, NRL will export approximately 10,000 metric tons of petroleum and petrochemical products per month from the IWAI Jogighopa Multi Modal terminal. - Additionally, NRL will establish a POL Oil Terminal at the Jogighopa Logistics Park with rail connectivity, further strengthening the region’s transportation infrastructure
- The primary goal of this MoU is to fulfill the ‘Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for Northeast’ by harnessing inland waterways transportation via NW2 and IBPR, ushering in a new era of export-import trade for the Northeastern region
- The MoU was signed by NRL’s chief general manager (Marketing) Subrata Das and IWAI director A Selva Kumar in the presence of Union Shipping Minister SarbanandaSonowal and Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas RameshwarTeli.
- NRL is currently executing the Numaligarh Refinery Expansion Project (NREP), a refinery expansion cum modernisation project with a capex of ₹28,026 crore.
- This project will significantly contribute to the region’s growth, and NRL has already transported five over dimension consignments/overweight consignments (ODC/OWC) via the IBPR and NW2.
- The weight of cargo transported so far amounts to approximately 4,500 metric tonne, demonstrating the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of waterway transport.

- The DAC has also accorded AoN for procurement of Ground-Based Autonomous System for mechanised infantry and armoured regiments which will enable various operations like unmanned surveillance, logistic delivery of ammunition, fuel & spares and casualty evacuation in the battle field.
- Proposals for procurement of 7.62×51 mm Light Machine Gun (LMG) and Bridge Laying Tank (BLT) have also been given go ahead by the DAC. While induction of LMG will enhance fighting capabilities of infantry forces, the induction of BLT will result in faster movement of Mechanised Forces.

- Taking one more step towards clean and green energy, NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydropower company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO) Limited (an undertaking of the Government of Andhra Pradesh) for implementation of Pumped Hydro Storage Projects and Renewable Energy Projects in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
- In the first phase, the MoU envisages implementation of two identified Pumped Hydro Storage Projects of total capacity 1,950 MW.
- These projects are Kamlapadu (950 MW) and Yaganti (1,000 MW).
- The implementation of these projects is expected to create significant employment opportunities and boost the local economy in the region. The projects will be implemented under Joint Venture mode.
- The MoU was signed in Tadepalli, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh on 23rd August, 2023, in the presence of Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Shri Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
- The agreement was signed by Director (Finance), NHPC, Shri R.P. Goyal and Managing Director, APGENCO, Shri K. V. N. ChakradharBabu, in the presence of other officers of both organizations.

- Shri Shantanu Thakur, Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and other dignitaries will also be present during the signing.
- The project involves construction of a mega-container terminal at Tuna-Tekra near Kandla, at a cost of Rs 4,243.64 crore through Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
- Once complete, the terminal will have annual capacity to handle 2.19 million container units (TEUs) with capability to handle next-generation vessels carrying more than 18,000 TEUs.
- The 30-year PPP project agreement with an SPV of Hindustan Infralog Private Limited (a JV of DP World and National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF)), is on Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis, extendable upto 50 years.
- The container terminal will be fully compliant with the green port guidelines ensuring sustainability in port operations by adopting best practices of port environment management contributing towards the long-term sustainability goals set out by the Government of India
- The project is part of the National Infrastructure Pipeline and will complement initiatives of the Government of India envisioned by the Prime Minister, such as the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan and National Logistics Policy.
