  • The Union Cabinet approved National Medical Devices Policy 2023 to promote domestic manufacturing and help the sunrise sector grow from the present USD 11 billion to USD 50 billion in the next five years and reduce import dependence.
  • The policy focuses on six strategies to tap the potential of the sector with the ‘implementation of action plan’.
  • The six strategies planned under the policy are Regulatory Streamlining; Enabling Infrastructure; Facilitating R&D and Innovation; Attracting Investments in the Sector; Human Resources Development; and Brand Positioning and Awareness Creation.
  • The policy aims to place the medical devices sector on an accelerated path of growth with a patient-centric approach to meet the evolving healthcare needs of patients.
  • Last year, the government had floated an approach paper on the draft national medical devices policy 2022 for consultation. The market size of the medical devices sector in India is estimated to be USD 11 billion (about Rs 90,000 crore) in 2020 and its share in the global medical device market is projected to be 1.5 per cent.
  • The government has already initiated implementation of the PLI Scheme for medical devices and extended support for setting up of 4 medical device parks in Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
  • Under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for medical devices, till now, a total of 26 projects have been approved with a committed investment of Rs 1,206 crore and out of this, so far, an investment of Rs 714 crore has been achieved.
  • The Union Cabinet has also approved the establishment of 157 new nursing colleges at a cost of Rs 1,570 crore in co-location with existing medical colleges.
  • Uttar Pradesh will see the maximum number of colleges (27) being set up, while Rajasthan will have 23 and Madhya Pradesh, 14.

  • A consortium of Russia’s CJSC Transmashholding and Rail Vikas Nigam (TMH-RVNL) had in March emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) for the Rs 58,000-crore contract to manufacture and maintain 200 trainsets at Rs 120 crore per unit.

  • Union home and cooperation minister Amit Shah launched the world’s first liquid Nano DAP – a novel nano fertiliser containing nitrogen and phosphorus – whose use will not only reduce India’s fertiliser import dependence but also take the country towards sustainable farming and increase the farmers’ income by bringing down input cost.
  • Nano DAP is the second such variant of fertiliser. Nano Urea was the first one in this series, launched in February, 2021.
  • According to the IFFCO due to the use of Nano DAP, farmers can reduce the crop-wise expenditure by 6 to 20 per cent.
  • A bottle of 500 ml Nano DAP cost Rs 600 which can replace a 50 kg bag of traditional DAP which costs around Rs 1350. Farmers must mix 2-4 ml of Nano DAP liquid in 1 litre of clean water and spray on crop leaves.
  • Earlier Government of India notified Nano DAP on March 2, 2023.
  • IFFCO has targeted the production of 18 crore bottles of Nano DAP by the year 2025-26 and 90 LMT of conventional DAP will be reduced.
  • Nano DAP contains 8 per cent of nitrogen and 16 per cent of phosphorus.
  • The manufacturing units of Nano DAP have been established in Kalol, Gujarat and Paradeep, Odisha by IFFCO which has patents of both the Nano variant of liquid fertilisers.
  • The Centre is implementing a Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) policy with effect from April 2010 for Phosphatic and Potassic (P&K) fertilisers. Under the policy, a fixed amount of subsidy is provided on P&K fertilisers depending on their nutrient content. The MRP of P&K fertilisers is fixed by manufacturers.
