  • Parkash Singh Badal was born on December 8, 1927, in Punjab’s AbulKhurana near Malout.
  • In 1957, Parkash Singh Badal was elected as an MLA for the first time from the Malout seat which he contested on Congress party ticket.
  • Parkash Singh Badal has served as the chief minister of Punjab for five terms – first term from March 27, 1970 to June 14, 1971, second term from June 20, 1977 to February 17, 1980, third term from February 12, 1997 to February 26, 2002, fourth and fifth consecutive terms from March 2, 2007 to March 16, 2017.

  • The central bank said that it has cancelled the banking licence dated January 3, 1987, granted to The Adoor Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd, Adoor, Kerala to carry on banking business in India under Section 22 read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, with effect from the close of business on April 24, 2023.
  • This makes it obligatory on the part of The Adoor Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd, Adoor, to stop conducting the business of ‘banking’ within the meaning of section 5(b) of the Act ibid, including acceptance of deposits from non-members with immediate effect.
  • RBI cancelled the licence of eight lenders in FY 2023. In 2022, the central bank cancelled the licence of 12 banks. 2021, three banks were ripped off the licence. In 2020, two cooperative banks were told to shut shop.

  • Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone and inaugurate various projects worth more than Rs 3,200 crore. Apart from Kochi Water Metro, rail electrification of the Dindigul-Palani-Palakkad section will also be dedicated by PM Modi.
  • He inaugurated the railway electrification of the Dindigul-Palani-Palakkad section. He laid the foundation stone for various rail projects including the redevelopment of Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and VarkalaSivagiri railway stations.
  • The redevelopment of the three railway stations will make Kerala a multimodal transport hub.

India’s first water metro

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India’s first water metro that connects 10 islands around Kochi through battery-operated electric hybrid boats for seamless connectivity with the city
  • The metro project will start with eight electric hybrid boats developed under Cochin Shipyard Limited. The Kerala government and the German company KfW are funding this dream project. It consists of 38 terminals and 78 electric boats.
  • The KWM service will launch in the first phase from the High Court-Vypin and Vyttila-Kakkanad terminals. The tickets for the boat trip start at Rs 20. For frequent travellers, there are weekly and monthly passes available.

Digital Science Park

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for India’s first third generation Digital Science Park being developed by the Kerala government.
  • Amount: Rs 1500 crore project coming up at Technopark Phase IV-Technocity.
  • The park is coming up at a 13.93 acre site as part of the Technopark Phase IV-Technocity and is located close to the Kerala University of Digital Sciences Innovation and Technology.
  • The Kerala government has already allocated Rs 200 crore for the initial work on the park.
