Solution : The error is in part A of the sentence.  “The number of ”  is always followed by a “Plural noun”   ,but a “Singular verb”. So “are” should be replaced by “is”

2. This is (A) / the same book (B) / which you (C) / were reading (D)  / No error (E)

Solution : The error is in part of C of the sentence. “which” should be replaced by “that”

RULE : “The same” + that (as relative pronoun).It cannot be followed by “Which” or “Who”.
