Error Spotting – Answers

  1. The number of accidents are (A) / increasing day by day (B) / on the Delhi metro route (C) / No Error (D)

Solution : The error is in part A of the sentence.  “The number of ”  is always followed by a “Plural noun”   ,but a “Singular verb”. So “are” should be replaced by “is

  1. This is (A) / the same book (B) / which you (C) / were reading (D)  / No error (E)

Solution : The error is in part of C of the sentence. “which” should be replaced by “that

RULE : “The same” + that (as relative pronoun).It cannot be followed by “Which” or “Who”.

Solution: The error is in part B of the sentence. “A number of , a large number of, large number of ” is always followed by a plural noun as well as a plural verb. So in Part B, the verb should be “are” instead of “is”

Solution: The error is in part C of the sentence. “from” should be replaced by the word  “than” (other…than is the correct form)

With words like “superior, inferior, senior, junior, prior, anterior, posterior and prefer”  “to” is used.

RULE : When two actions occurred in past, the action which happened earlier is denoted by using   past perfect tense  and the action which happened later is denoted by using simple past tense

Solution: The error is in part A of the sentence.  “with” should be replaced by “from

RULE :separation…..from”   is the correct form

Solution: The error is in part D of the sentence. Replace “had reached” with “reached
