2. National Equestrian Championship to be held in Mumbai from Jan 29:

  • National Equestrian Championship of show jumping for 2021-22 will take place from January 29 to February 5 at the Amateur Riders Club (ARC) under the aegis of the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI), at Mahalakshmi race course, Mumbai.
  • Athletes aged 14 and above will be eligible for participation. Organized by the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI), athletes from Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata along with host city Mumbai, will be taking part in the show jumping event which will have two rounds each.
  • It’s an annual event bringing in talented and potential showjumpers to participate and showcase their skills.
  • There are five categories in the championship: Novice, Grade III/ Medium, Grade II/ Intermediate, Grade I/ Advance, and Grand Prix.

3. Kristina Mladenovic, Ivan Dodig win Australian Open mixed doubles title:

  • Kristina Mladenovic of France and Ivan Dodig of Croatia have defeated Australian players Jaimee Fourlis and Jason Kubler 6-3, 6-4 to win the mixed doubles championship.
  • Mladenovic also won the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open in 2014 with Daniel Nestor and has two women’s doubles titles in 2018 and 2020 in Australia among her five major women’s doubles titles.
  • Dodig has three other Grand Slam mixed doubles titles and two in men’s doubles, including last year’s Australian Open title with Filip Polášek.
  • Next up on Rod Laver Arena is the first men’s singles semifinal between Rafael Nadal and Matteo Berrettini.
  • Nadal is looking to continue his quest for a record 21st Grand Slam singles title if he can advance to Sunday’s final.

4. INPA and IIFL Home Finance Ltd sign MoU for recruitment of Naval Veterans:

  • The Indian Naval Placement Agency (INPA) and IIFL Home Finance Ltd (IIFL HFL) signed an MoU on 27 Jan 22.
  • Both entities will explore opportunities for the recruitment of Naval Veterans within IIFL HFL who would endeavour to provide an opportunity for Veterans/ Ex-servicemen / dependents competent for various roles in their organisation.
  • Vice Admiral Suraj Berry, Controller of Personnel Services, Indian Navy and Mr. Monu Ratra, ED & CEO, IIFL HFL signed the MoU.
  • INPA was represented by Cmde Pankaj Sharma, Principal Director ESM Affairs & Commander Vijay Kumar, Commander ESM Affairs at NHQ while IIFL Home Finance Ltd was represented by Col Rajesh Shukla (Retd), Lead Sales & Business Development (Uniformed Forces) and Ms Rashmi Priya, Head-HR, IIFL HFL.
  • Through the MoU, INPA will identify a pool of Ex-Servicemen/ dependents candidates for relevant roles as per standards of IIFL HFL.
  • The company will, in turn, enable these individuals’ transition to the corporate sector through in-house assimilation and training programs.
  • IIFL HFL under the aegis of its Diversity inclusion initiative aims to offer Ex-Servicemen opportunities in line with their qualifications, experience, and attributes acquired during their service period.

5. SBI lists maiden issue of $300-mn Formosa bonds on India INX:

  • The State Bank of India’s recent fundraising of $300 million through issuance of Formosa Bonds is a testimony of the confidence reposed by the overseas investors in the country’s growth story, its Chairman Dinesh Khara said.
  • The lender is the first Indian entity to raise money through Formosa Bond, which is a bond issued in Taiwan.
  • The lender had said that a wide range of investors such as supranational agencies, assets managers, private bankers and financial institutions have invested in the issue.
  • On the back of strong demand, the price guidance was revised from T+130 bps area to T+100 bps.

7. Buyhatke launches card sharing platform UseMyCards:

  • Price comparison website Buyhatke has launched UseMyCards, which, it claims, is the first and only credit or debit card sharing platform in the world.
  • The feature helps debit or credit cardholders to offer best of the deals available on their cards to interested online shoppers.
  • UseMyCards allows buyers to get superior deals available on select cards whereas cardholders earn points and rewards on their unutilized or underutilized cards.
  • As per the company, cardholders never have to give any of their card details and the money is held in escrow till the product is delivered to the buyer.
  • The amount is instantly settled to the cardholder once the buyer confirms the receipt.

  • Malaysia’s AirAsia Group said it has changed the name of its listed holding company to Capital A to reflect the diversity of its business portfolio as it seeks to grow its non-airline revenue.

9. L&T bags ‘large’ offshore contract from ONGC for pipeline project:

  • Larsen & Toubro (L&T) said that its wholly-owned arm has bagged a large offshore contract from ONGC for the seventh development phase of their pipeline replacement projects.
  • This contract, awarded through international competitive bidding, reposes ONGC’s confidence in L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering (LTHE) capabilities and commitment to support ONGC in strategic oil and gas sector, and contribute to country’s energy security.
  • The contract involves engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning of 350 km subsea pipelines and related offshore works spread out across country’s west coast offshore fields of ONGC.

10. Meta partners with FICCI to enable 5 lakh women-led SMBs across India

  • Meta said that it has partnered with FICCI to enable and support 5 lakh women-led small businesses across India under its #SheMeansBusiness programme.
  • The announcement was made during Meta’s inaugural National Women Entrepreneurship Summit to encourage industry dialogue around supporting the MSMEs across sectors.
  • Narayan Rane, union minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises said he hopes Meta’s pledge to support 5 lakh women owned businesses will create a supportive ecosystem for women and inspire them to become contributors to the overall development of the country.

11. Google invests USD 1 bn in Bharti Airtel, picks 1.28 pc stake:

  • Google will invest as much as USD 1 billion in Bharti Airtel in picking up a 1.28 per cent stake and in scaling up offerings of India’s second-largest mobile phone operator, the telecom major said.
  • Alphabet Inc’s Google will pay USD 700 million (Rs 734 per share) for a 1.28 per cent stake in Bharti Airtel Ltd and the rest towards multi-year plans that will include devices.
  • This will be the second investment by Google, which had two years ago committed to investing USD 10 billion in India via its digitisation fund over 5 to 7 years through equity deals and tie-up.
  • It had in July 2020, invested USD 4.5 billion for a 7.73 per cent stake in billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Platforms.
  • While the 2020 investment valued Jio Platforms’ equity at Rs 4.36 lakh crore (USD 58.1 billion), the USD 700 million investment announced values Bharti Airtel’s equity at Rs 4.1 lakh crore (USD 54.7 billion).
  • The US tech behemoth got a seat on Jio’s board and has co-developed JioPhone Next – the world’s most affordable all-touchscreen smartphone running on Pragati OS – an optimized version of Android OS.
  • The funding from Google gives billionaire Sunil Mittal-led Bharti more firepower to bolster its 5G plans as well as take on market leader Jio.
  • Google made the investment as part of its Google for India Digitization Fund.
  • The amount Google invested in Jio was Rs 33,737 crore (USD 4.5 billion), which was 6.4 times its investment in Bharti Airtel at Rs 5,250 crore (USD 700 million).
  • Bharti Airtel board has approved the issuance of up to 71,176,839 equity shares of face value of Rs 5 each of the company to Google International LLC on a preferential basis at a price of Rs 734 per equity share aggregating to Rs 5,224.3 crore (around USD 700 million).

12. TVS Motor acquires 75% stake in e-bike maker Swiss E-Mobility:

  • TVS Motor Company said it has acquired 75% stake in the e-bike maker Swiss E-Mobility Group (SEMG) at a valuation of $100 million, with plans to buy out the remaining 25% stake next year.

15. IIFL Finance appoints former SBI boss as chairman:

  • Fairfax and Capital Group-backed non-banking finance company IIFL Finance appointed former State Bank of India boss Arun Purwar as chairman of its board effective from April 1.
  • The appointment was approved by the board of directors in a meeting held
    Purwar is a veteran banker and was Chairman of the country’s largest bank – State Bank of India from November 2002 to May 2006.
  • He was credited with the core banking initiative and stepping up the bank’s focus on the retail segment.
  • He played an important role in starting SBI’s life insurance company- SBI Life Insurance Company.

16. NASA Appoints Veteran Space Scientist Laurie Leshin To Head Jet Propulsion Lab:

  • NASA announced veteran space scientist Laurie Leshin has been appointed to be the new director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
  • Leshin will officially start her new rule on May 16, succeeding Michael Watkins, who retired in August.
  • NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in the press release that under Leshin’s direction, the laboratory will continue to invent technology that will allow humans to explore the universe.
  • In 2005, Leshin became director of science and exploration at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, and in 2008, she was promoted to Goddard’s deputy director for science and technology.
  • In 2010, Leshin assumed the role of deputy associate administrator of the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters, where her work involved the oversight of the future human spaceflight program, including efforts to establish commercial crew capabilities and elements of what is now the Artemis program.
  • Leshin also has some experience in US government. In 2004, Leshin served on President George W. Bush’s Commission on Implementation of United States Space Exploration Policy, and in 2013, President Barack Obama appointed her to the advisory board of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum.

17. IIT Jodhpur researchers develop COVID-19 diagnosis technique using chest X-ray images:

  • The researchers from IIT Jodhpur have developed an automated Artificial Intelligence (AI) solution for COVID-19 prediction from chest X-rays.
  • The experiment was performed with more than 2,500 chest X-ray images and achieved about 96.80 per cent sensitivity.
  • The statement issued by IIT Jodhpur said that the researchers at IIT Jodhpur have proposed a deep learning-based algorithm called COMiT-Net, which learns the abnormalities present in the chest X-ray images to differentiate between a COVID-19 affected lung and a non-COVID affected lung.
  • While there have been numerous research studies in COVID-19 detection using X-ray or CT scans in the past years, most of them fail to provide an explainable solution.
  • The uniqueness of this research is the proposed study which can visually showcase the region which is infected.The technique interprets only from the lung region.

18. CSIR-CCMB to collaborate with Institut Pasteur:

  • Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) through the Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB) will be collaborating with Institut Pasteur (France) in specific health research fields, including genomics of inherited diseases, which will lead to precision and personalised medicines.
  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between CSIR Ddirector general Dr. Shekhar Mande and Institut Pasteur president Prof. Stewart Cole on Tuesday to take the initiative forward.
  • The question of infectious diseases and their ability to re-emerge, better understanding of antimicrobial resistance and research in the development of new models for drug screening are the other areas of collaborative research being planned.

19. India, Central Asia to form working group on Afghanistan, TAPI pipeline talks back on table:

  • In their first-ever summit meeting held, India and the five Central Asian countries of Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyz Republic have decided to form a joint working group on Afghanistan, while agreeing to a “common approach” when dealing with the Taliban regime there.
  • The summit took place virtually between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

20. PM Modi launches Pandit Jasraj Cultural Foundation, calls for globalization of Indian Music:

  • On the birth anniversary of legendary classical vocalist late Pandit Jasraj, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for the globalization of Indian Music.
  • Prime Minister launched Pandit Jasraj Cultural Foundation.
  • Pandit Jasraj, whose career in music spanned over 80 years, belonged to the Mewati Gharana.
  • He received several accolades including the prestigious Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.
  • The legendary classical vocalist passed away at the age of 90 on August 17, 2020.

21. Advanced Light Helicopter MK III aircraft inducted at INS Utkrosh:

  • In a boost to maritime security, the indigenous Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) MK III aircraft was formally inducted at INS Utkrosh by Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN) Lieutenant General Ajai Singh at Port Blair on January 28, 2022.
  • As the rotor blades of the versatile helicopter cut through the air, aircraft were ceremonially welcomed into ANC with a traditional water cannon salute.
  • The induction marks a continuing increase in the capabilities of the A&N Command in the past two decades of its raising as India’s only joint theatre command.
  • The ALH MK III aircraft is manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and represents a tremendous leap towards self-reliance in the field of military aircraft, in line with the government’s push towards ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.
  • Till date, over 300 of these aircraft have been delivered by HAL and are being flown by the Armed Forces.
  • Amongst its variants, the MK III variant is a maritime role variant encompassing state-of-the-art sensors and weapons that add punch to India’s prowess at sea.
  • The ALH MK III aircraft with its glass cockpit, Shakti engines, advanced Maritime Patrol Radar, Electro–optical payload and Night Vision Device will act as a force multiplier in keeping India’s far eastern seaboard and Island territories safe.
  • The state-of-the-art aircraft has multirole capabilities including maritime surveillance, support for Special Forces, medical evacuations besides search and rescue roles.

22. India signs USD 375 mn deal for BrahMos missiles with Philippines:

  • India’s BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) signed a contract with the Department of National Defence of the Republic of Philippines on Friday for the supply of Shore Based Anti-Ship Missile System to the Philippines, the Ministry of Defence said.
  • The BAPL is a joint venture company of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • These missiles are meant for the Philippines Navy.
  • Earlier this month, the Philippines accepted BAPL’s proposal worth USD 374.9 million to supply Shore-Based Anti-Ship Missile systems for the Philippines Navy.
  • DRDO and BAPL together have been pushing hard for exports of this missile to friendly foreign countries for the last few months.
  • The BrahMos export order would be the biggest for the country in this field and is likely to propel India amongst arms exporting countries as more orders for the missile are expected from other friendly countries.

23. Mansukh Mandaviya launches research portal of National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research:

  • Union Minister for Chemical and Fertilizers, Mansukh Mandaviya virtually launched the Research Portal of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER).
  • The visionary augmentation of the department of pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India has led to the establishment of six new NIPERs in 2007.
  • Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also said in just 19 days, more than one crore precaution doses can be administered to healthcare and frontline workers and eligible people above 60 years of age.

24. PM Modi announces constitution of high-level review committee to further empower NCC cadets:

  • Stating that the NCC alumni card that he had received last year has provided him immense strength in delivering upon his responsibilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that a high-level review committee has been formed to further empower the NCC cadets.
  • On November 19 last year, a former National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadet Prime Minister Narendra Modi enrolled himself as the first ‘NCC Alumni Association’ member here during the culmination event of ‘Rashtra Raksha Samarpan Parv’.

25. HUA launches ‘Swachhata Start-Up Challenge’ for transformation in waste management sector:

  • The Union Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) Ministry launched the ”Swachhata Start-Up Challenge” to provide an impetus to innovative start-ups to come forward and drive catalytic transformation in the sanitation and waste management sector, a statement said.
  • The Challenge was launched in partnership with the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
  • The Challenge provides a prominent platform to participating enterprises to showcase their innovative products and services along with significant monetary and mentorship incentive.
  • Top 10 awardees stand to receive Rs 25 lakh along with one year of dedicated incubation support from French Tech, the French government’s initiative to promote start-ups, the statement said.
  • The Challenge was launched by HUA Secretary Manoj Joshi along with H.E. Emmanuel Lenain, Ambassador of France to India, and H.E. Ugo Astuto, Ambassador of the European Union to India, and Bhutan, the ministry said in the statement.
  • Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, launched on October 1 last year, aims to achieve the vision of ‘Garbage Free Cities’ over the next five years through remediation of legacy dumpsites, construction and demolition waste and plastic waste management.

26. 13th Bengaluru International Film Festival to start from March 3:

  • The 13th edition of the Bengaluru International Film Festival is all set to take place from March 3.
  • The decision in this regard was taken at the meeting of the BIFF Organising Committee chaired by Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.
  • The film festival would be a 10-day event.
  • The Chief Minister further said that social messages should be delivered through the film festival.
  • The Chief Minister also released the BIFF logo on the occasion.

27. Tamil Nadu becomes 26th state to align with Centre’s telecom RoW rules:

  • Tamil Nadu has become the 26th state to issue Right of Way (RoW) rules for easing telecom infrastructure rollout in the state, in line with the guidelines issued by the Centre in November 2016, as per telecom industry bodies.
  • Delhi, Gujarat, Kerala and the union territory of Daman and Diu are yet to align their rules with the guidelines issued by the Centre to facilitate expeditious rollout of telecom networks.
  • Telecom industry body COAI appreciated the notification of the Tamil Nadu Telecom Infrastructure Policy 2022 and said the bye-laws are applicable to all city areas, municipal councils, town municipal councils, town panchayats, etc and include telecom towers and OFC (aerial and underground).
  • The policy encourages the deployment of towers, OFC, cell on wheel, micro sites, small cell, in-building solution etc that are essential to improve the digital connectivity across urban municipal corporations and other areas of Tamil Nadu.
  • The policy also supports the regularisation of the existing telecom infrastructure that will contribute towards the growth of the state.

28. Andhra Pradesh govt partners with Amul to distribute milk to Anganwadi centres:

  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy launched a new scheme in Anantapur district partnering with Amul to produce and distribute milk to Anganwadi centres.
  • The scheme, Jaganna Palavelluva is part of a state government initiative to develop the dairy sector in the state. The government signed an agreement with Amul in this regard.
  • The chief minister virtually launched the project.
  • The state government will collect milk from dairy farmers, providing them with a good price and lowering the influence of middlemen and other vendors.
  • In addition, two Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) were signed with Amul to supply Balamrutham (weaning food introduced under ICDS to provide improved supplementary nutrition to children between 7 months to 3 years) and the delivery of flavored milk to Anganwadi children.
  • The dairy farmers had raised the issue when the price of one litre of water was much higher than that of milk.
  • The state government has also set up BMC (Bulk Milk Coolers) units at every milk collection point and is setting up AMC (Automatic milk collection) units as well. Inspections will also be carried out to reduce fraudulent practices.

29. AUS bags Rs 15 crore project from Survey of India to map Haryana:

  • Drone technology start-up Aarav Unmanned Systems (AUS) said it has bagged a large-scale mapping project from the Survey of India worth USD 2 million (about Rs 15 crore) to map the entire state of Haryana.
  • The state is spread over an area of around 32,000 square kilometers, the company said.
    Under this project, AUS will deploy its proprietary survey grade drones to ensure accurate data capturing which will further be processed by the Survey of India to update the revenue maps and GIS database by digitising the land records.
  • AUS has mapped roughly 10,000 villages and completed its contract for mapping villages in Uttarakhand successfully till date, the statement said.

30. India’s largest EV charging station opened at National Highway in Gurugram:

  • India’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging station with a capacity of 100 charging points for 4 wheelers, was opened on Friday at Delhi-Jaipur National Highway in Gurugram.
  • Previously, India’s largest EV charging station was situated in Navi Mumbai with 16 AC & 4 DC charging ports for EVs.
  • The new EV charging station has been developed by tech-piloting company Alektrify Private Limited.
  • During the inauguration programme, the representatives from the government agencies were given a guided tour of the facility and provided with information regarding various government standard compliances and industry best practices followed in the establishment and operations of the station.
