  • Innovation in manufacturing is the lowest in the Northeastern states (excluding Assam), followed by Bihar.
  • Apart from Northeastern states, low-performing states include Jharkhand, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
  • Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu had the highest share of innovative firms at 46.18 per cent, 39.10 per cent and 31.90 per cent, respectively, among the total manufacturing firms surveyed from the respective states, according to the report.
  • Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand reported the least share of innovative firms at 12.78 per cent, 13.47 per cent and 13.71 per cent, respectively.
  • In 2019, the Department of Science and Technology decided to follow up with a second nationwide innovation survey and assigned the innovation survey to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), with a view to focus on manufacturing and associated services spread across large, medium, small, and micro-enterprises.

  • The new facility will help business correspondents (BCs) of the bank to open an account just by undertaking face authentication e-KYC.
  • The authentication is processed using a newly developed mobile application by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), as a result, BCs will now only need a smartphone to open an account. The bank will make this facility available across all its five-lakh banking points by end of this year.
  • This is Airtel Payments Bank’s one more initiative after it recently integrated with the National Payments Corporation of India’s (NPCI) – National Financial Switch (NFS) to facilitate Micro ATM transactions for debit card users residing beyond the metro and tier 1 cities in India.

  • The mission will subsume two major programmes – Development Action Plan for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribe Component – of the Centre. The two programmes required 41 central ministries and departments to allocate at least the population proportion of Budget outlay – which is 16.6% for Scheduled Castes and 8.6% for Scheduled Tribes – for targeted schemes for SCs and STs.

  • The Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, has launched the scheme, “Vivad seVishwas I – Relief to MSMEs” for providing relief to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) for COVID-19 period. The scheme was announced in the Union Budget 2023-24 by Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman.
  • Under the scheme, Ministries have been asked to refund performance security, bid security and liquidated damages forfeited/ deducted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Certain relief has also been provided to MSMEs debarred for default in execution of contracts during the COVID-19 period.
  • The Ministry of Finance, through this scheme, decided to give following additional benefits to eligible MSMEs, affected during the COVID-19 period:
    • 95% of the performance security forfeited shall be refunded.
    • 95% of the Bid security shall be refunded.
    • 95% of the Liquidated Damages (LD) deducted shall be refunded.
    • 95% of the Risk Purchase amount realized shall be refunded.
    • In case any firm has been debarred only due to default in execution of such contracts, such debarment shall also be revoked, by issuing an appropriate order by the procuring entity. However, in case a firm has been ignored for placement of any contract due to debarment in the interim period (i.e. date of debarment and the date of revocation under this order), no claim shall be entertained.
    • No interest shall be paid on such refunded amount.
  • As per the Office Memorandum issued by the Department of Expenditure to Secretaries of all the Ministries/ Departments of Government of India and Chief Secretaries/ Administrators of Union Territories, relief will be provided in all contracts for procurement of Goods and Services, entered into by any Ministry/ Department/ attached or subordinate office/ autonomous body/ Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE)/ Central Public Sector Banks/ Financial Institution etc. with MSMEs, which meet the following criteria:
    • Registered as a Medium, Small or Micro Enterprise as per relevant scheme of Ministry of MSME on the date of claim by supplier/ contractor. MSME could be registered for any category of Goods and Services.
    • The original delivery period/ completion period stipulated in contract was between 19.02.2020 and 31.03.2022 (both dates are inclusive).
  • Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has developed a dedicated web-page for implementation of this scheme. Eligible claims shall be processed only through GeM.

  • The trial of the storage structure was successfully conducted on April 30 in the presence of the Armed Forces by detonating 5,000 kg of TNT in one of the chambers of the underground facility.
  • This facility is designed to ensure an explosion within which will not cause damage to the adjacent chamber and also ensure full operability of the remaining facility.
  • The facility is aimed at enabling upward vertical dissipation of blast effects, considerably reducing the blast effect on surrounding utilities.
  • Also, The Indian Navy and Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful maiden test trial of ‘ADC-150’ from an IL 38SD aircraft off the coast of Goa.
  • The ‘ADC-150’ is an indigenously designed and developed ‘Air Droppable Container’ with a 150 kg payload capacity.
  • The trial was conducted to enhance naval operational logistics capabilities to meet the requirement of engineering stores for ships (under distress), which are deployed more than 2,000 kms from the coast.
  • The ‘ADC-150’ reduces the requirement for ships to come close to the coast to collect spares and stores.
