  • International Malala Day is celebrated on 12 July, every year, to honour and observe the bravery of Malala Yousafzai.
  • The United Nations first celebrated International Malala Day on July 12, 2013 – a year after she was shot by a Taliban gunman in Pakistan for opposing their restrictions on female education in the country.
  • The meeting of the UN was addressed by former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who was then serving as UN Special Envoy for Global Education. The day also coincides with Malala’s birthday.
  • She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 at just the age of 17 for her advocacy of girls’ education.
  • In 2013, she and her father co-founded the Malala Fund to bring awareness to the social and economic impact of girls’ education and to empower girls to demand change.

  • The World Archery Youth Championships 2023 had events for men’s and women’s recurve and compound archers in the under-21 and under-18 age categories.
  • Individual, as well as team events, took place at the University of Limerick. India sent 12 archers each in the U21 and U18 age groups.
  • At the last edition of the World Archery Youth Championships held in 2021 in Wroclaw, Poland, India won 15 medals, including eight golds.

  • India topped the medals tally at the 34th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2023, held in Al Ain, UAE, from July 3 to 11, by securing four gold medals.
  • For the first time, India has turned in an all-gold performance and topped the medals tally in IBO.
  • The student’s team this year was DhruvAdvani (Gold) from Bengaluru, Karnataka, Ishan Pednekar (Gold) from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, MeghChhabda (Gold) from Jalna, Maharashtra, Rohit Panda (Gold) from Risali, Chhattisgarh.
  • The team was accompanied by two leaders, Professor Madan M. Chaturvedi (Former Senior Professor, Delhi University) and Dr AnupamaRonad (HomiBhabhaCenter for Science Education, TIFR), and two Scientific Observers, Dr V. V. Binoy (National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru) and Dr RambhadurSubedi (NIRRH, Mumbai).
  • There were 293 students from 76 countries in this year’s IBO. After India, Singapore was the only other country to secure four gold medals.
  • In all 29 gold medals were awarded.
  • Earlier, India topped the medals tally in Astronomy and Astrophysics (in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015, and 2021), Physics (in 2018), and Junior Science (in 2014, 2019, 2021, and 2022).
  • The International Biology Olympiad organises the world’s premier biology competition for secondary school students with an aim to stimulate and expand their talents to promote their future careers as students.

  • The deals are expected to be worth around Rs 90,000 crore.

  • Both Ministers also unveiled a book titled ‘Healthy Recipes for Defence’ to promote the consumption of Shree Anna (millets) and its health benefits.
  • The MoU was signed by Lt. Gen. PreetMohindera Singh, Director General (Supplies and Transport) on behalf of Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Ms Inoshi Sharma, Executive Director, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
  • It aims to create awareness about the nutritional benefits of diet diversity and millet-based food products among the personnel.
  • The book ‘Healthy Recipes for Defence’, developed by FSSAI, includes a range of millet-based dishes. It will serve as a valuable resource for different canteens and food outlets under the MoD.

  • The DGNSS service will help mariners in safe navigation and will reduce the risk of collisions, groundings, and accidents in the port and harbour areas. This will lead to safe & efficient movement of vessels.
