  • Mumbai-based retail banking and financial services provider, HSBC India had announced to lend $250 million to startups in the country.
  • HSBC will manage the lending through its commercial banking vertical.
  • The announcement comes at the time when startups debt needs by financial intermediaries locally have accelerated amidst ‘funding winter’ impacting equity funding to the sector.
  • Further, in a statement, HSBC stated that the lending will be done to high-growth, tech-led startups in the third largest startups ecosystem in the world.
  • In 2021, HSBC’s commercial banking vertical in India had registered a growth of 42% in its profit to $265 million compared to $187 million a year-ago period. Further, the lender’s loans to small and medium enterprises have tripled to around $1 billion as compared to $300 million in 2018.

  • Retail inflation based on Consumer Price Index eased to 7.04 per cent in May from 7.79 per cent in April this year.
  • As per the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation data released, inflation slipped mainly due to easing prices in “Food & Beverages” and “Fuel & light” sections.
  • Food inflation in stood at 7.84 per cent in the corresponding period against 8.31 percent in the previous month.
  • Inflation for fuel and light was 9.54 percent in May this year against 10.8 in preceding month.
  • Food & Beverages have a weightage of more than 54 percent in Consumer Price Index while spends on Fuel & light weights around eight percent in the index.
  • The government had mandated the central bank to maintain retail inflation at four per cent with a margin of two per cent on either side for a five-year period ending March 2026.

  • Germany, which was the biggest importer of Russian fossil fuels during the first two months of the war, slipped to second place behind China 12.6 billion euros worth of energy from Moscow.

  • Mr. Gadkari said the National Highway-133B project spanning over 21 kilometer, is a one-of-its-kind project involving the construction of a six-kilometer-long Ganga Bridge.
  • It is the world’s third-longest extradosed bridge.
  • The highway once constructed will connect Sahibganj in Jharkhand to Manihari in Bihar and aims to reduce travel distance.
  • This will also serve as a strategic connecting point to the North East.
  • Currently, under construction, nearly three thousand construction workers have been engaged to deliver this project costing one thousand nine hundred crore rupees.
  • Mr. Gadkari also informed that the project for Six-Laning of National Highway 140 from Chittoor to Mallavaram in Andhra Pradesh will be completed by 30th September this year.
  • This ministry is working in mission mode to complete this project which is being constructed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana.
