  • As designated by the World Stroke Organization (WSO), the theme for World Stroke Day 2023 is ‘Together we are #Greater Than Stroke.’
  • In the 1990s, the European Stroke Initiative came up with the idea of holding a day of awareness
  • The European Stroke Organization, which spearheaded the initiative, observes its awareness day on May 10. October 29 is designated as World Stroke Day, an event that was started in 2004 during the World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, Canada.
  • A working group headed by Dr. Vladimir Hachinski was formed, and in October 2006, it became the World Stroke Proclamation. About the same time that the World Stroke Federation and the International Stroke Society merged, the World Stroke Organization was established, taking over as the organization responsible for World Stroke Day.
  • The WSO leadership moved from focusing on a single awareness day to a year-round campaign in 2009 in order to develop a more sustained strategy for increasing public awareness of significant issues in stroke recognition, prevention, and treatment.
  • The WSO launched its first campaign in 2010 called “1 in 6” (Archived 2010-10-28 at the Wayback Machine).

International Day of Care and Support

  • The United Nations General Assembly, through a groundbreaking resolution (A/RES/77/317), has proclaimed an International Day of Care and Support, to be commemorated on 29 October.
  • The resolution calls upon Member States, the UN system, civil society, the private sector, academia, and the public to observe the international day annually.
  • It acknowledges the disproportionate burden of unpaid care and domestic work on women and girls and highlights the need to address these structural barriers, which hinder women’s empowerment.

Infantry Day

  • 77th Infantry Day is observed on 27 October
  • Infantry Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the landing of the 1st Battalion of the SIKH Regiment at Srinagar airfield on 27 Oct 1947 to protect the people of Jammu & Kashmir from the nefarious designs of Pakistani Kabaili Raiders aided by the Pakistan Army.
  • This gallant action resulted in foiling of Pakistan’s plans to occupy Jammu & Kashmir.

  • The redesigned scheme, was almost ready and would be placed before the Cabinet for approval.
  • The Yojana was launched in 2018 to provide free coaching to Delhi-based students from the SC, ST, OBC and EWS categories to prepare for entrance exams for professional courses (engineering, medical and law) and competitive exams for jobs (civil services and banking).
  • Under the scheme, the Delhi government also paid Rs 2,500 per month as stipend to the students to help them commute to the coaching centres and purchase books and other stationery items.
  • One batch of nearly 5,000 students was provided training before it had to be stopped due to Covid-19.
  • The scheme was restarted in November 2021 and nearly 13,000 students registered for free coaching.
  • The institutes, however, stopped holding classes after the government failed to make payment.

  • Though BIS hallmarking was applicable only to pieces above 2 grams in weight, gold merchants gave hallmarking and hallmarking unique identification numbers even for pieces with weight below two grams
  • The facility for tracking the ornaments using the Unique ID number was not fully operational. Once hallmarked, the buyer should be able to track the pieces bought by her/him using the tracking facility. The identification number would provide the exact content of gold in the ornament, the centre of hallmarking, weight, etc
  • Mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery/artefacts was successfully implemented under the Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020 in 256 districts across the country from June 23, 2021, and this has gone up to 350 districts.
  • The number of hallmarking centres also increased from 945 to 1500, and the number of licenses availed by jewellery outlets rose to 2 lakh from 34,647 in the beginning.
  • Around 4 lakh gold ornaments are being hallmarked in India on a daily basis

  • The project is another step towards the Government’s target of achieving 500 GW of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel (Renewable Energy + Nuclear) sources by 2030.
  • The SPV has been handed over by CEO, RECPDCL, Shri Rajesh Kumar to Executive Director, PGCIL, Shri Pankaj Pandey on 26th October 2023. Executive Director, CTUIL, Shri Jasbir Singh; CGM, RECPDCL, Shri P.S. Hariharan and other senior officials of RECPDCL, CTUIL and PGCIL were also present on the occasion.
  • The selection of M/s Power Grid Corporation of India Limited as the Transmission Service Provider was carried out through Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) carried out by RECPDCL, in line with the Standard Bidding Documents and Guidelines, as notified by the Ministry of Power, Government of India.
  • With the handing over of the above SPV, RECPDCL successfully handed over 54 transmission projects till now costing around Rs. 75,000 crores.
  • REC Limited, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, is an NBFC focusing on Power Sector Financing and Development across India.
  • Established in 1969, REC Limited provides long-term loans and other finance products for the Power-Infrastructure sector comprising Generation, Transmission, Distribution, Renewable Energy and new technologies like Electric Vehicles, Battery Storage and Green Hydrogen. REC has also diversified into the core infrastructure sector comprising Roads, Metro, Airports, IT and Ports. The Loan Book of REC stands at Rs 4.54 Lakh Crore, at the end of the first quarter of the current financial year.
  • Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Schedule ‘A’ ‘Maharatna’ Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, was incorporated in October 1989.
  • POWERGRID is India’s largest Electric Power Transmission Utility and a listed Company, with majority holding by the Government of India and the balance being held by Institutional Investors and the public.
