  • One of the popular political leaders in Kerala and a crowd puller, Chandy served as the state’s chief minister from 2011 to 2016, and from 2004 to 2006.
  • He had also served as the Opposition leader in the Kerala Assembly from 2006 to 2011.
  • Chandy, known as a mass leader who loved to live among the people, was the longest-serving legislator in the Kerala Assembly.
  • He had represented the Puthuppally Assembly constituency from 1970 successively until his death.
  • When Chandy won the Assembly elections of 2021, it was his 12th consecutive win from the same seat.

  • The Maharastra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and the Government of Maharashtra launched the PM MITRA Park in Amravati in Mumbai.

  • The PM-MITRA scheme, first announced in the Union Budget 2021-22 aims to develop seven integrated large scale and modern industrial infrastructure facility for the entire textile value chain, from fibre to fabric to garment.
  • Subsequently, in March 2023, the centre announced setting up of mega textile parks in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh under the scheme.
  • Each park will come up in at least 1,000 acre land with ready nearby availability of raw material, fully-equipped infrastructure including port, road and rail connectivity, water and power availability etc.
  • For a greenfield PM-MITRA park, the Centre’s development capital support will be 30 per cent of the project cost, with a cap of Rs 500 crore.
  • For brownfield sites, after assessment, development capital support of 30 per cent of project cost of balance infrastructure and other support facilities to be developed will be extended. The limit has been set at Rs 200 crore.

This meant that their purview was limited to datasets like the Periodic Labour Force Survey, the Annual Survey of Industries, the Index of Industrial Production and the Economic Census.
  • Pronab Sen, India’s first chief statistician and the former Chairman of the National Statistical Commission, has been named the new chair of the committee.
  • It has 10 official members, and four non-official members who are eminent academics.
  • The panel can have up to 16 members
  • The SCES was also chaired by Sen. It had 28 members, including 10 non-official members,
  • The move comes after the previous round of household surveys on consumption expenditure and employment was discarded due to concerns about “data quality”.
  • The order was issued by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) on July 13.
  • The panel will help finalise survey results, but the NSC will have the ultimate authority to approve the publication of those results.

  • Union home minister and minister of cooperation Amit Shah launched ‘CRCS-Sahara Refund Portal’ in the national capital for disbursement against the legitimate dues of the genuine depositors of the Sahara Group of Cooperative Societies.
  • The portal aims to faciliate the refund of hard earned money of crores of depositors in four cooperative societies of Sahara Group in about 45 days.
  • This is the first time when depositors are getting refunds in a case where multiple government agencies are involved and each one has done a seizure
  • The depositors that no one can stop their money now and that they will get the refund in 45 days after registering on the portal.
  • The portal has been developed for submission of legitimate claims by the genuine depositors of Sahara Credit Cooperative Society Ltd., Saharayan Universal Multipurpose Society Ltd., Humara India Credit Cooperative Society Ltd and Stars Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd.
  • The claims of 1.7 crore depositors will be settled through the portal in the first phase.
  • Money will be returned to 10 crore investors of the four cooperative societies within 9 months. The announcement followed a Supreme Court order directing transfer of Rs 5,000 crore from Sahara-Sebi refund account to the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies (CRCS).
  • Depositors would get up to Rs 10,000 refund and subsequently the amount would be enhanced for those who have invested higher amounts.
  • The corpus of Rs 5,000 crore would be able to take care of the needs of 1.7 crore depositors in the first phase
  • About 2.5 crore people have deposits of up to Rs 30,000 in the four cooperative societies namely Sahara Credit Cooperative Society Ltd, Saharayan Universal Multipurpose Society Ltd, Humara India Credit Cooperative Society Ltd and Stars Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd.
  • The portal is developed by a subsidiary of IFCI, for submission of legitimate claims by the depositors of these cooperative societies.
  • In March, the Supreme Court had directed that Rs 5,000 crore be transferred out of the ‘Sahara-Sebi Refund Account’, to CRCS for disbursement against the legitimate dues of the depositors.
  • The depositers will first have to register themselves on the CRCS Sahara Refund Portal.
  • There are two important requirements for the claim process: Aadhaar registration with mobile and Aadhaar-linking with the bank account where refund is to be deposited.
