2. Why has the Reserve Bank of India imposed a penalty of Rs 2 crore on State Bank of India?

  • Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty of Rs 2 crore on State Bank of India for “contravention of provisions of sub-section (2) of Section 19 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 (the BR Act), and sub-section (2) of Section 26A of the BR Act read with the Depositor Education Awareness Fund Scheme, 2014.
    • The Statutory Inspection for Supervisory Evaluation for FY22 revealed that SBI held shares as pledgee of an amount exceeding 30 per cent of paid-up share capital of certain companies.
    • It also failed to credit eligible amount to Depositor Education and Awareness Fund within the period prescribed in the BR Act.
  • The central bank also imposed a fine of Rs 32.30 lakh on Canara Bank for non-compliance with certain directions on ‘Data Format for Furnishing of Credit Information to Credit Information Companies and other Regulatory Measures’, ‘Resolution Framework 2.0 – Resolution of Covid-19 related stress of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)’ and ‘Resolution Framework – 2.0: Resolution of Covid-19 Related Stress of Individuals and Small Businesses’
  • City Union Bank also faced a penalty of Rs 66 lakh for non-compliance with certain directions on ‘Prudential Norms on Income Recognition, Asset Classification and Provisioning Pertaining to Advances – Divergence in NPA Accounts’ and KYC guidelines.
  • There was significant divergence between the NPAs reported by the bank and as assessed during the RBI inspection.

  • Bikaner Solar Power Project is being developed by SJVN through SGEL under CPSU Scheme of IREDA at a cost of Rs. 5,491 crores.
  • The project is being developed under the Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) mode and is slated for commissioning by July 2024.
  • The power generated from the project will be used by government entities, either directly or through discoms.

  • The platform has information on more than 200,000 start-ups, close to 11,000 angel investors and 5,000 VCs, about 1000 incubators, more than 100 Govt agencies that fund start-ups, and about 550 banks that have supported the start-ups.

  • Ministry of Ayush and Ministry of Women and Child Development have signed a MoU for the nutritional improvement in adolescent girls through Ayurveda Interventions.
  • It is a Joint Public Health Initiative for “Anaemia Control among adolescent girls using Ayurveda interventions in the five districts under Mission Utkarsh”, at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.
  • Both the Ministries have jointly decided that in the first phase, the focus may be given to improve the anaemic status of adolescent girls (14-18 years) in five aspirational districts of five states namely Assam–Dhubri; Chhattisgarh- Bastar; Jharkhand – Paschimi Singhbhum; Maharashtra – Gadchiroli; Rajasthan – Dhaulpur.
  • The Ministry of Ayush and Ministry of Women and Child Development have entered into this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim of nutritional improvement of approximately 95,000 adolescent girls in the Anaemia prone districts (where average prevalence of anaemia is approximately 69.5 %).
  • This project will cover approximately 10,000 Anganwadi Centres in the five districts.
  • To achieve the goal of ‘Anaemia Mukt Bharat’ (Anaemia Free India) MoU has been signed between both of the Ministries.

Mission Utkarsh:

  • This Initiative launched by Hon’ble PM to improve the KPIs (Key Performance Indicator) of Percentage covered inhabited census villages with mobile in district for 10 selected districts to State average in One year and to National average or better in Two Years’ Time from the current level.
