Chennai social activist Traffic Ramaswamy dies at 87:

  • Prolific social activist and crusader K R Ramaswamy, popularly known as Traffic Ramaswamy, passed away on Tuesday in Chennai.
  • He was 87.
  • The activist had been admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai a few days ago for treatment. According to doctors, the activist, who had been on ventilator support, suffered a cardiac arrest and could not be revived.
  • A prolific activist in Chennai who was known for campaigning against the rampant poster culture in the state, Traffic Ramaswamy was also known for filing Public Interest Litigations (PILs) in the Madras High Court against footpath encroachments, road widening and encroachments and traffic violations.
  • Ramaswamy was also a founding member of the Tamil Nadu Home Guard.

  • To check the devastating coronavirus that gripped the country, the Reserve Bank of India announced a targeted on-tap liquidity window of Rs 50,000 crore to set up Covid-related healthcare infrastructure.
  • Under the scheme, banks can provide fresh lending support to a wide range of entities including vaccine manufactures; importers/suppliers of vaccines and priority medical devices; hospitals/dispensaries; pathology labs; manufactures and suppliers of oxygen and ventilators; importers of vaccines and Covid related drugs; logistics firms and also patients for treatment.
  • The moratorium will be available to individuals and small and medium enterprises that have not restructured their loans in 2020 and were classified as standard accounts till March 2021.

RBI offers fresh loan moratorium to Individual, small borrowers having loans up to Rs 25 crore:

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das on Wednesday provided 2nd window to individual, small borrowers having up to Rs 25 crore loans for restructuring loans if not availed earlier.
  • The moratorium will be available to individuals and small and medium enterprises that have not restructured their loans in 2020 and were classified as standard accounts till March 2021.
  • Restructuring under the proposed framework may be invoked up to September 30, 2021 and shall have to be implemented within 90 days after invocation
  • In respect of individual borrowers and small businesses who have availed restructuring of their loans under Resolution Framework 1.0, where the resolution plan permitted moratorium of less than two years, lending institutions are being permitted to use this window to modify such plans to the extent of increasing the period of moratorium or extending the residual tenor up to a total of 2 years.

  • The world’s biggest airplane – longer than an American football field and with a wingspan of three Boeing 747s – completed its second test flight from Mojave Air and Space Port in California.
  • Built by Stratolaunch, the plane named Roc – with a wingspan of 117 metres and powered by 6 Boeing 747 engines – is being groomed to carry and launch supersonic vehicles high up in the sky.
  • During three hour test flight, Roc reached an altitude of 4,267m and a top speed of 320 km/h.
  • Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen established Stratolaunch in 2011 with the idea that Roc would be used to launch satellites in midair.
  • But Allen died in October 2018 without seeing that vision become reality, or even seeing the twin-fuselage Roc get off the ground. The plane didn’t make its first — and, until today, only — test flight until April 2019.
  • The company was sold in October 2019 to its current owners, who recast Roc’s role.
    The plane will now serve as a mobile launch platform for hypersonic vehicles, maneuverable craft that travel at least five times faster than the speed of sound.

  • Lauding the people-friendly initiative of the Punjab Urban Development Authority (PUDA), the Chief Minister said it would hugely benefit the citizens across the state and enable them to avail all services regarding property matters in a smooth and transparent manner, thus eliminating inordinate delays and corrupt practices in the process.
  • This unique online portal would ensure completely paperless functioning, from application to the final output, in a time-bound manner. Input forms have been carefully designed in a simple format to enable an average citizen to understand and fill it.
  • The documents to be submitted are clearly mentioned at the top of each application, along with the steps of its processing and time to be taken at each level.
  • The entire organisational hierarchies have been mapped in the software, with posting updation at each position.
  • The action at each level is time bound and limited to authorisation, and no intermediary level can raise query to the applicant or return it, which is currently the main reason behind delays and harassment of citizens.

  • The board has asked schools to nominate four or five teachers for the programme.
  • In this programme, teachers will be trained in four modules – design thinking and innovation, idea generation and ideal hand-holding, intellectual property rights, product/prototype development.
  • The first batch will start on May 17.
  • The programme will be launched formally on May 13.
