1. International Fire Fighters’ Day celebrated on which date?

  • International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is observed annually on May 4 to honor the work of firefighting professionals, who dedicate their lives to the protection of people and property.

  • Besides other celebrations, current and past firefighters are thanked and honored for their work on this day.

History of the Day:

  • The IFFD was instituted after a proposal was emailed out across the word on January 4, 1999.
  • This happened shortly after the death of five firefighters in the bushfires in Australia in 1998.
  • Firefighters in Linton, Australia were fighting a large bushfire and had called for mutual aid.
  • Five firefighters – Garry Vredeveldt, Chris Evans, Stuart Davidson, Jason Thomas, and Matthew Armstrong – all loaded into the company’s truck and were dispatched as a strike team to help extinguish the bushfire.
  • The five were doing their work in the hot zone when suddenly the wind changed direction and engulfed their truck in flames, killing all the 5 five firefighters.
  • The tragic event, which happened on December 2, 1988, shook the world.
  • The events of the day inspired JJ Edmondson to introduce an international holiday, which later came to be known as International Firefighters’ Day.

World Asthma Day is celebrated every year on the first Tuesday of May:

  • The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) in collaboration with health care groups and asthma educators, organizes events to spread awareness and care around this respiratory disease.

History of World Asthma Day:

  • World Asthma Day was first celebrated in 1998 in more than 35 countries along with the first World Asthma Meeting held in Barcelona, Spain.

Theme of World Asthma Day 2021:

  • The theme for this year World Asthma Day is ‘Uncovering Asthma Misconceptions’.

5. RBI imposed how much amount monetary penalty on ICICI Bank for contravention of certain directions?

  • The RBI has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 3 crore on ICICI Bank for ”Contravention of certain directions issued by the RBI contained in Master Circular on ‘Prudential Norms for Classification, Valuation and Operation of Investment Portfolio by Banks’, the central bank said.
  • ICICI Bank in a stock exchange filing said the penalty has been imposed under certain provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 for shifting certain investments from HTM category to AFS category in May 2017.
  • After considering the banks reply to the notice, oral submissions made in the personal hearing and examination of additional submissions made by it, the RBI said it came to the conclusion that the charge of non-compliance with RBI directions was substantiated and warranted imposition of monetary penalty.

RBI imposes ₹25.50 lakh penalty on Jaipur-based Jumbo Finvest (India) Ltd:

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹25.50 lakh on Jumbo Finvest (India) Ltd, Jaipur, for non-compliance with provisions of two of its directions.
  • RBI, in a statement, said the monetary penalty has been imposed for non-compliance with certain provisions of its directions contained in ‘Non-Banking Financial Company – Systemically Important Non-Deposit taking Company and Deposit taking Company (Reserve Bank) Directions, 2016’ and ‘Reserve Bank of India, Know Your Customer (KYC) Directions, 2016’.
  • “This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers vested in RBI under the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, taking into account the failure of the company to adhere to the aforesaid directions issued by RBI,” the statement said.

  • This is in addition to the company’s ongoing investments in people and communities, Rekha M Menon, Chairperson and Senior Managing Director of Accenture in India, said in a blog post on LinkedIn.
  • Additionally, Accenture will be augmenting existing hospitals with beds and ICUs and setting up portable hospitals.
  • Menon – who was recently appointed as the Chairperson for IT industry body Nasscom – said Accenture is also engaging with the government to support vaccination camps and provide local language call-center support.
  • To support its over 2,00,000 employees and their families in India, the company has built several resources including 24/7 telemedicine, care-at-home services, enhanced insurance coverage, virtual childcare, mental health support, and support for testing and vaccinations.
  • IT companies like Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys and HCL Technologies are taking a number of steps to contribute to these efforts, including setting up COVID care centers at their facilities.
  • Capgemini has committed Rs 50 crore to augment medical infrastructure in India, while SAP said it is doubling its COVID-19 Emergency Fund that was announced last year to 6 million euros.

  • The Pune-based vaccine manufacturer is among a list of nearly 20 Indian companies across sectors such as healthcare, biotech and software services to announce significant investment plans in the UK.
  • It was also revealed that the Serum Institute of India (SII) has started phase one trials in the UK of a nasal vaccine against coronavirus.
  • The sales office is expected to generate new business worth over USD 1 billion, GBP 200 million of which will be invested into the UK, Downing Street said in reference to SII’s plans for the UK market.
  • Serum’s investment will support clinical trials, research and development and possibly manufacturing of vaccines.
  • This will help the UK and the world to defeat the coronavirus pandemic and other deadly diseases.
  • Serum has already started phase one trials in the UK of a one-dose nasal vaccine for coronavirus, in partnership with Codagenix INC, it said.
  • In the field of healthcare, another Indian investment highlight includes GBP 59 million by biotech firm Global Gene Corp over the next five years.
  • It will create 110 highly skilled jobs in the UK, mostly based in the R&D centre at Wellcome Genome Campus in Cambridge, which is the site of the Human Genome Project.

  • This model of monthly micro-scholarships is a 1st of its kind and goes a long way in incentivizing the learning outcomes.
  • Since the national launch around one and a half years ago, lakhs of users have registered themselves on Auro Scholar App and around 15 lakh assessments have been taken by the students since the start of the programme.

  • “The tenure of these incentives shall be initially for a period of 03 months and will be paid from May 2021 onwards”.

  • Jharkhand-based steel plants have been supplying medical oxygen to various states amid the COVID-19 crisis.
  • Domestic giant Tata Steel has stepped up the supply of liquid medical oxygen (LMO) to 800 tonne per day from its plants, including in Jamshedpur, while SAIL through its arm in Bokaro is pumping oxygen to the states that are facing an acute shortage.
  • Responding to the national urgency, Tata Steel is currently supplying 800 tonne per day of LMO to various Indian states and hospitals, through its manufacturing units in Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), Kalinganagar (Odisha), and Dhenkanal (Odisha), an official said.
  • It is supplying liquid medical oxygen to Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Odisha, among others.
  • State-run Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has supplied 4,695 tonnes of LMO to various states since April.
  • The Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) of SAIL has supplied 4,694.51 metric tonne of liquid medical oxygen to Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand from April 1 to May 2.
