History:

• It was in the year 1993 when the United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 as the World Press Freedom Day.
• This declaration came after a recommendation made in 1991 at the twenty-sixth General Conference session of UNESCO.
• The declaration also came as a result of 1991 Windhoek Declaration; a statement which was produced by African journalists about press freedom, presented at a seminar held by UNESCO, which concluded on May 3.

Significance:

• The day is celebrated to ensure the protection and safety of the press in the face of attacks against its independence, to discuss journalistic ethics and to celebrate journalists who gave their lives in the pursuit of truth.
• There are ten nations – China, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Eritrea, Djibouti, Turkmenistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran and Cuba – where press freedom is severely limited.
• World Press Day remind us that many publications and their editors and reporters are often prevented from doing their jobs, censored and banned.

• The theme for World Press Day 2021 is “Information as a Public Good.”

• State Bank of India (SBI) has allocated Rs 71 crore to support various initiatives in combating the second wave of Covid-19 and is in talks with various designated authorities to explore partnerships for setting up makeshift hospitals.
• The country’s largest commercial bank has dedicated Rs 30 crore to set up 1,000 bed makeshift hospitals, 250 bed ICU facilities and 1,000 bed isolation facilities across some of the worst-hit states.
• These facilities will be set up in collaboration with government hospitals and municipal corporations of respective cities, the SBI said.
• SBI will also contribute Rs 10 crore for genome-sequencing equipment, lab and vaccine research equipment to the government.
• Besides, SBI has allocated Rs 21 crore to all its 17 local head offices to address urgent medical needs of citizens including procuring life-saving healthcare equipment and enhancing oxygen supply to hospitals.
• It will continue to provide PPE kits, masks, rations and cooked meals.
• The bank will also spend Rs 10 crore in partnering with NGOs to undertake community-based testing, strengthening vaccination drives, creating helpline for Covid-19 related matters, providing oxygen supply and other critical activities.

• Lt Gen Kanitkar, who is the third woman to become a three-star general in the armed forces, is working round the clock to strategise and monitor steps to provide relief to COVID-19 patients.
• “Under the CO-JEET” plan, personnel of the three wings of the armed forces – the Army, the Indian Air Force and the Navy – have been pressed into service to help restore oxygen supply chains, set up COVID beds and provide help to the civilian administration
• in its fight to control the pandemic,” said the Lt General, whose post of deputy chief integrated defence staff (medical) comes under the Chief of Defence Staff.
• “CO-JEET stands for co-workers of all the three services who will finally achieve ‘Jeet’ (victory) over COVID.The whole team is working in a very energised way because a soldier is trained to fight under adverse situations and he doesn’t give up, we are not just doctors, we are soldiers,” the Lt General said.

• Moreover, over 100 oxygen concentrators will be provided to the Central government for distribution to various government hospitals across states.
• “The entire community relief program will be rolled out across the country with a special focus on five states — Maharashtra, Punjab, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana” the foundation.
• As part of the initiative, extensive awareness drives will also be organised across various states to promote vaccination amongst the population at large.
• These sessions will be conducted in partnership with NGOs, including SEEDS along with the local government authorities
