  • Though Children’s Day is celebrated on different dates in different countries, International Children’s Day is a global observance that is marked on November 20.

World Children’s Day 2021: History

  • The UN General Assembly, on December 14, 1954, had asked all the countries to observe the Universal Children’s Day as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children.
  • It also urged other countries to observe the day and promote the efforts of the UN for the welfare of the children.
  • General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989 on November 20 and hence World Children’s Day is celebrated on this day.

World Children’s Day 2021: Theme

  • The theme this year by UNICEF is to help children to recover from interruptions and learning losses experienced through the pandemic in the last two years.

World Heritage Week:

  • World Heritage Week is celebrated every year from November 19 to 25.
  • At present, 3,691 monuments across India are protected by the ASI, with the highest number, 745, in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Among these 143 sites and monuments are ticketed.

  • After a successful Paralympic debut this September, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced Para-badminton will have a total of 16 medal events at Paris 2024, two more than at Tokyo 2020.
  • The introduction of women’s singles SL3, women’s singles SH6, and mixed doubles SH6 for the first time will see an equal number of singles events for men and women, and equal athlete representation with 60 players across each gender.
  • Women’s doubles SL3-SU5 drops from the programme.
  • The change is in keeping with the IPC’s quest to increase the number of competition opportunities for women and athletes with high support needs.

  • BWF President Poul-Erik Hoyer said this was a positive step for the growth of Para badminton moving forward
  • The IPC announced a raft of quota changes for the next Paralympic Games following lengthy consultations with International Federations.
  • In total, the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will feature a maximum of 4,400 Para athletes who will compete in 549 medal events across 22 Para sports.
  • The Games will include a record 235 medal events for women, eight more than at Tokyo 2020.
  • This number also represents a 28 per cent increase on the 183 medal events for female athletes at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games.
  • In addition to more medal events, there will be at least 1,859 slots for female athletes, 77 more than Tokyo 2020.
  • This record number is almost double the 990 women that took part at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games.
  • The overall number of participating females at Paris 2024 could increase further as there are 339 gender-free slots for the Games.
  • Badminton has two gender-free events with SL3-SU5 mixed doubles and SH6 mixed doubles.

  • The President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind today felicitated the awardees of the cleanest cities of India at the ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’ hosted as part of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 by Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.
  • The award ceremony, organized to recognize the good work done for Swachhata by towns/ cities, States and Union Territories under various initiatives of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), viz. Swachh Survekshan 2021, Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge, and certifications for Garbage Free Star rating for cities – saw more than 300 awards under various categories being given away through the day.
  • For the fifth consecutive year, Indore was awarded the title of India’s Cleanest City under Swachh Survekshan
  • In the category of ‘Fastest Mover’, Hoshangabad (Madhya Pradesh) emerged as the ‘Fastest Mover City’ (in the ‘more than 1 lakh population’ category) with a jump of 274 ranks from 361st position in the 2020 rankings to the 87th position this year, thus securing a place among the top 100 cities.
  • Karnataka and Mizoram became the ‘Fastest Mover States’ in the big (more than 100 ULBs) and small (less than 100 ULBs) state category respectively.

5. ‘Boita Bandana’ festival celebrated in which state?

  • People congregated in large numbers at sea beaches, river ghats and near other water bodies to float miniature boats on the occasion of ‘Boita Bandana’ festival in Odisha despite the restrictions imposed by the state government on mass gatherings at public places to prevent transmission of COVID-19.
  • On this day, small boats made of the banana stem are floated by people to commemorate the rich maritime glory of the state.
  • Kalinga’s sea-facing regions had major trading ports for which ‘boitas’ (boats) were used. Ancient ‘sadhabas’ (mariner merchants) sailed from Kalinga to distant lands for trade.
  • Though the administration had imposed restrictions to curb gatherings near water bodies, people were seen thronging waterbodies before sunrise for the boat-sailing ritual.

  • In a first in the northeast region, the Meghalaya government has signed an MoU with the United Nations World Food Programme to streamline and strengthen the public distribution system in the state, an official said.
  • The partnership will help the WFP authorities and the state government work together towards Sustainable Development Goal two – Zero Hunger.
  • The MoU was signed at a programme organised by the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumers Affairs Department as part of the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava”.
  • The agreement was signed here between state Food and Civil Supplies Secretary Dr P Shakil Ahammed and Eric Kenefick, Deputy Country Director, WFP in India.
  • As part of the partnership, the WFP and the department will undertake supply chain optimisation of the entire targeted public distribution system in the state, and introduce innovative solutions and technologies, the official said.
  • The government also signed another agreement with Common Service Centre to improve the PDS system, he said.
  • Food and Civil Supplies Minister James PK Sangma, who was present at the event, termed the MoUs as a “landmark achievement” which will go a long way for food security in the state.
  • Meghalaya is the first state in the northeast region to have entered into an agreement with the UN-World Food Programme for strengthening the supply chain management, creating an automatic system and ensuring transparency, Ahammed said.
  • The minister also said the state government had recently initiated the formation of Commission for Consumer Dispute and Grievances Redressal that will help people resolve social issues, especially with their entitled benefits from the state.
  • In line with the Digital India Mission, the Food and Civil Supplies Department had implemented the FPS Automated Project by installing electronic point of sale devices in over 4,500 fair price shops across the state and this has helped bring transparency and efficiency to the PDS system and enhanced food security, the official said.
  • Ahammed said India has the largest food security system in the world, which proved its efficacy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • More than 79 per cent of households, particularly in rural areas, depend on fair price shops, he said.

  • The light combat helicopter handed over by the prime minister to Chief of Air Staff Air Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari has been designed and developed by state-run aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Limited,.
  • The LCH, a twin-engine helicopter in the 5.8-tonne class, has advanced technologies and stealth features for effective combat roles.
  • The chopper is designed to carry out multiple roles such as destruction of enemy air defence, counter-insurgency, search and rescue and anti-tank operations etc.
  • Post-1999 Kargil war, the need to have an effective combat helicopter to deliver precision strikes at high altitudes was felt by the IAF.
  • The design and development of LCH were sanctioned by the government in October 2006.
  • The prime minister also handed over drones, designed and developed by Indian startups, to the Indian Army.
  • The Indian Army has decided to procure these drones after detailed testing and trials.
  • The electronic warfare systems were designed by the DRDO and manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
  • They have been manufactured for naval ships including that for Indian Aircraft Carrier Vikrant.
  • The prime minister also launched kiosks for paying tributes to the fallen heroes at National War Memorial (NMW).
  • The kiosks have been installed at the National War Memorial (NWM) to encourage visitors to register their presence and pay virtual homage to the fallen heroes.

  • Rural Development Ministry said the total release made to the States and UTs in Financial Year 2021-22 under the PMAY-G scheme is over seven thousand seven hundred 75 crore rupees.
  • Apart from focusing on providing houses to the eligible beneficiaries, PMAY-G also addresses the basic needs of households through convergence with other government schemes.
  • The beneficiary is entitled to 90 to 95 person-days of unskilled labour from MGNREGS.
  • The assistance for the construction of the toilet shall be leveraged through convergence with Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin.
  • Convergence for piped drinking water, electricity connection, LPG gas connection, etc. under different Government programmes is also an inherent thematic component.
