  • The country’s foreign exchange reserves declined by $28.05 billion to $607.31 billion at the end of March this year from $635.36 billion at the end of September 2021, according to an RBI report.
  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) publishes half-yearly reports on management of foreign exchange reserves as part of its efforts towards enhanced transparency and levels of disclosure.
  • These reports are prepared every six months with reference to the position as on March and September-end each year.
  • The present report, which is the 38th in the series, is with reference to the position as at end-March 2022.
  • During the half-year period under review, reserves decreased from $635.36 billion as at end September 2021 to $607.31 billion as at end-March 2022.
  • Although both the U.S. dollar and the Euro are intervention currencies and the Foreign Currency Assets (FCA) are maintained in major currencies, the foreign exchange reserves are denominated and expressed in U.S. dollar terms.
  • The net forward asset (receivable) of RBI in the domestic foreign exchange market stood at $65.79 billion at the end of March 2022.
  • At the end of December 2021, foreign exchange reserves’ cover of imports (on balance of payments basis) declined to 13.1 months from 14.6 months at end-September 2021.
  • As of end-March 2022, the RBI held 760.42 metric tonnesof gold (including gold deposits of 11.08 metric tonnes).
  • While 453.52 metric tonnes of gold is held overseas in safe custody with the Bank of England and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), 295.82 metric tonnes of gold is held domestically.
  • In value terms, the share of gold in the total foreign exchange reserves increased from about 5.88% as at end-September 2021 to about 7.01% as at end-March 2022, it said.
  • Of the total FCA of $540.72 billion in March, $363.03 billion was invested in securities, $140.54 billion was deposited with other central banks and the BIS, and the balance $37.16 billion comprised deposits with commercial banks overseas.

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to build an identical pair of satellites for studying the earth’s upper atmosphere, according to officials from the space agency.
  • The twin satellites named DISHA (Disturbed and quiet time Ionosphere-thermosphere System at High Altitudes) will be launched in the low earth orbit — about 500 kilometres above earth — to study the physics and chemistry of the upper atmosphere, said Shantanu Bhatawdekar, scientific secretary of the ISRO.
  • The two satellites will carry identical payloads.
  • DISHA – H will be placed at a higher inclination to the equator DISHA – H while DISHA – L will remain at a lower inclination, Bhatawdekar elaborated.
  • The data generated by the proposed ISRO’s solar mission Aditya L1 and by DISHA satellites would help to understand the Sun-Earth linkages.

14. Odisha Govt extended ‘Mission Shakti’ scheme for how many years?

  • Odisha state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has approved a proposal to extend ‘Mission Shakti’ scheme for another five years from FY 2022-23 to FY 2026-27.
  • The cabinet has also approved an allocation of Rs 4973.39 crore for the implementation of the scheme.
  • At present, about 70 lakh women are engaged in more than 6.02 lakh Self Help Groups in the state.
  • The government has set some targets for the next five years under the ‘Mission Shakti’ scheme which includes Rs 50,000 crore bank credit to SHGs over five years, the Interest subvention of more than Rs 1,200 crore to SHGs during this period.
  • Under the scheme, more than 500 Mission Shakti Bazaars and outlets will be set up across the state.
  • It seeks to give a major push to e-commerce of SHG products.
  • Around 35 to 40 lakh SHG members to be trained under livelihood initiatives and capacity building programmes, government business of more than Rs 6,600 crore to be provided to Mission Shakti SHGs and their federation in convergence with different government departments.
  • Dedicated to the accelerated growth in socio-economic empowerment of the women-led self-help groups, this decision will further strengthen the Silent Revolution of Mission Shakti across rural and urban areas of the state.

15. Govt released breed-wise report of livestock, poultry Indigenous and non-descript cattle compromise how many percent?

  • Indigenous and non-descript cattle compromise 73 per cent of the total cattle population of 19.35 crore whereas the exotic and crossbred animals constitute more than 26 per cent.
  • But with regards to the fowl population, desi fowl forms just 36 per cent of the lot while improved species constitute 64 per cent of the total fowl population of 80.78 crore.
  • These findings are part of breed-wise data collected during 20th Livestock Census of 2018-19.
  • The report was released by Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, ParshottamRupala.
  • The uniqueness of this Census was that for the first time the country went with adopting tablet computers for the data collection exercise and both livestock and poultry birds were counted according to their breeds as recognized by National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR).
  • The report has covered 184 recognized indigenous/exotic and crossbred breeds of 19 selected species that are registered by the NBAGR.
  • There are four exotic/crossbred breeds of cattle and 41 recognized indigenous breeds covered in this report.
  • As per the Census, 36.04 per cent of the livestock population belong to cattle.
  • Crossbred Jersey has the highest share with 49.3 per cent against 39.3 per cent of Crossbred Holstein Friesian (HF) in total exotic/crossbred cattle.
  • Gir, Lakhimi and Sahiwal breeds have major contribution in total indigenous cattle population of 14.21 crore.
  • In buffalo, the Murrah breed majorly contributes with 42.8 per cent which is commonly found in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
  • With regards sheep, there are 3 exotics and 26 indigenous breeds found in the country.
  • Among the pure exotic breeds, Corriedale breed majorly contributes with 17.3 per cent share and in the indigenous breeds the Nellore breed contribute the highest in the category with 20 per cent share.
  • In goats, there are 28 indigenous breeds—Black Bengal breed contributes the highest with 18.6 per cent.
  • In pigs, crossbred species contribute 86.6 per cent whereas Yorkshire contributes 8.4 per cent and indigenous pigs 3.9 per cent.
  • In desi fowl, Aseel breed majorly contribute in both backyard poultry and commercial poultry farm.
