  • Credit card spending has crossed Rs 1.13 lakh crore in May compared to Rs 1.05 lakh crore in the previous month according to official data.
  • The latest data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) showed that 7.68 crore credit card holders spent about Rs 71,429 crore for buying online, while the amount was spent through swipes at Point of Sale (PoS) machines stood at Rs 42,266 crore in May.
  • In terms of the number of transactions, credit card payments were marginally lower online at 11.5 crores against 12.2 crores offline or at PoS machines.
  • Credit card holders spent Rs 65,652 crore for buying online, while the amount spent through Point of Sale (PoS) machines was Rs 39,806 crore in April.
  • As far as the debit card is concerned, the spending through PoS and online together was Rs 65,957 crore during the month.
  • The spending through PoS was Rs 44,305 crore against e-commerce spending of Rs 21,104 crore through the debit card in May.
  • During the month, there has been an addition of about 20 lakh credit cards.
  • The number of the card was 7.51 crore in April.
  • HDFC Bank had the highest number of credit cards at 1.72 crores in May as the RBI lifted the ban on the issuance of new credit cards in March.
  • In terms of credit cards, HDFC Bank was followed by the State Bank of India (1.41 crore) and ICICI Bank (1.33 crore) at the end of May 2022.

  • The Indian Armed Forces have initiated a fresh process to buy over 4,800 sniper rifles at a cost of more than Rs 450 crore after the defence procurement board last month accorded the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the procurement.
  • In a Request for Information (RFI) published, the Army said that around 4,800 .338 sniper rifles with telescopic sight will be procured under the “Buy Indian” category along with 78 lakh rounds of ammunition.
  • As per defence sources, around 4,500 sniper rifles will go to the Army, over 200 to the Indian Air Force and the rest to the Navy.
  • As per the RFI, the new sniper rifles will use the .338 Lapua Magnum ammunition and will have a range of 1,200 metres or more.

  • Carrying forward the spirit of ‘AzadikaAmritMahotsava’, a defining step to curb pollution caused by littered and unmanaged plastic waste is being taken by the country.
  • India will ban manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of identified single use plastic items, which have low utility and high littering potential, all across the country from July 1, 2022.
  • In the 4th United Nations Environment Assembly held in 2019, India had piloted a resolution on addressing single-use plastic products pollution, recognizing the urgent need for the global community to focus on this very important issue.
  • In the recently concluded 5th session of United Nations Environment Assembly in March 2022, India engaged constructively with all member states to develop consensus on the resolution for driving global action on plastic pollution.
  • The list of banned items includes –ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice- cream sticks, polystyrene (Thermocol) for decoration, plastic plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron, stirrers.
  • The Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, also prohibit manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of plastic carry bags having thickness less than seventy five microns with effect from 30th September, 2021, and having thickness less than thickness of one hundred and twenty microns with effect from the 31st December, 2022.
  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has also notified the Guidelines on Extended Producers Responsibility on plastic packaging as Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2022 on 16th February, 2022.
  • Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is responsibility of a producer for the environmentally sound management of the product until the end of its life.

  • The electronics and IT ministry has approved a total of 314 applications with proposed investments of Rs 86,824 crore under a modified special incentive package scheme till May 31, 2022.
  • The proposals that were approved in May included an investment of Rs 596 crore from Bosch Automotive Electronics Private Limited.
  • M-SIPS (Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme) was announced by the government in July 2012.
  • It has been amended twice –- in August, 2015 and in January, 2017, and mainly provides a capex subsidy of 20-25 per cent.
  • The application window for M-SIPS was closed on December 31, 2018.
  • As on May 31, 2022, incentives of Rs 1,774.47 crore have been disbursed to 114 applicants.
  • M-SIPS was the first scheme under which the government wooed electronics manufacturing companies.
  • Samsung, LG, Bosch, Tejas Networks, Motherson Sumi Systems, Tata Power SED, Nidec India, Nippon Audiotronix, Continental Automotive, GE BE and Wipro GE healthcare were the initial applicants for the scheme.
  • The government has now come up with the production-linked incentive schemes in an attempt to woo global mobile device makers.
  • In October 2020, it cleared 16 proposals from domestic and international companies entailing investment of Rs 11,000 crore under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to manufacture mobile phones worth Rs 10.5 lakh crore over the next five years.
  • The companies include iPhone maker Apple’s contract manufacturers Foxconn Hon Hai, Wistron and Pegatron, apart from Samsung and Rising Star.
  • Domestic companies whose proposals have been approved include Lava, Bhagwati (Micromax), Padget Electronics (Dixon Technologies), UTL Neolyncs and Optiemus.
