  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced a $305 million project which will support the strengthening and expansion of electricity in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
  • The Power Sector Development Project is supported by loans and grants from ADB and the governments of Australia and PNG and will target five subprojects within the main power grids of the country’s power utility, PNG Power Limited (PPL).
  • ADB provided two loans amounting to $208.6 million, the Government of Australia contributed a $59.5 million loan and a $12.8 million grant, and the Government of PNG with PPL will yield $24.1 million.
  • The limited electricity access in PNG stifles economic growth and exacerbates poverty and inequality in both urban and rural areas.
  • COVID-19 has also impacted the local economy, and quality infrastructure is a central component of the government’s post-pandemic economic recovery strategy.
  • The stable power grids proposed under the project will help maintain urban health facilities’ basic operations and are critical to reducing COVID-19 risks.

  • Fujian is the name of China’s eastern coastal province of Fujian.
  • The launch of the ship was delayed by two months due to the COVID lockdown of Shanghai.
  • It was due to be launched on April 23 around the 73rd anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). China’s first aircraft carrier.
  • The ‘Liaoning’, was a refit of the Soviet-era ship commissioned in 2012 followed by the indigenously built 2nd aircraft carrier ‘Shandong’ in 2019.
  • Liaoning and Shandong are names of two provinces of China.
  • China plans to have around five aircraft carriers. The next aircraft carrier China plans to build is expected to be nuclear-powered.
  • The Type 003 warship with a hull number of 18, is the first carrier in China’s fleet to use an electromagnetic catapult to launch planes from the deck, which is faster than the older steam catapult system.
  • Xu Qiliang, a member of the Political Bureau of the ruling Communist Party of China Central Committee and vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, attended the launch ceremony.

  • The main objectives of the Technology Transfer Facility (TTF) are to coordinate, facilitate and strengthen cooperation in technology transfer among the BIMSTEC member states by promoting the transfer of technologies, sharing of experiences and capacity building.
  • The statement said the centre shall facilitate transfer of technologies among the BIMSTEC member states, amongst other things, in priority areas, including biotechnology, nanotechnology, information and communication technology, space technology applications, agricultural technology, food processing technology, pharmaceutical technology automation and new and renewable energy technology automation.

  • Scientists have discovered a new species of bamboo-dwelling bat in Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya.
  • The species, found near the forested patch of Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary, has been named Glischropus meghalayanus.
  • The present discovery is the first report of a thick-thumbed bat not only from India but also from South Asia.
  • Two recently collected Glischropus specimens from Meghalaya State in northeastern India extend the known distribution range of the genus westward into South Asia by ca. (approximately) 1,000 km.
  • Morphological examination of these specimens and comparison with all known species in this genus revealed marked differences in colouration, dental characters and bacular traits.
  • The newly discovered species is small in size and has a dark brown colour with sulphur yellow belly.

  • The new technology will help to ensure round-the-clock energy generation and harness maximum energy through wind power systems in the Mumbai airport.
  • A Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), this sustainable initiative undertaken by the airport aims in reducing dependence on conventional electricity which propels its journey towards ‘net zero’ emissions.
  • To assist in enhancing capacity usage of green energy, CSMIA has deployed a 10Kwp hybrid solar mill consisting of 2 Kwp turbo mill (3 Savonius type VAWT) and 8 Kwp solar PV modules, with an estimated minimum energy generation of 36 Kwh/day.
  • It is estimated that the VAWT technology will generate around 13,140 Kwh/annum for 25 years, and will increase renewable energy in the existing energy mix and can reduce carbon emission to about 2,59,515 KgCo2e (kilogram of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilogram).

  • The Union Cabinet approved the Agnipath recruitment scheme which provides an opportunity for Indian youth to serve in the regular cadre of the Armed Forces for a period of four years.
  • Under the scheme, over forty six thousand youth will be recruited this year.
  • The Agnipath Scheme has been designed to enable a youthful profile of the Armed Forces.
  • It will be an unique opportunity for the youth to serve the country and contribute to Nation Building.
