  • After declining for three months, retail inflation rose to 7 per cent in August due to higher food prices which may prompt the Reserve Bank of India to go for another rate hike later this month to tame price rise.
  • The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation, which is factored in by RBI while deciding the monetary policy, has remained above the central bank’s comfort level of 6 per cent for eight months in a row.
  • CPI inflation was 6.71 per cent in July and 5.3 per cent in August 2021.
  • As per the data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), the inflation in food basket was 7.62 per cent in August, up from 6.69 per cent in July and 3.11 per cent in August 2021.
  • On an annual basis, the rate of price rise was in excess of 10 per cent in the case of vegetables, spices, footwear, and ‘fuel and light’.
  • However, there was contraction in inflation in egg and almost flat in protein rich ‘meat and fish’ in August.
  • Inflation had touched a high of 7.79 per cent in April before declining to 7.04 per cent in May.
  • It touched 7.01 per cent in June and further decelerated to 6.71 per cent in July.
  • The government has tasked RBI to ensure CPI inflation remains at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on each side.
  • The RBI Governor-headed Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is scheduled to be held from September 28 to 30.

  • India will assume the Presidency of the G20 for one year from December 1, 2022, to 30 November 2023.
  • The G20 Leaders’ Summit at the level of Heads of State/Government is scheduled to be held on September 9 and 10, 2023 in New Delhi,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
  • The G20 or Group of 20 is an intergovernmental forum of the world’s major developed and developing economies.
  • It comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US, and the European Union (EU).
  • Collectively, the G20 accounts for 85 percent of the global GDP, 75 percent of international trade, and two-thirds of the world population, making it the premier forum for international economic cooperation.
  • India is currently part of the G20 Troika (current, previous, and incoming G20 Presidencies) comprising Indonesia, Italy, and India.
  • During India’s Presidency, India, Indonesia, and Brazil would form the troika.
  • This would be the first time when the troika would consist of three developing countries and emerging economies, providing them a greater voice, the MEA said.
  • In addition to G20 members, there has been a tradition of the G20 Presidency inviting some guest countries and international organizations to its G20 meetings and summit.
  • Accordingly, in addition to regular international organizations like the UN, IMF, World Bank, World Health Organization and World Trade Organization, and International Labour Organization among others, India, as G20 Presidency, will be inviting Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain, and the UAE as guest countries.

  • As per National Health Accounts Estimates India 2018-19, the per capita government spending in 2013-14 was one thousand forty-two rupees, which has increased to one thousand eight hundred and fifteen rupees.
  • It said, government’s share in the overall spending on health in the country is increasing steadily.
  • The government’s share in current health expenditure has increased from 23.2 per cent in 2013-14 to 34.5 per cent in 2018-19.
  • The government spending on primary healthcare has increased since 2013-14.
  • The government health expenditure during that period on primary healthcare was around 51 per cent, which has increased to over 55 per cent in 2018-19.
  • The per capita Out-of-pocket expenditure in the country has also decreased by eight per cent since 2013-14.
