  • The wholesale price-based inflation remained in the negative territory for the fourth straight month in July at (-)1.36 per cent on easing prices of fuel, even though food articles turned costlier.
  • The wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation rate has been in the negative since April and was (-)4.12 per cent in June. In July last year, it was 14.07 per cent.
  • Inflation in food articles skyrocketed 14.25 per cent in July against 1.32 per cent in June.
  • Fuel and power basket inflation eased to (-)12.79 per cent in July from (-)12.63 per cent in June.
  • In manufactured products, the inflation rate was (-)2.51 per cent as against (-)2.71 per cent in June.
  • The RBI raised its inflation forecast for FY24 to 5.4 per cent from 5.1 per cent earlier, citing pressures from food prices.
  • India’s consumer price index (CPI)-based inflation rose sharply to 7.44 per cent in July, according to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
  • This is considerably higher than 4.87 per cent in June.
  • In July last year, the CPI inflation was at 6.71 per cent
  • This is the highest retail inflation since April 2022 when it was recorded at 7.79 per cent.

  • The new OS is currently being rolled out only in the Defence Ministry computers, and not the three Services.
  • Maya has been developed by Indian government agencies within six months, and it is aimed at preventing malware attacks by cybercriminals who are increasingly targeting critical infrastructure and government agencies.
  • The new OS will be backed by a protection system called Chakravyuh. This end point system is also being deployed in the computers that have Maya installed.
  • Windows is a commercial software sold by Microsoft for a license fee. It is the most widely used OS, and it is easy to install and run. Devices powered by Microsoft’s OS run on the Windows NT kernel. A kernel is the core of an operating system. It runs on a computer’s Random Access Memory (RAM) and gives the device instructions on how to perform specific tasks.
  • Maya OS is not the first locally developed operating system — Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS) is an existing Linux-based operating system that has been in development for over 16 years and previously tested by the Army.
  • This indigenous OS was developed by Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and the National Resource Centre for Free and Open Source Software (NRCFOSS). The latest version, BOSS 9.0 — codenamed Urja — was released on February 19, 2021.
