  • This day is observed in the memory of the first summit of Mount Everest by New Zealand’s Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay Sherpa that took place on 29th of May 1953.
  • History was created on this day 68 years ago when both of them climbed Mount Everest, 29,029 feet above sea level.
  • They were the first humans to scale the height of Mount Everest.
  • To commemorate their achievement, in the year 2008, Nepal decided to celebrate International Everest Day every year on 29th of May.
  • They were part of a British expedition.
  • Mr Norgay and Mr Hillary reached the summit of Mount Everest at 11.30 A.M. on 29th May,1953, but the world came to know of their achievement only on 2nd of June, the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation.
  • The day was observed for the first time in 2008, the year Edmund Hillary died.

Cricket-IPL to be completed in UAE later this year – BCCI:

  • The remaining matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which was suspended earlier this month, will be completed in the United Arab Emirates in September and October, the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI).
  • The BCCI said in a statement that they had asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) for more time to make a call on whether India would be able to host the Twenty20 World Cup in October and November.
  • The popular IPL Twenty20 tournament was suspended with 31 matches left to play on May 4 after several players and backroom staff tested positive for the new coronavirus amid a devastating second wave of COVID-19 in India.

  • The penalty has been slapped after examining a complaint by a whistleblower regarding irregularities in the auto loan portfolio of the lender.
  • The order imposing the fine was issued on May 27.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said it has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 10 crore on HDFC Bank for contraventions of certain provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
  • The apex bank said an examination of documents in the matter of marketing and sale of third-party non-financial products to the bank’s customers, arising from a whistleblower complaint to it regarding irregularities in the auto loan portfolio of the bank, revealed contravention of the provisions of the Act and the regulatory directions.

  • ‘Nammude Kozhikode’ is an application that takes the services of various -government departments directly to the public. It was of great use for many during the lockdown.
    The application also provides information regarding the welfare schemes of the government.
  • ‘Nammude Kozhikode’ was made envisaging the participation of the citizens through information technology in every stage of administration from planning to implementation.

  • A 60-mg tablet, which can be priced at about ₹200, ensures slow and sustained release of the drug. It also ensures reduced nephrotoxicity (adverse impact of medicines and chemicals on the kidney).
  • A technology developed to treat Kala Azar can be quickly repurposed to treat patients of black fungus in an affordable and convenient way.
  • “In 2019, Saptarshi Majumdar and Chandra Shekhar Sharma from the institute’s Department of Chemical Engineering made a proven study on oral nanofibrous AMB (Amphotericin B) to treat Kala Azar,” an IIT-H spokesperson said.

  • We have already developed a prototype of the kit and its trial for proper validation is now under way at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow.

  • Under the national computing innovation strategy, South Korea targets to have the world’s fifth-largest amount of computing power, secure 24 industry leading computing technologies and create 10 new service areas by 2030.
  • The ministry said it first plans to replace the fifth-generation Nurion national supercomputer, now the world’s 21st-fastest, with the sixth-generation mainframe by 2023 and with the seventh-generation system by 2028, reports Yonhap news agency.

  • With this, France has become the first non-founding country to join the SKA consortium.
  • The founding member-nations are Australia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal and China.
  • Headquartered in the United Kingdom, SKAO is an array of antennas that will be built across Australia and South Africa with the scientific goal of studying the evolution of galaxies, fundamental physics in extreme environments and the origins of life.
  • France had participated in 11 engineering designing projects of the SKA telescope and had made contributions for development of dishes, low-frequency antennas, receivers and signal processing.
  • This work was mainly performed under the Maison SKA-France consortium, which includes research organisations and universities led by the French National Centre for Scientific Research or CNRS.
  • Some of the other participating countries are Canada, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

  • Jammu and Kashmir has become the first Union Territory to provide relief to COVID affected; Saksham to provide special pension and scholarship to COVID victims’ families.
  • The Administrative Council (AC), under the chairmanship of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha approved the grant of financial relief through Special Assistance Scheme for COVID Mortalities (SASCM/Saksham) to the families of COVID victims.
  • AIR correspondent reports that the scheme aims to ensure sustenance of families who have lost their sole breadwinner.
  • Under the new scheme, Saksham, the surviving spouse and one eldest surviving member of the affected families will receive a special monthly pension of Rs. 1,000 through DBT, provided that they are not otherwise receiving any pension under other schemes.
  • Additionally, the scheme will also provide special scholarships to children who lost their earning parent(s)/sibling(s)/guardian(s) to COVID.
  • The special scholarship will be paid annually at the rate of Rs. 20,000 through DBT to children studying up to 12th standard and Rs. 40,000 for higher education.
  • The Administrative Council also approved creation of a Special Cell in the Social Welfare Department for handholding the families of COVID victims and facilitating the extension of benefits under different Government schemes including financial assistance for self-employment.

  • An inter-ministerial team will visit the areas impacted by the cyclone Yaas to assess the full extent of the damage.
  • During the review meetings in the two states, the Prime Minister was informed that Odisha has been the worst affected by the cyclone Yaas while West Bengal and Jharkhand have also suffered damages.
  • Of the relief package announced by the Prime Minister, ₹500 crore will be disbursed to Odisha immediately while West Bengal and Jharkhand will get their share from the remaining ₹500 crore after assessment of the damage by the inter-ministerial team to be sent by the Centre.

  • In a major relief announcement extending much needed support for the children who have lost their parents due to COVID-19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved slew of measures under PM-CARES for Children scheme, including free education and an amount of Rs. 10 lakhs on attaining the age of 23, among others.
  • Under the PM-CARES for Children scheme contribution will be done through the PM CARES Fund till the age of 18 years to create a corpus of Rs. 10 lakh for each child orphaned due to COVID-19.
  • The beneficiary will be given a monthly stipend for five years from 18 years of age till he completes 23 years.
  • On attaining the age of 23, the full amount of Rs. 10 lakh will be transferred to the beneficiary for his professional or personal use.
  • Ensuring free education to such Kids, under this scheme, children under 10 years of age will be given admissions in Kendriya Vidyalayas and private schools whereas provision has been made for educating kids between 11 to 18 years of age in residential schools including Sainik Schools and Navodaya Vidyalayas.
  • Expenditure on uniform, text books and notebooks for beneficiary kids will be done through PMCARES Fund.
  • Students going for higher education will also be assisted to get education loans and scholarships.
  • All children beneficiaries will be enrolled under Ayushman Bharat Scheme with a health insurance cover of Rs. five lakh, the premium for which will be paid by the PM CARES Fund.

  • The commitment of the State to make provision of tap water supply in every rural home by 2023, in 2021-22, Rs. 5,116.79 Crore Central grant-in-aid has been allocated to Madhya Pradesh for the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission.
  • In 2019-20, Central Government allocated Rs. 571.60 Crore which was increased to Rs. 1,280.13 Crore in 2020-21.
  • Union Minister, Jal Shakti Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat during his meeting with the Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh at Bhopal has assured full funding for Jal Jeevan Mission to make provision of tap water supply to every rural home.
  • Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh assured that he will regularly review the planning and implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission and instead of completing the task in 2024 as announced by the Prime Minister, Madhya Pradesh government will ensure tap water connection and assured potable piped water supply to every rural home by 2023.
  • As a result, in 2020-21, despite Covid-19 pandemic, Madhya Pradesh performed exceptionally well and provided 19.89 Lakh rural households with new tap water connections.
  • With the allocation grant of Rs. 5,116.78 crores in 2021-22 and unspent balance of
    Rs. 191.61 Crore available with the State Government, and State’s matching share of Rs. 5,392.50 crore, which includes the total assured fund availability for the implementation of JJM in the State is about Rs. 10,700 crores.
