Anti Terrorism Day: History:

  • The official announcement of National Anti Terrorism Day was made after the assassination of India’s seventh Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on May 21, 1991.
  • He was killed in Tamil Nadu in a campaign by a terrorist.
  • Then, under the V.P. Singh government, the center has decided to observe 21st May as Anti Terrorism Day.
  • On this day Anti-Terrorism pledge is taken in all the government offices, public sector undertakings, and other public institutions, etc.

National Endangered Species Day 2021:

  • National Endangered Species Day falls on May 21 this year.
  • Annually celebrated on the third Friday of May, this is a global event that is aimed at the protection of the endangered species of our planet. 2021 marks the 16th National Endangered Species Day.
  • Established by the US Senate, the historic National Endangered Species Day came into being in 2006.
  • On December 28, the Endangered Species Act of 1973 was officially signed into law to facilitate the monumental effort of prevention of endangered species extinction.
  • It has been reported that there are around 16000 species (including algae, fungi) whose existence is at a critical juncture.
  • In India, according to the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, hunting of wild animals has been banned to eradicate the risk of endangered species extinction.

Origin and Purpose:

  • After a terrorist attack in 2001 and destruction of Buddha statue of Bamyan in Afghanistan, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) adopted this day as ‘Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity’.
  • In December 2002, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in its resolution 57/249 announced May 21 to be The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, recognizing the need to “enhance the potential of culture as a means of achieving prosperity, sustainable development and global peaceful co-existence.”

International Tea Day 2021:

  • The world will join hands to celebrate International Tea Day on May 21, 2021.
  • The day is observed primarily with a view to increasing consumption of tea.
  • The UN has said tea has medicinal value and has a potential of bringing health benefits to people.
  • In 2019, the United Nations (UN) recognised the importance of one of the world’s oldest beverages.
  • International Tea Day is celebrated by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

  • The FIFA Council also approved the tournament dates for the Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 from July 20 to August 20, 2023.
  • Meanwhile, the new play-off tournament for the Women’s World Cup 2023 will be held from 17 to 23 February 2023.

  • The DIPCOVAN kit was developed indigenously by the scientists, followed by extensive validation on more than 1,000 patient samples at various COVID designated hospitals in Delhi.
  • Three batches of the product were validated during last one year.
  • The antibody detection kit is approved by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in April 2021.
  • In May 2021, the product received the regulatory approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, to manufacture for sale and distribution.
  • DIPCOVAN is intended for the qualitative detection of IgG antibodies in human serum or plasma, targeting SARS-CoV-2 related antigens.
  • It offers a significantly faster turn-around-time as it requires just 75 minutes to conduct the test without any cross reactivity with other diseases.
  • The kit has a shelf life of 18 months.

Punjab govt announces Rs 1,500 per month for children orphaned in COVID pandemic:

  • The Punjab government decided to provide Rs 1,500 per month as social security pension and free education up to graduation to all those children orphaned in the COVID pandemic, as well as families that have lost their breadwinning member, beginning July 1.
  • Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said his government will ensure free education in government institutions for such children as well as kids belonging to families that have lost their breadwinner to COVID, affected persons would also be eligible for Rs 51,000 under the Ashirwad Scheme with effect from July 1 and would be entitled to free ration under the state smart ration card scheme and coverage under the ‘Sarbat Sehat Bima Yojana’.
  • Earlier under the Ashirwad Scheme, Rs 51,000 financial assistance was given to a poor family for the girl’s marriage, while there is an entitlement based cashless Health Insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year under the ‘Sarbat Sehat Bima Yojana’.
  • The state government would also assist the affected family members to find a suitable job under the ‘Ghar Ghar Rozgaar te Karobaar Mission’.
  • The relief measures will be provided to orphans until they attain the age of 21 years.

  • Hindustan Unilever Limited has rolled out Mission HO2PE in Assam.
  • As part of Mission HO2PE, HUL’s Doomdooma factory of Tinsukia district has donated two ventilators, three oxygen concentrators and face masks to the Additional Deputy Commissioner Tinsukia and subsequently to Civil Hospital Tinsukia to provide support for Covid-19 care.
  • Additionally, HUL factory site team is also supporting the neighbouring tea garden community by sanitizing line houses.
  • Through Mission HO2PE, HUL has airlifted over 5000 oxygen concentrators into India. Through Mission HO2PE, HUL will provide access to oxygen for COVID-19 patients.
  • ‘Mission HO2PE’ is also being rolled out in other severely affected cities such as
    New Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Chandigarh.
  • HUL will also be donating 1000 concentrators to hospitals in nearly 20 locations across India.
