  • Popularly known as the ‘Victor of Basantar’ for commanding the 54th Division in the battle as a Major General, Gen Pinto last served as the 8th General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command.
  • As Major General, he had led the 54th Infantry Division on the western front in the Indo-Pak War of 1971, for which he was awarded the prestigious Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM).

  • India and the US kicked off a two-day naval exercise in the eastern Indian Ocean Region, reflecting the growing congruence in their defence and military partnership.
  • The Indian Navy deployed its warship Shivalik and long-range maritime patrol aircraft P8I in the ‘PASSEX’ exercise while the US Navy was represented by the USS Theodore Rosevelt carrier strike group.
  • Besides the Indian Navy, the Malabar naval exercise was participated by the navies of the US, Australia and Japan.
  • The four countries are part of the Quad or Quadrilateral coalition.
  • In July last, the Indian Navy carried out a military exercise with a US Navy carrier strike group led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz off the coast of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • The USS Nimitz is the world’s largest warship.

  • A new passenger train connecting Dhaka and New Jalpaiguri on the Indian side was inaugurated jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina via a video conference.
  • This is the third passenger train after Maitree Express (Dhaka-Kolkata) and Bandhan Express (Khulna-Kolkata) running between the two neighbouring countries.
  • The train will run between Dhaka Cantonment and New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal via Chilahati, a border railway station in Bangladesh.
  • The distance between Dhaka and Chilahati is 453 km and from Chilahati to New Jalpaiguri is 71 km.
  • Last year, India and Bangladesh resumed operations on the Haldibari-Chilahati route for goods trains after a gap of over 55 years.
  • The four other rail links that connect the two countries are Petrapole-Benapole, Gede-Darshana, Singhabad-Rohanpur and Radhikapur-Birol.

Modi-Hasina summit: 5 MoUs; 7 development projects inaugurated:

  • India and Bangladesh signed five MoUs to enhance cooperation in disaster management, trade, IT and sports among other sectors.
  • The two leaders also inaugurated virtually seven development projects.
  • The MoUs are:
    – MoU on disaster management, resilience and mitigation;
    – MoU between Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC) and National Cadet Corps of India (INCC);
    – MoU on the Establishment of a Framework of Cooperation in the Area of Trade Remedial Measures between Bangladesh and India;
    – MoU on Supply of ICT equipment, courseware and reference books and training for Bangladesh-Bharot Digital Service & Employment and Training (BDSET) Center; and
    – MoU on Establishment of Sports facilities at Rajshahi College field and surrounding areas.
  • The projects inaugurated by Hasina and Modi include extended development work of Rabindra Bhawan Kuthibari at Shilaidaha in Kushtia and three border haats.
  • They also jointly laid the foundations stones for infrastructure development for power evacuation facilities of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant being built in collaboration with Russia.

  • The foundation of the Gorakhpur zoo was laid a decade ago in May 2011 but its construction gained momentum after the year 2017.
  • The work of bringing animals to the zoo began last month, and so far, 153 wild birds and animals of 31 species have arrived here.
  • Currently, visitors can see animals, such as lion, tiger, leopard, hippopotamus, deer, chital in the zoo.
  • The zoo also has a 7D theatre with state-of-the-art facilities where audience will experience 13 effects, such as rain, lightning, fog, smoke and fragrance.
