  • In the process, Root also surpassed former Pakistan captain Inzamam-Ul-Haq as the player with the highest individual score playing the 100th Test match of his career.
  • Inzamam had hit 184 against India in a Test match in Bengaluru in 2005, which Pakistan had won by 168 runs.
  • His record stood for 15 years before being broken by Root, who reached his double-century with a six off R Ashwin, the second time he hit the off-spinner over the ropes.

3. Elon Musk’s SpaceX wins contract to launch NASA’s astrophysics mission. What is the name of that Mission?

  • NASA has selected tech billionaire Elon Musk’s private aerospace company SpaceX to provide launch services for an astrophysics mission to survey the sky in the near-infrared light.
  • The planned two-year mission is called SPHEREx, short for Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer.
  • The near-infrared light, which, though not visible to the human eye, serves as a powerful tool for answering cosmic questions involving the birth of the universe, and the subsequent development of galaxies.
  • SPHEREx will also will search for water and organic molecules – essentials for life as we know it – in regions where stars are born from gas and dust, known as stellar nurseries, as well as disks around stars where new planets could be forming.
  • The mission currently is targeted to launch as early as June 2024 on a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex-4E at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
  • The total cost for NASA to launch SPHEREx is approximately $98.8 million, which includes the launch service and other mission related costs.

  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) has sanctioned
    Rs 30,200 crore and disbursed Rs 16,500 crore for various rural infrastructure projects across the country under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) in the first 10 months of the current financial year.
  • The RIDF, which was set up in 1995, is a dedicated fund to create social assets in rural India.
  • Since the inception of the fund, Nabard has disbursed Rs 3.11 lakh crore for different rural infrastructure projects
  • Over the years, the RIDF has become a dependable source of funding for states and union territories for building, strengthening rural infrastructure in critical areas like agriculture and irrigation, rural connectivity and social sector, including drinking water, primary health and education.
  • It could be noted that in the Union Budget 2021-22, Finance Minister
    Nirmala Sitharaman announced to enhance the allocation to the RIDF to
    Rs 40,000 crore from Rs 30,000 crore.
  • She also increased the corpus of the Micro Irrigation Fund by Rs 5,000 crore to Rs 10,000 crore.
  • The recapitalisation of Rs 2,000 crore to Nabard and that of Rs 1,200 crore to regional rural banks will help achieve the target of agriculture credit.

  • Minister also touched upon the Ministry’s road map to revive tourism activities post Covid by highlighting initiatives such as SAATHI (System for Assessment, Awareness & Training for Hospitality Industry) and the Incredible India Tourist Facilitator (IITF) Certification Programme, an Online learning platform with the objective of creating a pool of well trained and professional Tourist Facilitators across the country.
  • The meeting concluded with a Joint Media statement where the Ministers agreed to further enhance ASEAN-India cooperation in tourism under the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding between ASEAN and India.

  • Four more States namely, Assam, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab have undertaken “Ease of Doing Business” reforms stipulated by the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.
  • Thus, these State have become eligible to mobilise additional financial resources and have been granted permission to raise additional Rs.5,034 crore through Open Market Borrowings.
  • These four States are Assam, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
  • Thus, total number of State who has undertaken the stipulated reforms to facilitate ease of doing business has gone up to 12.
  • Earlier, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Telangana have also reported completion of this reform, which was confirmed by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
  • On completion of reforms facilitating ease of doing business, these twelve States have been granted additional borrowing permission of Rs.28,183 crore.
  • Till now, 17 States have carried out at least one of the four stipulated reforms and have been granted reform linked borrowing permissions.
  • Out of these, 12 States have implemented the one nation one ration card system, 12 States have done ease of doing business reforms, 5 States have done local body reforms and 2 States have undertaken power sector reforms.
  • Total reform linked additional borrowing permission issued so far to the States stands at Rs.74,773 crore.

12 States – Complete ease of doing business reforms; Get additional borrowing permission of Rs. 5,034 crore.
