  • Asian Paints announced Rs 2,100 crore of phased investment to set up a new plant to produce vinyl acetate ethylene emulsion (VAE) and vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) in the country.
  • The company also announced another Rs 550 crore of investment to set up a white cement plant in the UAE in partnership with two local firms there.
  • The board has approved setting up of a manufacturing facility for VAE and VAM in the country.
  • The company will invest around Rs 2,100 crore in the plant over the next three years, which includes the cost of land, the company informed the stock exchanges without giving other details like the location of the plant among others.
  • The proposed plant will have an installed capacity of 1 lakh tonne per annum for VAM and 1.5 lakh tonnes for VAE.
  • VAM is a key input for manufacturing VAE, which is considered to be the emulsion of the future and the key constituent for manufacturing environment-friendly paints.
  • VAE offers better paint properties and can improve paint performance.
  • Domestic manufacturing of VAM and VAE will give substantial sustainable cost efficiencies, substituting import dependency and will be used as captive plant.
  • The proposed plant is a key backward integration project for the company.

  • Besides, the fair trade regulator has directed the internet major to cease and desist from unfair business practices.
  • In a release, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) said it has also directed Google to modify its conduct within a defined timeline.
  • In April 2019, the regulator ordered a detailed probe in the matter following complaints by consumers of Android-based smartphones in the country.
  • Android is an open-source, mobile operating system installed by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) of smartphones and tablets.
  • The allegations of unfair business practices pertained to two agreements — Mobile Application Distribution Agreement (MADA) and Anti Fragmentation Agreement (AFA) — which were entered into by the OEMs of Android OS with Google.
  • The regulator has imposed a penalty of Rs 1,337.76 crore on Google for abusing its dominant position in multiple markets in the Android mobile device ecosystem apart from issuing the cease and desist order.

  • European aviation major Airbus received the regulatory approval from the Indian regulator for its C295 aircraft programme, becoming the first foreign original equipment maker to get such a nod.
  • In September last year, India sealed a nearly Rs 21,000 crore deal with Airbus Defence and Space to procure 56 C295 transport aircraft to replace the ageing Avro-748 planes of the IAF under a project that entails manufacturing of military aircraft in India for the first time by a private company.
  • The regulatory approval for the ambitious programme was accorded by Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA).
  • Under the agreement, Airbus will deliver the first 16 aircraft in ‘fly-away’ condition from its final assembly line in Seville, Spain within four years and the subsequent 40 aircraft will be manufactured and assembled by Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) in India as part of an industrial partnership between the two companies.

  • The proposed combination involves the acquisition of up to 10 per cent each of the total paid up share capital and voting rights of Yes Bank by CA Basque Investments and Verventa Holdings.
  • In July, Yes Bank announced raising of equity capital of Rs 8,900 crore from funds affiliated with two private equity investors — Carlyle and Advent International.
  • Deals beyond a certain threshold require approval from the regulator, which keeps a tab on unfair business practices in the market place.
