3. Frauds in PSBs dipped how many percent?

  • Public sector banks reported over a 51 percent dip in the amount involved in frauds to Rs 40,295.25 crore during the financial year ended March 2022.
  • The 12 PSBs (Public Sector Banks) had reported frauds worth Rs 81,921.54 crore in the preceding fiscal 2020-21, the Reserve Bank has said in response to an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
  • However, the number of fraud cases didn’t fall at the same pace as a total of 7,940 frauds reported by the PSBs in 2021-22, against 9,933 incidents reported in FY21, said the RBI’s reply to Madhya Pradesh-based RTI activist Chandrashekhar Gaur.
  • According to the RBI data on frauds reported by PSBs in all categories during FY22, the highest amount of Rs 9,528.95 crore was reported by the city-based Punjab National Bank (PNB), involving 431 such incidents.
  • The country’s largest lender State Bank of India reported frauds worth Rs 6,932.37 crore in as many as 4,192 cases reflecting incidents of a large number of small value frauds.
  • Bank of India reported frauds worth Rs 5,923.99 crore (209 incidents), followed by Bank of Baroda at Rs 3,989.36 crore (280); Union Bank of India Rs 3,939 crore (627), while Canara Bank reported frauds worth Rs 3,230.18 crore in just 90 cases — showing that the transactions were of high-value frauds.
  • Among others, Indian Bank customers faced frauds amounting to Rs 2,038.28 crore in 211 cases; Indian Overseas Bank Rs 1,733.80 crore (312); Bank of Maharashtra Rs 1,139.36 crore (72 cases); Central Bank of India Rs 773.37 crore; UCO Bank Rs 611.54 crore (114 crores) and Punjab & Sind Bank reported frauds of Rs 455.04 crore in as many as 159 incidents.

  • Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad under the administrative control of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), government of India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Navy.
  • Dr T Srinivasa Kumar, Director INCOIS and Commodore AA Abhyankar, Cmde (NOM), Directorate of Naval Oceanology and Meteorology, Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Navy).
  • Under this MoU, INCOIS through its state of the art International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOO) would provide the best possible training services and support to the School of Naval Oceanology & Meteorology in conduct of various courses related to Operational Oceanography.
  • ITCOO, the training arm of INCOIS was set up in 2013.
  • It was recognized as a Category 2 Centre (C2C) of UNESCO and has been designated as one of the Regional Training Centres (RTC) by the Ocean Teacher Global Academy (OTGA) of International Oceanographic Data Exchange (IODE).
  • ITCOO is aimed at promoting capacity development and optimization of scientific base, technology and information system for operational oceanography at regional, national and global scales.
  • On the other hand SNOM of the Indian Navy is the Centre of Excellence in Atmospheric Sciences recognised by Cochin University of Science and Technology.

  • The 12th meeting of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) health ministers has agreed that BRICS countries will launch an early warning system for large-scale pandemics.
  • Hosted by China virtually, the meeting was joined by more than 70 attendees including health ministers from BRICS countries and the deputy director-general of the World Health Organization.
  • During the meeting, representatives had in-depth discussions on a range of topics such as COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control, building new health systems and digital health, as per Xinhua News Agency.
  • Ma Xiaowei, head of China’s National Health Commission, introduced China’s counter-epidemic policies including the dynamic zero-COVID approach and talked about China’s efforts to maintain a balance between epidemic prevention and economic development.
  • A joint declaration was adopted at the meeting.
  • China is scheduled to host the BRICS summit in Xiamen in June this year.

  • The Indian Educational and Cultural Foundation will sign one MoU each with Lumbini Buddhist University and Tribhuvan University and three MoUs with Kathmandu University.
  • Lumbini Buddhist University and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Tribhuvan University Nepal and Center for Asian Studies (CNAS) and ICCR, Kathmandu University and ICCR, the KU and the Indian Institute of Technology in Chennai are scheduled to sign two other MoUs.
  • The visit to Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, on the auspicious occasion of Buddha Jayanti, would start with darshan at the sacred Maya Devi Temple.
  • The temple marks the site of the birth of Lord Buddha, which is established through the epigraphic evidence provided by the pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka commemorating his visit there about two millennia ago in 249 BC.
  • He would then visit the adjacent Lumbini Monastic Zone site and participate in the shilanyas ceremony (ground breaking) for the construction of a Center Buddhist Culture and Heritage.
  • The project is being developed and built by the India based International Buddhist Confederation and is located in the west monastic zone of Lumbini.
