  • Almost 77 percent of Karnataka is arid or semi-arid and is vulnerable to climate-change-related variable rainfall causing droughts and floods, and leading to groundwater depletion, and deteriorating water quality.
  • The Karnataka Sustainable Rural Water Supply Program will support the Government of Karnataka’s ambition to provide functioning tap water connections to every rural household in the state.
  • This will include the construction of the drinking water distribution network and the installation of water meters in rural households and will benefit around 10 million people across all 31 districts in the state.

  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) cleared the air about the recently introduced interchange charges, saying they are only applicable for the prepaid payment instruments (PPI) transactions and there is no charge to customers.
  • It also clarified that there will be no charges for the bank account to bank account-based UPI payments — normal UPI payments.
  • In a recent circular, the NPCI reportedly said that using prepaid payment instruments (PPIs) – gift cards, wallets, among others — for transactions through UPI will attract an interchange fee of up to 1.1 per cent starting April 1.
  • The charges will be levied if the transaction is more than Rs 2,000.
  • Every month, over eight billion transactions are processed for free for customers and merchants.
  • UPI has emerged as a preferred mode of digital payment by offering a free, fast, secure and seamless experience.

  • The Centre announced that it has increased the upper age limit by 5 years of ombudsman of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) to 70 years.
  • As per the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (Redressal of Subscriber Grievance) Regulations 2015, the upper age limit was 65 years.
  • The PFRDA has amended that regulation by replacing the upper age limit for Ombudsman from 65 to 70 years.
  • “These regulations may be called the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (Redressal of Subscriber Grievance) (Amendment) Regulations, 2023,”.
  • These shall come into force on the date of their publication in the official gazette.
  • The ombudsman, which is appointed by PFRDA receives, considers and facilitates resolution of complaints or grievances, which fall within the ambit of the regulations.
  • A person appointed as an Ombudsman holds office for a period of three years and would be eligible for reappointment for another two years.

  • The Ofek-13, manufactured by state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Ltd, is the latest in a series of locally produced satellites first put into orbit in 1988.

  • India is current chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
  • The in-person meet today is being attended by Russian security chief Nikolai Patrushev and it will provide another opportunity for NSA Doval to hold talks with the Russian top official.
  • The meeting between NSA Doval and Nikolai Patrushev comes more than a month after the two met in Russia during the fifth multilateral meeting of Secretaries of Security Councils/NSAs on Afghanistan, which was hosted by Russia.
  • NSA Doval had also met Russian President Vladimir Putin during the meeting.
  • SCO was proclaimed on June 15, 2001 in Shanghai (China), with six members – Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. In June 2017 in Astana, during a meeting of the Heads of State, India and Pakistan were given the status of full members.
  • Besides the eight full members, four countries — Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia — have an observer status with the SCO, while six countries — Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, Turkey and Sri Lanka — have a dialogue partner status.
    Iran is likely to be granted full members status.
