  • Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; Minister of State (Independent Charge) Earth Sciences; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh informed the Rajya Sabha that National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) have jointly manufactured an earth science satellite named, NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar).
  • In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Dr Jitendra Singh said, the mission objectives of the satellite are- Design, Develop and launch Dual Frequency (L and S band) Radar Imaging Satellite and to Explore newer applications areas using L & S Band microwave data especially in surface deformation studies, terrestrial biomass structure, natural resource mapping and monitoring and studies related to dynamics of ice-sheets, glaciers, forests, oil slick etc.
  • The Minister said, the satellite is configured with I-3K bus and the instrument identified for SAR is based on the innovative Sweep SAR technique configured in both L and S band in polarimetric configuration for wide swath and high resolution.

  • ”The government has given approval to 45 companies/JVs operating in defence sector with foreign OEMs,” he said responding to a query on the number of foreign companies who have shown interest in manufacturing defence equipment under foreign direct investment in the country.
  • The government has taken several policy initiatives in the past few years and brought reforms to encourage indigenous design, development and manufacture of defence equipment in the country, thereby reducing dependency on imports in coming years, he said.

  • The Government is organizing the “National Conference on Biomass 3P – Pellet to Power to Prosperity” in New Delhi.
  • The Conference is being hosted by National Mission on Use of Biomass in Thermal Power Plants (SAMARTH) in association of National Power Training Institute.
  • Union Power & NRE Minister Shri R. K. Singh will inaugurate the Conference, which will have participation from Government, Ministries, Regulatory bodies, Financial Institutions, Pellet manufacturers, Entrepreneurs, OEMs, Farmer organizations etc,.
  • The objective of the conference is to foster an enabling environment to boost co-firing of biomass pellets in Thermal Power Plants in India as well as to provide a common platform for all the stakeholders in the field to share their knowledge and experience.
  • National Mission on use of Biomass in Coal Based Thermal Power Plant (SAMARTH) has been created by Ministry of Power as a one-shot solution to multiple problems being faced in disposal of surplus biomass.
  • While conversion of Biomass into pellets and co-firing them in Thermal Power Plants would save the environment from harmful effects of stubble burning, it will also contribute to the reduction of country’s dependence on coal in electricity generation, contributing to the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and earning potential for farmers and small entrepreneurs.

  • Representatives from 5 Southern States and 3 UTs will be attending the Conference.
    The Union Home Minister will also oversee destruction of 9,298 Kilogram of seized drugs valued at 1,235 crore rupees, during the meeting.
  • During the meeting, due emphasis will be laid on aspects like, ways to curtail drug trafficking through maritime route, stringent Punitive action on drug traffickers resulting into zero tolerance, seamless coordination/cooperation between State and Central Drug Law Enforcement Agencies and Containment of spread of drug abuse through concerted awareness program.
  • The Government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has adopted a policy of zero tolerance against drugs to make a Drug-free India. Under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a target to destroy 75,000 kg narcotics was set during a 75-day campaign beginning 01st June, 2022, but under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, a total of 5,94,620 kilograms of seized drugs, valued at 8,409 crore rupees, has been destroyed so far, overachieving the target manifold.
  • Out of the total drugs destroyed, 1,29,363 kilograms of seized drugs valued at 3,138 crore rupees has been destroyed by NCB alone.

15. 1st G20 Trade and Investment Working Group (TIWG) Meeting in __________?
