1. Zero Discrimination Day 2022:

Discrimination has been prevalent in society as a glaring evil that highlights that underlying glitch in our understanding of humans.
As humans, we have disintegrated ourselves into various categories based on gender identity, race, class, sexual orientation, sex, occupation, income, disability, etc.
To battle against the mentality that sparks issues, cases of violence, or general violence, Zero Discrimination Day is observed every year on March 1.
The day was first launched by Michel Sidibe, director, UNAIDS, in December 2013.
The next year on March 1, 2014, Zero Discrimination Day was observed for the very first time.
UNAIDS led the way to cater to the people living with HIV/AIDS who face discrimination because of their ailment.
In India, this day backed the movement of the LGBTQIA+ community in India to repeal section 377 that criminalised homosexuality in the country.
The law was finally repealed in September 2018. However, such cases had emerged before as well, when March 1 was not a day but a platform for people from various communities to raise their voices against discrimination.

Theme:

This year, the theme for Zero Discrimination Day is ‘Remove Laws That Harm, Create Laws That Empower.’
The theme signifies the ardent need to fight and take action against the myriad discriminatory laws in multiple countries that result in people being treated differently.
While some laws harm the sanctity of human rights, some seem to cripple the fundamental freedom in society.
The official symbol representing Zero Discrimination Day is a butterfly that is widely shared on various social media platforms along with the movement that one is supporting.
Zero Discrimination Day fuels movements against laws that choose and make people culpable for simply who they are, where they are from, what they do, or who they love, and bring like-minded, indiscriminate mentalities together to trump discrimination.

2. International Women’s Week:

Celebrate International Women’s Week, the week of March 8th, during International Women’s Day.
According to the website Gender Champions, the week sprang from the day’s observance because there were so many events that it was difficult to attend them in one day.
It is a week of celebration, education, and awareness surrounding women’s and gender issues.
Women’s Week focuses on five pillars:

In 1908, the Socialist Party of America organized a day to protest women’s working conditions. The first all-women’s strike in New Hampshire 80 years before for an idea of how important these events were.
The first National Woman’s Day (singular “woman”) was made official in the United States on February 28, 1909.
Later, it was moved to March 8th and renamed International Women’s Day (plural form).
Then, in the 1980s, International Women’s Day expanded to include a full week of activities during the first week of March, including International Women’s Day.

3. BWF bans Russia, Belarus athletes following IOC recommendations:

Badminton’s world governing body (BWF) has cancelled all sanctioned tournaments in Russia and Belarus following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Badminton’s world governing body (BWF) excluded Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from international events following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The BWF had already cancelled all sanctioned tournaments in Russia and Belarus.
World governing body have agreed to strengthen its measures against the governments of Russia and Belarus by suspending athletes and officials representing these countries from participating at any BWF-sanctioned international tournaments until further notice.
Earlier, Badminton’s world governing body (BWF) has cancelled all sanctioned tournaments in Russia and Belarus on Monday following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Russian and Belarusian national flags must not be displayed and their national anthems not played at any BWF events.
No other badminton tournaments will be allocated to Russia or Belarus until further notice.
The governing body said it fully supported the International Olympic Committee urging sports federations to move or cancel sports events planned in Russia or Belarus.
The IOC made the decision “in order to protect the integrity of global sports competitions and for the safety of all the participants” and that the body was acting with a “heavy heart”.
The Russian Olympic Committee categorically disagreed with the IOC, saying the decision “contradicts both the regulatory documents of the IOC and the (Olympic) Charter”.

4. Saurabh Chaudhary wins gold in ISSF World Cup in Cairo:

Indian shooting ace Saurabh Chaudhary won the gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol event, opening the country’s account in the year’s first ISSF World Cup.
The Asian Games gold medallist shot 16 in the gold medal contest to finish ahead of Germany’s Michael Schwald.
The bronze in the event was bagged by Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Artem Chernousov of Russia, whose country’s flag was removed owing to its involvement in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
The 19-year Chaudhary , an Olympian who also has a Youth Olympic gold medal to his name, was third in the men’s 10m air pistol qualification stage with a total of 584 points, making it through to the elimination as one of the top eight shooters.
This was Chaudhary’s third individual ISSF World Cup gold and first in the new format, dominating Germany’s Schwald in the final.
Chernousov topped the 92-strong qualification field with 591 points.
In the first semi-final where the first of four athletes are eliminated after 10 shots and the second after 15, Chaudhary made it to the medal round along with Chernousov for company as both notched up 38 points to eliminate Robin Walter of Germany first and then Emis Vasermanis of Latvia.
In this round, the shooter with the highest single-shot score is awarded four points, while the others get three, two and one each respectively, as they move down the hierarchy.
Points are split in case of a tie.
This format continues till the medal round.
Schwald and Azerbaijan’s Ruslan Lunev were the other two shooters to make it to the medal round from the second semi-final.
In the medal round where the bronze winner is determined and the top two make it through to the gold medal match, Chaudhary topped the four-man field after 15 shots with a score of 42.5 points.
Schwald joined the Indian with 41.5 points while Chernousov had to be satisfied with bronze, finishing with 40.
Lunev finished fourth, bowing out after 10 shots with a score of 21.
In the final, the winner of a single shot is awarded two points and the first to 16 points wins. In case of a tie, each shooter gets a point.
Chaudhary needed just 11 single shots, including shots of 10.5, 10.8 and 10.6 in the last three of his four attempts to seal the deal in his favour.
Over 500 shooters from 60 nations are taking part in the Cairo World Cup which has 20 medal sets on offer.
The day also has the women’s 10m air pistol finals scheduled.
France, Italy and India currently atop the medals tally with one gold each.

Rookie para archer Pooja Jatyan scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a silver medal in an individual section of the Para World Championships.

6. India slips 3 spots to rank 120 on 17 SDG goals adopted as 2030 agenda:

India has slipped three spots from last year’s 117 to rank 120 on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted as a part of the 2030 agenda by 192 United Nations member states in 2015.
With the latest rankings, India is now behind all south Asian nations except Pakistan, which stands at 129. The south Asian countries ahead of India are Bhutan ranked 75, Sri Lanka 87, Nepal 96 and Bangladesh 109.
India’s overall Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) score was 66 out of 100.
According to the Centre for Science and Environment’s State of India’s Environment Report, 2022, released by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, India’s rank dropped primarily because of major challenges in 11 SDGs including zero hunger, good health and wellbeing, gender equality and sustainable cities and communities.
India also performed poorly in dealing with quality education and life on land aspects.
The previous year, India had suffered on the fronts of ending hunger and achieving food security, achieving gender equality and building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and fostering innovation.
On the state-wise preparedness, the report said Jharkhand and Bihar are the least prepared to meet the SDGs by the target year 2030.
Kerala ranked first, followed by Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh in the second position.
The third position was shared by Goa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Among the Union Territories, Chandigarh was ranked first, followed by Delhi, Lakshadweep and Puducherry in the second place and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on the third.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, was adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, which provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet.
There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals which are an urgent call for action by all countries in a global partnership.
Some of these goals are no poverty, zero hunger, good health and wellbeing, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure.
It also includes, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace, justice and strong institutions and lastly strengthening global partnerships for the goals.

7. RBI imposes penalty on 3 co-op banks:

The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty on three cooperative banks, including Nagrik Sahakari Bank Maryadit, Raipur, Chhattisgarh, for deficiencies in regulatory compliances.
A fine of Rs 4.50 lakh has been imposed on Nagrik Sahakari Bank Maryadit for contravention of the directions issued by the RBI to urban cooperative banks on exposure norms and statutory/other restrictions-UCBs and Know Your Customer (KYC).
The Reserve Bank has imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh on Jila Sahakari Kendriya Bank Maryadit, Panna for contravention of certain provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, the Depositor Education and Awareness Fund Scheme, 2014 and KYC.
Also, a penalty of Rs 25,000 was imposed on Jila Sahakari Kendriya Bank Maryadit, Satna for non-compliance with the provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 and the Depositor Education and Awareness Fund Scheme, 2014.
The RBI, however, added the penalties are based on deficiencies in regulatory compliance and is not intended to pronounce upon the validity of any transaction or agreement entered into by the banks with their respective customers.

8. Union Bank of India partners with Ambit Finvest for co-lending to MSMEs:

This alliance will ensure underwriting for originations, positively impacting the creditworthiness of MSMEs, in 11 states that are currently covered by Ambit Finvest.
Ambit Finvest Private Limited (Ambit Finvest), the Non-Deposit taking Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) of the Ambit Group has signed a co-lending agreement with Union Bank of India (UBI) for lending to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) customers.
This alliance will ensure underwriting for originations, positively impacting the creditworthiness of MSMEs, in 11 states that are currently covered by Ambit Finvest.
Many MSMEs face challenges of higher interest rates or are excluded from access to banking services.
Through this innovative model of lending, MSMEs will now enjoy a blended lower rate of interest, translating into a lower cost of funds, helping them deploy capital more effectively in their business.
The partnership with Ambit Finvest Pvt Ltd. is part of UBI’s strategy to bring synergy between both the companies that will help us serve the most deserving and underserviced businesses.

9. Bharat Petroleum to invest Rs. 3,972 Crore for Development of City Gas Distribution Network in Aurangabad and Ahmednagar:

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a ‘Maharatna’ and a Fortune Global 500 Company, has launched the city gas distribution (CGD) network in Aurangabad and Ahmednagar districts.
Aurangabad (Maharashtra) [India], March 1 (ANI/NewsVoir): Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a ‘Maharatna’ and a Fortune Global 500 Company, has launched the city gas distribution (CGD) network in Aurangabad and Ahmednagar districts.
The Company will invest around Rs. 1,600 crore over next 5 years and a total of Rs. 4000 Cores for completion of full project.
BPCL won geographical area (GA) of Aurangabad and Ahmednagar during 9th round of bidding of PNGRB, through a wholly owned subsidiary Bharat Gas Resources Ltd (BGRL).
During the first five years, approximately 3 lakh PNG connections, 100 CNG filling stations and laying of 350 km of steel pipeline network is planned in an area of 27,178 sq. km. in the GA.
Speaking at the launch of CGD network in Aurangabad, Sukhmal Jain, Executive Director (Gas), Aurangabad and Ahmednagar will enter an era of Natural Gas as Piped Natural Gas and Compressed Natural Gas network will spread across both districts.

Bharat Petroleum in City Gas Distribution Business The government has set a vision to make India a gas-based economy.
The goal is to increase the share of gas in the energy mix from the current 6 per cent to 15 per cent in 2030.
We have already witnessed a growing demand for natural gas owing to its attribute of being a cleaner fuel, and of course improvement in supply and distribution infrastructure over the years.
BPCL has emerged a major player in taking the vision of gas based economy a reality.
After the successful bidding in the 11th bidding round by PNGRB, BPCL and its JV now have presence in 48 Geographical Areas in 94 Districts in 18th States, to develop City Gas Distribution (CGD) Networks.
CGD Network project envisages marketing of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to various customers in domestic, commercial & industrial segments and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to the automotive segment.
BPCL’s committed investment in CGD network, on standalone basis, would now increase to Rs. 22,000 Crore.
CNG is substantially economical and Eco-friendly than the conventional liquid auto fuel.
It will bring clean cooking fuel at the door step of domestic house hold as well as providing clean fuel option to commercial and industries.

12. Nepal-India sign MoU on supply of Urea and DAP under G2G agreement:

The MoU was signed by Rajesh Kumar Chaturvedi, Secretary (Chemical and Fertilizers), Government of India, on the Indian side, and Dr Govinda Prasad Sharma, Secretary (Agriculture and Livestock Development) on the Nepali side.
A virtual ceremony to sign and exchange the MoU was held on 28 February 2022 in presence of Mahindra Ray Yadav, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Government of Nepal and Vinay Mohan Kwatra, Ambassador of India to Nepal.
Rajesh Kumar Chaturvedi, Rajesh Kumar Chaturvedi, highlighted the close and multi-faceted nature of India-Nepal ties and hoped that the MoU will further boost bilateral cooperation in the agriculture sector by supporting Nepal’s economy and food security.
The signing of this MoU is expected to help address the recurring fertilizer shortages in Nepal and enable improve agricultural productivity for the direct benefit of Nepali farmers.
The MoU is yet another milestone in the bilateral economic cooperation and also an important reflection of the priority attached by India to its partnership with Nepal.

14. Ukraine successfully conducts Starlink satellite test Kyiv:

Ukraine successfully conducted test of Space X’s Starlink satellite system.
According to The Kyiv Independent, during the test of the satellite internet system the speed crossed 200 megabits per second.
A shipment of Starlink terminals, which allow internet users to access satellite-based internet from SpaceX.
Ukraine’s minister of digital transformation Mykhailo Fedorov thanked the SpaceX founder Elon Musk for the shipment.
The shipment comes after the Ukrainian leader requested the devices to circumvent internet outages in Ukraine.
“Starlink service is now active in Ukraine” adding “more terminals en route.

15. Indian Navy participates at Goa Carnival displaying tableau presenting short skit:

The Indian Navy participated in the Goa Carnival at Vasco-da-Gama displaying afloat (tableau), presenting a short skit and putting up a scintillating band performance.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the tableau depicted the amphibious transport dock ship, INS Jalashwa, taking part in ‘Operation Samudra Setu’ that was conducted by the Navy to bring relief, succour and medical aid to numerous Indians residing in India and other nations in the region when COVID-19 was declared a serious global pandemic.
The Indian Navy’s contribution in supporting the Government of India’s regional outreach – in the form of repatriating Indian citizens, transporting medical oxygen and delivering 170 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to friendly nations under the ‘Vaccine Maitri’ initiative – was the highlight of the display.
The award of President’s Colour to Naval Aviation was also portrayed.
The float also reflected the theme of Navy Week 2021: ‘Indian Navy – Combat Ready, Credible and Cohesive.

16. Niti Aayog developing National Gender Index:

Niti Aayog is in the process of developing a National Gender Index to measure the progress and identify the persisting gaps in gender equality to make informed policy decisions.
In its latest annual report, Niti Aayog said the index will serve as a tool to map the progress of states and Union Territories (UTs) on defined gender metrics and build the foundation for positive change.
The index will support policy action and advocacy around gender and will be aligned to the framework of Sustainable Development Goals.
Niti Aayog has also developed a draft State Energy and Climate Index to assess the performance of states on indicators such as discoms’ viability and competition; access, affordability and reliability of energy; clean energy initiatives; energy efficiency; generation capacity; and environmental sustainability and new initiatives.
The index will help states to efficiently manage their energy resources and provide better access to energy to the people.

17. Prez inaugurates ‘Arogya Vanam’:

President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday inaugurated the newly-developed ‘Arogya Vanam’ at the President’s Estate here, in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Spread in 6.6 acres, the Arogya Vanam has been developed in the shape of a human sitting in the Yoga Mudra.
It consists of around 215 herbs and plants used for therapeutic purposes in Ayurveda.
Some of the other features of this Vanam are water fountains, Yoga platform, water channel, lotus pond and a view point.
The concept of Arogya Vanam has been conceived with the aim of publicising the importance of Ayurvedic plants and their effects on human body.
This Vanam will now be open for public.

18. Kerala govt starts Angel Investment initiative for start-ups in Dubai:

The Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) has signed up with Dubai Technology Entrepreneur Centre (Dtec) to enable the state’s nascent firms to network with the companies in the Gulf.
The decision comes after KSUM formed an angel investing collective in Dubai that aims to benefit startups in Kerala.
The proposed pact is in continuation of IGNITE 2022, which KSUM organised earlier this week, to inspire investors in the Middle East, to invest in Kerala’s tech startups.
IGNITE envisaged an Angel Investing Network, comprising expatriate Indian entrepreneurs, who wish to invest in Kerala’s startups.
The event saw the convergence of successful Malayali entrepreneurs and industrialists, along with senior officials of the state government.
Conclave at Dubai was organised jointly by UAE industrialists’ organisation called the International Promoters Association, e-commerce online platform called MalayaliBusiness.com, besides KSUM.
Addressing the meet, KSUM Chief Executive Officer PM Riyas said the startups in Kerala, too, merited heavy investment at a time, when the knowledge economy was gaining an upper hand across the world.

IGNITE saw the announcement of iWire Global investing in KSUM-incubated Fops startup.
The conclave also staged pitching by other KSUM startups such as Farmers Fresh Zone, channeliam.com and Transight.
The proceedings at IGNITE 2022 were led, among others, by IPA Chairman VK Shamsudeen and KSUM representative Nasif NM.
The event hosted an expo by several companies. KSUM is a nodal agency of Kerala government for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in the state.

19. GST collection crosses 1.30 lakh crore mark in February:

More than one lakh 33 thousand crore rupees Gross GST Revenue was collected during the month of February.
Collection of revenues for the month of February this year is 18 percent higher than the GST revenues in the same month last year and 26 percent higher than the GST revenues in February 2020.
The GST collection has crossed one lakh 30 thousand crore mark for the fifth time so far.
