  • The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has directed IL&FS to distribute Rs 1,925 crore to its financial creditors from the payments received in connection with the Gurgaon metro project.
  • The appellate tribunal also made it clear that the distribution of the amount to the lenders will also be subject to the final resolution of the IL&FS companies concerned.
  • The amount is part of the termination compensation received from two IL&FS subsidiaries and Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) — Rapid Metro Rail Gurgaon Limited (RMGL) and Rapid Metro Rail Gurgaon South Limited (RMGSL) — from Haryana ShehariVikasPradhikaran (HSVP).
  • The three entities and Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation Ltd were part of the concession agreement for the Gurgaon metro project but the agreement was later terminated due to differences between IL&FS subsidiaries and the two Haryana government entities.
  • Rapid Metro Rail Gurgaon Limited (RMGL) and Rapid Metro Rail Gurgaon South Limited received Rs 638.01 crore and Rs 1,287.90 crore, respectively, as interim termination payments in their escrow accounts from HSVP, following the order of the Supreme Court.
  • The total amount was Rs 2,407.40 crore.
  • In the order, NCLAT has directed IL&FS to pay Rs 1,925 crore, which is 80 percent of the amount received from HSVP as interim termination payments to the financial creditors as per the interim distribution framework.
  • A three-member NCLAT bench has passed the order on pleas by Canara Bank and Union Bank of India filed on behalf of IL&FS’ consortium of lenders.

  • GST-registered businesses with an annual turnover of more than Rs 5 crore will soon have to generate electronic invoices for B2B transactions.
  • Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) Chairman VivekJohri said the GST Council, comprising finance ministers of the Centre and states, had decided to implement it in a phased manner and with e-invoices being generated, for every B2B (Business-to-Business) transaction, invoice matching by tax authorities would not be required under Goods and Services Tax (GST).
  • Currently, businesses with a turnover of over Rs 20 crore will have to generate e-invoices for B2B transactions.
  • Under GST, e-invoicing for B2B transactions was made mandatory for companies with a turnover of over Rs 500 crore from October 1, 2020, which was then extended to those with a turnover of over Rs 100 crore from January 1, 2021.
  • From April 1 last year, companies with turnover over Rs 50 crore were generating B2B e-invoices, and the threshold was brought down to Rs 20 crore from April 1, 2022.

  • The phased manufacturing programme and the production-linked incentive scheme have gone a long way to cut mobile imports that fell by 33 percent in fiscal 2022, and pushed local production up by around 26 per cent during the year.
  • A Crisil report said that local production of mobile phones has been logging in a 33 per cent annual growth rate between fiscals 2016 and 2021, the pace of which slowed a tad in FY22 to 24-26 per cent.
  • This growth is in spite of the ongoing chip shortage, and three of the global manufacturers met the PLI production targets in FY22.
  • Crisil has projected the growth momentum in production to sustain, with a 22-26 per cent annual growth rate between fiscals 2022 and 2024 to Rs 4-4.5 lakh crore in value terms.
  • Growth will be led by the PLI scheme, which is in the second year for most players.
  • Mobile imports fell 33 per cent year-on-year in fiscal 2022 and the dependency on China came down to 60 per cent from 64 per cent in fiscal 2021, and the same is expected to fall further in the medium-term.

  • The non-life insurance industry reported a 21 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth in premiums in June, driven by healthy growth in premiums of private sector general insurers and standalone health insurers.
  • Further, in April – June quarter (Q1FY23), the industry netted premiums to the tune of Rs 54,492 crore, up 23 per cent YoY over the corresponding period last year.
  • In June, the gross direct premiums underwritten by the non-life insurers, which include general insurers, standalone health insurers, and specialised insurers, were to the tune of Rs 17,810.51 crore.
  • General insurers, who operate in different lines of business such as motor, health, crop, etc., saw their premiums rise 19.93 per cent in the month to Rs 15,638.72 crore.
  • Similarly, the five standalone health insurers saw their premiums rise by 32.85 per cent to Rs 2,004.77 crore.
