1. National Girl Child Day 2022:

  • Gender discrimination is a major problem that girls face throughout their life.
  • National Girl Child Day is observed every year in India on January 24 to promote awareness about the rights of a girl child and to promote the importance of their education, health, and nutrition.
  • The day is in line with with government campaigns and initiatives such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Save the Girl Child, free/subsidized education, and women’s reservations in colleges and universities.
  • The National Girl Child Day is celebrated with events and programs based on annual themes. ‘Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow’ was the theme for 2019.
  • In 2020, the theme was “My voice, Our Common Future.”
  • ‘Digital Generation, Our Generation’ was the theme for National Girl Child Day in 2021.

2. Smriti Mandhana named ICC women’s Cricketer of the Year

  • India’s swashbuckling opener Smriti Mandhana was on Monday named the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year for the second time for her stellar run of form across all formats in 2021.
  • Mandhana, who also made it to the ICC T20 women’s Team of the Year, pipped fellow nominees Tammy Beaumont of England, Lizelle Lee of South Africa and Gaby Lewis of Ireland for the to the top award — the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, the ICC said in a statement.
  • The Southpaw had won the award in 2018 as well when she was also named the women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year, making her only the second women’s player to win the highest individual distinction in the overall category.
  • The Indian T20 vice-captain is only the second India woman player to bag an ICC award after veteran fast bowler Jhulan Goswami, who was named the ICC Player of the Year in 2007.
  • Mandhana made India’s first-ever pink-ball Test even more memorable by smashing her maiden century in the longest format.

Babar Azam named ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of 2021:

  • Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has been named as ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of 2021.
  • Babar Azam might have played only six ODis in 2021, but he made vital contributions in the two series that Pakistan played this year.
  • He was the second-highest run-scorer with 228 runs and was the Player of the Match in both of Pakistan’s wins in the 2-1 series victory against South Africa.
  • The architect of Pakistan’s chase of 274 in the first ODI, Babar made a century and laid the foundation with an 82-ball 94 in the final ODI where the visitors posted 320 batting first.
  • He was the lone warrior for Pakistan when they were swept by England 3-0.
  • He accumulated 177 runs in three games but found no support none of the other batters managed to score more than 100 in the series.
  • Azam’s best performance this year came in a losing cause in the final ODI against England.
  • With the series already lost, Pakistan were playing for pride as well as crucial ICC Cricket World Cup Super League points in the third ODI at Birmingham.
  • Put in to bat first, Pakistan posted 331, with Babar scoring close to half of the team’s runs.

Lizelle Lee named ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of 2021:

  • South Africa batter Lizelle Lee was named as ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of 2021, after she finished the year as the highest run-scorer in 50-over format.
  • Lee’s year got off to a less-than-ideal start, getting out for a duck in the first ODI against Pakistan, but she came back strongly with two scores of 40+ and played a vital role in South Africa’s sweep.

England captain Root named ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2021:

  • Joe Root has been named the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2021.
  • The England captain scored 1,708 runs in Test cricket in 2021, the third highest tally by a single batter in a year in history.
  • He joins Sir Alastair Cook (2011), his predecessor as captain, as the only English cricketers to take the annual prize.

ICC Awards: Shaheen Shah Afridi wins the Sir Garfield Sobers Award for the Men’s Player of the Year for 2021.

  • Men’s Cricketer of the Year for 2021.
  • Shaheen took 78 wickets in 36 internationals at an average of 22.20 in 2021.
  • The tall Pakistani quick was on fire throughout 2021, knocking some of the best batters over across all three formats of the game.

3. Fullerton India and Paytm tie up to provide lending products:

  • Fullerton India and One97 Communications, which owns Paytm, have partnered to provide lending products to merchant partners and consumers.
  • “With the partnership, the two will leverage data-driven insights and wide reach to bring credit to new-to-credit users,” said a statement.
  • The programme will offer Paytm Postpaid or buy-now-pay-later to consumers on the Paytm platform while utilising Fullerton’s risk assessment capabilities and scale, it further said.

4. City Union Bank launches fitness watch debit card in tie-up with GOQi

  • City Union Bank, the oldest Private Sector Bank in India, in association with smart-tech-enabled preventive healthcare platform GOQii and powered by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has launched a wearable payment solution called CUB fitness watch debit card.
  • Customers need to hold this wristwatch in front of the PoS device during payment like tapping the card on PoS.
  • For payments above Rs 5,000, customers need to tap and enter their PIN.
  • The introductory price of a smartwatch debit card is Rs 3,499, as compared to an actual cost of Rs 6,499).
  • Customers can set limits for their payments using Net / Mobile Banking.
  • Payments made using this Debit Card in a Fitness Watch are safe and secure, the bank said in a statement.
  • For each transaction done using the watch, SMS will be sent to the registered mobile number.
  • Customers can raise a request for the Fitness Watch Debit Card through Net banking/ Mobile banking.
  • Usage of wristwatches can be managed by customers on their own through CUB All in One Mobile App.
  • Besides being useful for making contactless payments, this Fitness Watch enables the wearer to monitor their Oxygen Level (Sp02), Body Temperature, Heart Rate, Blood Pressure and 18 Exercise Modes.
  • In addition, for early adopters, GOQii offers a Free wellness package for three months comprising personal health coach, doctor tele-consult & interactive video coaching.
  • CUB had recently launched their Debit Card in a Key Chain which also enables contactless Payment On the Go solutions.

5. Indipaisa, Hitachi Payments tie-up to develop new fintech platform for MSMEs:

  • Hitachi Payment Services and Indipaisa have tied up to develop a new Fintech platform for India’s MSMEs.

6. RBI fines eight cooperative banks for regulatory compliances:

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on January 24 imposed monetary penalties on eight cooperative banks for the violation of loan and know your customer norms.
  • These banks are Rajkot Peoples Cooperative Bank, Vasai Janata Sahakari Bank, Mogaveera Cooperative Bank, The Varachha Cooperative Bank, The Associate Cooperative Bank, Bhadradri Cooperative Urban Bank, The Jammu Central Co-operative Bank and Jodhpur Nagrik Sahakari Bank.
  • In most cases, the violations pertain to giving loans and advances to directors or related parties, overlooking know-your-customer norms and lending exposure guidelines.
  • The banking regulator periodically punishes erring cooperative banks for various violations.
  • If violations continue, the central bank takes even stronger measures to safeguard the interest of depositors.
  • The RBI’s enforcement operation is conducted by the Enforcement Department.
  • The RBI’s EFD was set up in April 2017 to separate enforcement action from teh supervisory process.
  • EFD identifies actionable violations from inspection reports, risk assessment and scrutiny reports.

7. CCI approves acquisition of shares of Future Generali India Life Insurance by Generali Participations Netherlands:

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approves acquisition of shares of Future Generali India Life Insurance Company Limited (FGLIC) by Generali Participations Netherlands N.V (GPN), pursuant to which GPN’s shareholding in FGLIC will stand increased from 49% to upto approx. 71%.
  • GPN is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A (Generali Group), the ultimate parent entity of the Generali group of companies.
  • The Generali Group is a global insurance provider and is present in the Indian life insurance industry in India through FGLIC.
  • GPN in engaged in the provision of life insurance services in India through FGLIC.
  • FGLIC is a life insurance company engaged in the provision of life insurance services/products in India.
  • FGLIC provides simplified solutions for the financial security of customers, to deliver relevant and accessible insurance solutions.

8. CCI approves acquisition of 100 per cent shares in GlaxoSmithKline Asia by parent group companies:

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) said it has approved acquisition of GlaxoSmithKline Asia Private Limited (GSKAPL) shareholding by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Overseas Limited and GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare UK Trading Limited.
  • GSKAPL is a consumer healthcare company that is engaged in the marketing and distribution of oral healthcare products under various brand names such as Sensodyne, Parodontax, Polident and over-the-counter medicines products under the brand names such as Crocin, ENO.
  • The Proposed Combination involves collective acquisition of 100 per cent shares of the company.
  • Prior to the proposed combination, GSKAPL will acquire the trademarks pertaining to “Iodex” and “Ostocalcium” brands in India alongwith the legal, economic, commercial and marketing rights of such brands and other associated assets (GSK Consumer Brands) from GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Limited, the CCI said in a statement.
  • GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Overseas Limited is a wholly-owned subsidiary of GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Holdings (No.2) Limited (“GSK CH HoldCo”).
  • It is a part of the overall GlaxoSmithkline (GSK) group and its principal activity is to act as an investment holding company for GSK CH HoldCo and its subsidiaries.
  • GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare UK Trading Limited is a part of the overall GSK group and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of GSK CH HoldCo.
  • It is engaged in the distribution and sale of consumer healthcare products, manufacturing, marketing, providing management services to the consumer healthcare group and providing research and development services to other consumer healthcare companies within the GSK group.

11. India, Israel launch commemorative logo to mark 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties:

  • India and Israel launched a commemorative logo to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
  • The logo features the Star of David and the AshokaChakra- the two symbols that adorn the national flags of both countries- and forms the numeral 30 depicting the 30th anniversary of bilateral relations.
  • This special logo symbolises the strong friendship, love and admiration that exists between the people of Israel and the people of India.
  • It also depicts the growing strategic partnership between the two sides.
  • The logo was unveiled virtually at an online event in the presence of Ambassador of Israel to India Naor Gilonand Ambassador of India to Israel Sanjeev Singla.
  • To create the 30th-anniversary logo, both countries launched a logo design contest last year for students of prominent design colleges in Israel and India.
  • Entries were invited from Holon Institute of Technology, Israel and National Institute of Design, India. Many Israeli and Indian students participated in this contest.

12. Commemorative coin on poet released:

  • A new coin in the denomination of Rs 150 brought out by the Union government to mark the 150th birth anniversary of poet Muddana was released by Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel here on Monday.
  • The coin, with a circumference of 44 mm and weighing 35 gm, has been made with an alloy of the four metals – silver, copper, nickel and zinc.
  • The face of the coin bears the lion of the Ashoka Pillar in the centre with ‘Satyameva Jayathe’ inscribed below.
  • On the left periphery is written Bharath in Devanagari script and on the right India is written in English.
  • It also bears the rupee symbol and the denominational value 150 below the lion’s face.
  • The other face of the coin bears the image of Kavi Muddana in the centre and ‘Kavi Muddana Ki 150th Jayanthi’ written in Hindi and 150th birth anniversary of Kavi Muddana in English.
  • The year 1870-2020 is also mentioned below the image of Muddana.
  • Kavi Muddana (Nandalike Laxminarayanappa), a native of Nandalike in Karkala, was a popular and highly respected figure in the history of Kannada literature.
  • He lived from 1870 to 1901.
  • His rich contributions to Kannada literature are held in high esteem even to this day.
  • Muddana, who worked as a physical education teacher for a living, had authored works like Ratnavati Kalyana, Srirama Pattabhisheka, Adbhuta Ramayana and Sri Ramashwamedha.

13. PM Modi confers Subhas Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar to NDRF:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, after unveiling the hologram statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate on the occasion of his 125th birth anniversary, conferred the ‘Subhas Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskars’ to the 8th Bn National Disasters Response Force, Ghaziabad for its work in disaster realm for the year 2019.
  • Director general NDRF, Atul Karwal was present at the ceremony.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the hologram statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate here.
  • In order to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of the great freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and as part of the year-long celebrations, the government has decided to install a grand statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate.
  • Till the work on the statue is completed, a hologram statue of Netaji will be present at the same place.
  • The hologram statue is powered by a 30,000 lumens 4K projector.
  • During the programme, the Prime Minister also conferred the Subhas Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskars for the years 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 in the investiture ceremony.
  • A total of seven awards was presented during the ceremony.

14. Under-bridge in Gujarat’s Rajkot named after General Bipin Rawat

  • The Gujarat government on Monday named an under-bridge in Rajkot after General Bipin Rawat to honour the country’s first Chief of Defence Staff who died in a chopper crash in December.
  • Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the under-bridge located in Laxmi Nagar area virtually.
  • ‘In recent times, the head of all three wings of the armed forces, CDS General Bipin Rawat, lost his life in a tragedy.
  • This bridge should be named CDS General Bipin Rawat Bridge, Patel said.
  • Earlier, Rajkot Mayor Pradeep Dav had asked the CM to suggest a name for the structure, which was built at a cost of Rs 48 crore.

15. Ministry of Culture organized Rangoli Utsav ‘Umang’ to celebrate National Girl Child Day under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav

  • The nation is celebrating Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of India’s Independence.
  • Series of events are being organized to mark the occasion across the nation.
  • As part of the celebrations, Ministry of Culture organized the ‘Umang Rangoli Utsav’ on 24th January 2022.
  • The day is celebrated as National Girl Child Day every year, so to commemorate the day, this year, a nationwide eventcelebrating the Girl Child was organized where the participantsdrewrangoli decorations on the roads and squares named after the female freedom fighters or the female role models of the country.
  • The rangoli decorations were made at more than 70 locations in 19 states.
  • The event celebrated ‘Girl Child Day’ and ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ together to appreciate the contributions of women to the journey of a progressive India@75.

16. Ministry of Electronics & IT releases 2nd Volume of Vision Document on Electronics Manufacturing

  • Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, in association with ICEA, released a 5-year roadmap and Vision Document for the electronics sector, titled “$300 bn Sustainable Electronics Manufacturing & Exports by 2026.”
  • This roadmap is the second volume of a two-part Vision Document – the first of which titled “Increasing India’s Electronics Exports and Share in GVCs” was released in November 2021.
  • This report provides a year-wise break-up and production projections for the various products that will lead India’s transformation into a US$300 billion electronics manufacturing powerhouse, from the current US$75 billion.
  • Amongst the key products that are expected to lead India’s growth in electronics manufacturing include Mobile Phones, IT Hardware (laptops, tablets), Consumer electronics (TV and audio), Industrial electronics, Auto electronics, Electronic components, LED Lighting, Strategic electronics, PCBA, Wearables and hearables, and Telecom equipment (see chart).
  • Mobile manufacturing that is expected to cross US$100 billion annual production – up from the current US$30 billion – is expected to constitute nearly 40% of this ambitious growth.

17. Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya launches Revamped CGHS Website and Mobile App “MyCGHS”:

  • Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare digitally launched the revamped CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme) website (www.cghs.gov.in) and mobile app, “MyCGHS”, in the presence of Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare.
  • The new CGHS website and its extension as a Mobile Application called “MyCGHS”, with various beneficiary friendly features, have been designed for ease of service delivery for the beneficiaries within the safe confines of his home especially during the COVID pandemic.
  • The various features of the upgraded CGHS website are as follows:
  • The Website has been developed in accordance with GIGW (Guidelines for Indian Government Websites).
  • These standards and guidelines make the website 3U compliant i.e., Usable, User-Centric and Universally Accessible.
  • As mandated by the GIGW, the site has been made Bilingual (Hindi and English) with provision to make it multi-lingual in future.
  • The Website interface is intuitive and with ease of accessing desired information. Extensive search facility has been provided to access the website contents.
  • User friendly features have been added for visually impaired persons like audio play of the text and option to increase the font size.
  • There is a direct link to the eSanjeevani Teleconsultation facility through the CGHS website.
  • The website provides link to the online Grievance Portal developed for CGHS beneficiaries with provision for the grievance to be sent directly to the concerned officer with both SMS and email alert to the concerned officer for timely redressal of complaints.
  • The website also has link to beneficiary login for accessing various online facilities such as tracking of Medical Claims, grievances, status of CGHS card, downloading of CGHS card, accessing history of medicines, online appointment system and various other facilities.
  • The Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) is the nodal healthcare provider to Central Government employees, pensioners and certain other category of beneficiaries and their dependents enrolled under the scheme.
  • It caters to the healthcare needs of eligible beneficiaries covering all four pillars of democratic set up in India namely Legislature, Judiciary, Executive and Press and is unique of its kind due to the large volume of its beneficiary base and pan India presence providing healthcare through allopathic as well as indigenous systems of medicine.
  • In order to cater to India’s increasing digital penetration, CGHS has laid emphasis on delivery of services through various online channels.

18. CCI imposes penalty on maritime transport companies for indulging in cartelisation:

  • The Competition Commission of India (‘CCI’) passed a final order against four maritime transport companies namely Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (‘NYK Line’), Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. (‘K-Line’), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. (‘MOL’) and Nissan Motor Car Carrier Company (‘NMCC’) for indulging in cartelisation in the provision of maritime motor vehicle transport services to automobile Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) for various trade routes.
  • Amongst these four companies, NYK Line, MOL and NMCC were lesser penalty applicants before CCI.
  • The evaluation of available evidence revealed that there was an agreement between NYK Line, K-Line, MOL and NMCC with the objective of enforcement of “Respect Rule”, which implied avoiding competition with each other and protecting the business of incumbent carrier with the respective OEM.
  • To achieve the said objective, the maritime transport companies resorted to multi-lateral as well as bilateral contacts/ meetings/ e-mails with each other to share commercially sensitive information which, inter alia, included freight rates.
  • They also aimed to preserve their position in the market and maintain or increase prices, including by resisting requests for price reduction from certain OEMs.
  • Accordingly, based on a cumulative assessment of the evidence, the Commission held all the four opposite parties, i.e., NYK Line, K-Line, MOL and NMCC, guilty of contravention of the provisions of Section 3 of the Competition Act, 2002 (the Act), which prohibits anti-competitive agreements including cartels, from 2009 to 2012.
  • Further, 14 individuals of NYK Line, 10 individuals of K-Line, 6 individuals of MOL and 3 individuals of NMCC, were also held liable for the anti-competitive conduct of their respective companies, in terms of the provisions of Section 48 of the Act.
  • As three companies filed lesser penalty applications, the Commission gave benefit of reduction in penalty by 100% to NYK Line and its individuals, 50% to MOL and its individuals and 30% to NMCC and its individuals.
  • Accordingly, the Commission directed K-Line, MOL and NMCC to pay penalties to the tune of approx. INR 24.23 crores, INR 10.12 crores and INR 28.69 crores respectively, besides passing a cease-and-desist order.

19. Haryana, HP ink deal to build Adi Badri Dam, revive mythical Saraswati river:

  • The Haryana CM said the objective of the project is to revive the Saraswati river as well as increase ground water level.
  • The governments of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh Friday entered into an agreement to build a dam at Adi Badri in Yamunanagar district, which, among others, will rejuvenate the mythical Saraswati river.
  • Adi Badri, situated in Haryana near the Himachal Pradesh border, is believed to be the river’s origin point.
  • Haryana Chief Secretary Sanjeev Kaushal and Himachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Ram Subhag Singh signed the MoU on behalf of the respective state governments for the construction of the Adi Badri Dam.
  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and his Himachal counterpart Jai Ram Thakur were also present.
