2. Ranji Trophy league phase set to be held from February 16 to March 5:

• Red ball domestic cricket in India will make a much-awaited return after two years when the league stage of the Ranji Trophy is held from February 16 to March 5, as per the revised scheduled prepared by the BCCI.
• It was originally scheduled to start from January 13. The tournament couldn’t be conducted last year due to the pandemic.
• Venues for the 38-team event are Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Trivandrum, Cuttack, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Baroda and Rajkot, which means nine separate bio-bubbles will be created.
• There will be 8 groups of 4 teams each with the plate group comprising 6 teams.
• The Ranji Trophy, which was cancelled for the first time ever in its rich history.
• The lack of red ball cricket was making the players desperate with some of them using the uncertain period to play club cricket in the UK.

3. Tata Steel Chess 2022: Magnus Carlsen beats Fabiano Caruana to clinch title with a round to spare

• Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi lost to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan in the 12th and penultimate round of the Tata Steel Masters chess here to jointly occupy the sixth place.
• World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen clinched his eighth title in Wijk aan Zee after beating Fabiano Caruana in round 12.
• The Norwegian, who will get a win by forfeit (over Daniil Dubov) in the final round, is a full point ahead of his closest competitors — Richard Rapport and Mamedyarov.
• While Gujrathi lost to Mamedyarov and remains on six points, compatriot R Praggnanandhaa got a win by forfeit as Dubov has withdrawn from the tournament after contracting COVID-19.
• While Gujrathi plays Russian Sergey Karjakin in the final round, Praggnanandhaa takes on Andrei Esipenko.

4. PNB launches co-branded credit card with Patanjali in partnership with RuPay:

• Punjab National Bank (PNB) & Patanjali Ayurved Limited (PAL) have launched co-branded credit cards in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
• The co-branded credit cards are offered on NCPI’s RuPay Platform and is available in two variants – PNB RuPay Platinum and PNB RuPay Select.
• To purchase day-to-day Patanjali products, along with cash backs, loyalty points, insurance cover etc.
• For 3 months from the card launch, the cardholders may enjoy suitable cashback @2% for transactions over and above ₹2500, subject to a ceiling of ₹50 per transaction at Patanjali Stores.

FEATURES:

• PNB RuPay Platinum and PNB RuPay Select cardholders will receive a welcome bonus of 300 reward points on activation.
• Platinum and Select cards come with attractive insurance cover of ₹2 lakh and ₹10 lakh, respectively for Accidental Death and Personal Total Disability.
• Platinum Card offers a credit limit of ₹25,000 to ₹5 lakh and Select Card ₹50,000 to ₹10 lakh.

5. Chennai Super Kings Becomes India’s First Unicorn Sports Enterprise; Surpasses Market Cap of Parent Entity:

• Ahead of the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has become the country’s first sports Unicorn with its market cap having touched a high of Rs 7,600 crores and its share in the grey market trading in the Rs 210-225 price band.
• The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led CSK, which won its fourth IPL title in Dubai last year, now has a market cap more than its parent entity, India Cements.
• India Cements’ market cap stood at Rs 6,869 crores.
• Two key reasons which have led CSK’s market cap to go past its parent entity are the team winning its fourth IPL title in Dubai, and two new franchises being added to the upcoming season at record prices.
• The Sanjiv Goenka-led RPSG Group bought the Lucknow franchise (Lucknow Super Giants) for Rs 7,090 crore, while CVC Capital acquired the rights for the Ahmedabad franchise for 5,625 crore.

6. NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam acquires 5% Equity stake in PXIL:

• NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd. (NVVN), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Ltd. has acquired 5% equity stake in Power Exchange of India Ltd (PXIL).
• NVVN has purchased these shares from NSE Investment Limited, a co-promoter shareholder of PXIL.

REMARKS:

• NVVN was formed by NTPC Ltd., India’s largest power generator and a Maharatna Company, in the year 2002, as its wholly owned subsidiary to tap the potential of power trading in the country.
• NVVN holds a highest Category ‘I’ power trading license in terms of latest CERC regulations.
• PXIL is India’s first institutionally promoted power exchange, promoted by NSE Investment Ltd. & NCDEX and has been providing innovative and credible solutions since.

7. Lt Gen Manoj Pande takes over as Vice Chief of Army Staff:

• Lt Gen Manoj Pande, PVSM, AVSM, VSM took over as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff on 01 February 2022.
• An alumnus of National Defence Academy, Lt Gen Manoj Pande was commissioned in December 1982 to the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers).
• The General Officer commanded an Engineer Regiment during Operation Parakram in the sensitive Pallanwala Sector along the Line of Control of Jammu and Kashmir.
• He is a graduate of Staff College, Camberley (United Kingdom) and attended the Higher Command (HC) and National Defence College (NDC) Courses.

9. Sreejesh becomes second Indian to win World Games Athlete of the Year Award:

• Veteran India hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh won the prestigious World Games Athlete of the Year for his 2021 performances, becoming only the second Indian to receive the accolade.

• In 2020, Indian women’s hockey captain Rani Rampal became the first Indian to win the honour for her 2019 show.

REMARKS:

• Sreejesh beat competition from sport climber Alberto Ginés López of Spain and Italy’s wushu player Michele Giordano for the award.
• A former India hockey captain and part of the Tokyo Olympics-bronze medal winning side, received 1,27,647 votes, whereas Lopez and Giordane accumulated 67,428 and 52,046 votes respectively.
• He was the only Indian nominated and was recommended by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
• In the FIH Stars Awards in October, Sreejesh was named the goalkeeper of the year for 2021.
• Sreejesh made his senior team debut in 2006, at the South Asian Games in Colombo.
• He has been a regular member in the team since 2011 after saving two penalty strokes in the Asian Champions Trophy Final in Ordos City, China, against Pakistan.
• He had represented India at the 2012 London Olympics and then the World Cup in 2014.
• At the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, he starred in India’s gold medal win, when he saved two penalty strokes against Pakistan in the final.
• He led the Indian team that won the silver medal at the 2016 Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy held at London.
• At the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Sreejesh led the Indian hockey team to the quarterfinals of the tournament. He represented India in 244 senior international matches.

10. India, Nepal sign MoU on construction of motorable bridge over Mahakali river:

• India and Nepal signed a MoU for the construction of a motorable Bridge over the Mahakali River connecting Dharchula (India) with Darchula (Nepal), under Indian grant assistance.
• The MoU was signed by Ambassador of India, Vinay Mohan Kwatra & Secretary, Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Government of Nepal, Rabindra Nath Shrestha.
• The project will enhance cross-border connectivity between the Sudurpaschim province of Nepal & Uttarakhand, India across the Mahakali river where close people-to-people links exist between communities on both sides of the border.

• India has joined a global movement to illuminate 100 landmarks across the world to raise awareness on Neglected Tropical Diseases, NTDs.
• Observing the third World Neglected Tropical Diseases, NTD Day on Sunday, as a key moment to highlight the global community’s commitment to ending NTDs, India joined close to 40 other nations to illuminate the iconic New Delhi Railway Station in purple and orange hues.
• Event was organized by National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control, (NCVBDC) to observe World NTD Day.
• Harmeet Singh Grewal, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry
• In Jharkhand, Gujarat and Karnataka too, iconic landmarks and monuments were illuminated as part of their commitment to eliminate NTDs.

National Affairs – Daily Current Affairs February 01

12. Centre allocates Rs 9,259 cr to special purpose vehicle AIAHL:

• The Centre has allocated Rs 9,259 crore to AIAHL, a government-owned special purpose vehicle set up to handle Air India’s debt and non-core assets, for the next financial year starting from April 1.
• As Per union Budget, The revised estimate of capital expenditure for this fiscal is Rs 6.03 lakh crore.
• This includes an amount of Rs 51,971 crore towards settlement of outstanding guaranteed liabilities of Air India and its other sundry commitments.
• Air India Assets Holding Limited (AIAHL) was set up in 2019.

13. Centre allocates Rs 4,000 crore for Direct Benefit Transfer of LPG subsidy:

• There has been an allocation of Rs 4,000 crore for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) of cooking gas subsidy in the Budget 2022-23.
• This is an increase over the Rs 3,400 crore allocated for the same purpose in the revised estimates of 2021-22.
• The government has not been bearing any subsidy on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) since May 2020 and the subsidy allocation is being used for moderating freight costs.
• This helps lower the cost of LPG to consumers in areas further away from LPG depots.

REMARKS:

• Allocation for an additional subsidy on LPG cylinders, that is payable to the North Eastern Region, has also been raised from Rs 391 crore in 2021-22 to Rs 811 crore in 2022-23.
• The allocation for disbursing new LPG connections to poor households under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) has been halved this time.
• Budget 2022-23 has provisioned Rs 800 crore, down from Rs 1,618 crore in the revised estimates of the Budget 2021-22.
• This is an indication that PMUY is nearing saturation with domestic LPG penetration reaching over 99 % of the country.

14. Govt enhances PLI for domestic solar cells, modules to Rs 24,000 cr:

• Nirmala Sitharaman proposed enhancing the funding under the PLI scheme for domestic solar cells and module manufacturing to Rs 24,000 crore from the existing Rs 4,500 crore to make India an exporting nation.
• In April 2021, the Union Cabinet approved a Rs 4,500 crore production linked incentive (PLI) scheme to boost domestic manufacturing capacity of solar PV modules.
• The scheme was aimed at adding 10,000 MW manufacturing capacity of integrated solar PV modules entailing direct investment of Rs 17,200 crore at present (existing).
• With the increase in allocation to Rs 24,000 crore, the quantum of investments and domestic manufacturing capacity envisaged under the PLI scheme would further increase.

PLI Scheme:

• The PLI scheme — National Programme on High Efficiency Solar PV Modules — approved by the Union Cabinet, was aimed at reducing import dependence in a strategic sector like electricity.
• Under the scheme, solar PV manufacturers will be selected through a transparent competitive bidding process.
• The PLI will be disbursed for five years post commissioning of solar PV manufacturing plants, on sales of high efficiency solar PV modules.

15. Govt extends ECLGS scheme for MSMEs till Mar 2023; thrust on hospitality:

• The Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) that provided additional credit to over 1.3 crore MSMEs will be extended till March 2023 with its guarantee cover expanded by Rs 50,000 crore to Rs 5 lakh crore.
• The additional amount will be exclusively earmarked for the hospitality and related segments to help them recover to pre-pandemic levels.
• As Per Budget 2022-23, The Credit Guarantee Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) scheme will be revamped with required infusion of funds.
• Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) programme will be rolled out with a Rs 6,000 crore outlay spread over 5 years.

16. Centre collects Rs 1,38,394-cr gross GST revenue for January 2022:

• The Centre collected Rs 1,38,394 crore as gross GST (Goods and Services Tax) revenue in the month of January 2022.
• Of the total revenue collected, CGST is Rs 24,674 crore, SGST is Rs 32,016 crore, IGST is Rs 72,030 crore (including Rs 35,181 crore collected on import of goods) and cess is Rs 9,674 crore (including Rs 517 crore collected on import of goods).
• According to the Ministry of Finance, the highest monthly GST collection has been Rs 1,39,708 crore in the month of April 2021.
• The total number of GSTR-3B returns filed up to January 30 2022 is 1.05 crore that includes 36 lakh quarterly returns.
• The government has settled Rs 29,726 crore to CGST and Rs 24,180 crore to SGST from IGST as regular settlement.
• In addition, the Centre has also settled Rs 35,000 crore of IGST on an ad-hoc basis in the ratio of 50:50 between Centre and States/UTs in this month.
• The total revenue of Centre and the States in the month of January 2022 after regular and ad-hoc settlements is Rs 71,900 crore for CGST and Rs 73,696 crore for the SGST.
• The Centre also released GST compensation of Rs 18,000 crore in January 2022 to States/UTs.
• The revenues for the month of January 2022 are 15 % higher than the GST revenues in the same month last year and 25 % higher than the GST revenues in January 2020.
• During the month, revenues from import of goods were 26 % higher and the revenues from the domestic transaction (including import of services) are 12 % higher than the revenues from these sources during the same month last year.
• This is for the fourth time GST collection has crossed Rs 1.30 lakh crore mark.6.7 crore e-way bills were generated in the month of December 2021 which is 14 % higher than 5.8 crore e-way bills generated in the month of November 2021.

17. Odisha Discoms Launch Unified Consumer Mobile App ‘My Tata Power’:

• TPNODL, TPSODL, and TPWODL discoms – joint ventures of Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, have launched a unified mobile app named ‘My Tata Power App’ in Odisha to digitally empower 7 million electricity consumers and provide easy access to electricity supply and service-related information to them.
• The inaugural version of the app is currently available on the Google Play store and it will soon be accessible on the Apple App Store as well.
• The mobile app is launched to bring in a superior consumer service experience to citizens of Odisha, setting the benchmark for Digital Empowerment and Digital Transformation in the state.
• Customers will be able to get service and information right at their fingertips from the safe confines of their homes, contributing to the cause of social distancing during the pandemic.
• As part of Tata Power’s #DoGreen initiative, the adoption of digital services and mobile apps will assist to reduce carbon footprint.
• Consumers will never miss a chance to get a rebate of 4% for timely bill payment via digital payment modes.

18. India to witness GDP growth of 8 to 8.5 pc in 2022-23, states Economic Survey:

• India will witness GDP growth of 8 to 8.5 % in 2022-23, supported by widespread vaccine coverage, gains from supply-side reforms and easing of regulations, robust export growth, and availability of fiscal space to ramp up capital spending.
• The growth projection for 2022-23 is based on the assumption that there will be no further debilitating pandemic related economic disruption, monsoon will be normal, withdrawal of global liquidity by major central banks will be broadly orderly.
• Referring to First Advance Estimates, the Survey states that the Indian economy is estimated to grow by 9.2 % in real terms in 2021-22, after a contraction of 7.3 % in 2020-21.
• It states that Agriculture and allied sectors have been the least impacted by the pandemic and the sector is expected to grow by 3.9 % in 2021-22 after growing by 3.6 % in the previous year.
• In the current year, food grains production for the Kharif season is estimated to post a record level of 150.5 million tonnes.
• According to Survey, the industrial sector went through a sharp rebound from a contraction of 7 % in 2020-21 to an expansion of 11.8 % in this financial year.
• The Survey said that the services sector has been the hardest hit by the pandemic, especially segments that involve human contact.
• This sector is estimated to grow by 8.2 % this financial year following last year’s 8.4 % contraction.
• The Survey added that total consumption is estimated to have grown by 7.0 % in 2021-22 with government consumption remaining the biggest contributor as in the previous year.
• In conclusion, the Survey is quite optimistic that overall macro-economic stability indicators suggest that the Indian Economy is well placed to take on the challenges of 2022-23 and one of the reasons that the country’s Economy is in good position is its unique response strategy.
• The pre-budget Economic Survey was tabled ahead of the Union Budget for the next financial year beginning April 1st, 2022.
