  • Indian shooter Avani Lekhara won the Best Female Debut honour at the 2021 Paralympics Awards.
  • Lekhara, who suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident in 2012, is the first Indian to clinch gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics Games 2020.
  • The 20-year-old achieved the record-breaking feat in the women’s 10m air rifle SH1, with score of 249.6 points in the final event and equalled the world record at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.
  • She also won bronze medal in women’s 50m rifle 3 positions SH1 and became the first Indian female to bag two medals in the Games’ history.
  • Lekhara was also India’s flagbearer at the closing ceremony. India won an unprecedented 19 medals at the Paralympics Games.

2. World Bank unveils ____ billion support aid for poorest nation to recover from Covid-19 crisis?

  • The World Bank’s fund to help the world’s poorest nations got a $93 billion injection of cash to help scale up aid for pandemic recovery and other programs, the institution announced.
  • It was the biggest replenishment ever for the International Development Association (IDA), which provides grants for 74 countries, most of which are in Africa, the Washington-based development lender said.
  • The package includes $23.5 billion of contributions from 48 high- and middle-income countries as well as financing raised in the capital markets and the World Bank’s own contributions, according to a statement.
  • Today’s generous commitment by our partners is a critical step toward supporting poor countries in their efforts to recover from the Covid-19 crisis, World Bank President David Malpass said.
  • The IDA fund is replenished every three years, but because of the pandemic, the latest cash injection was pulled forward by a year and will be in place through June 2025.
  • The World Bank said the funds will help countries better prepare for future crises, including pandemics, financial shocks, and natural disasters.
  • While the funds will support countries globally, resources are increasingly going to Africa, which will receive about 70 percent of the funding.

  • The President and First Lady Savita Kovind offered prayers at the renovated temple.
  • Bangladesh’s junior minister for religious affairs Faridul Alam Khan along with the temple’s priests received the President, the First Lady and their daughter Swati while they stayed at the venue for nearly 30 minutes.

  • In a statement, MapmyIndia, a provider of advanced digital maps, said that the MapmyIndia app provides road safety alerts to users about upcoming accident hazards while driving.
  • By using this navigation app, users will get voice and visual alerts about upcoming accident-prone zones, speed breakers, sharp curves, potholes etc, to ensure they can drive carefully and avoid accidents, it added.
  • Further through the app, users and authorities can also report and broadcast accidents, unsafe areas, road and traffic issues on the map to help benefit other users, which will be analysed by IIT Madras and MapmyIndia and will then be used by the government to improve road conditions in future.
  • The statement said that the MapmyIndia had won the government of India’s Aatmanirbhar App Innovation Challenge in 2020.
