2. According to ACI Worldwide, Digital Payments in India to grow to 71.7% of all payment transactions by which year?

  • ACI Worldwide released a new report that indicated more than 70.3 billion real-time payments transactions were processed globally in 2020, a surge of 41 per cent compared to the previous year.
  • This comes as the Covid-19 pandemic dramatically accelerated trends away from cash and cheques towards greater reliance on real-time and digital payments, according to the report.
  • For the study, the company analysed global real-time, account-to-account payment volumes and forecasts across 48 global markets.
  • It projected a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for real-time payments of 23.6 percent from 2020 to 2025.
  • According to the report, India retained the top spot with 25.5 billion real-time payments transactions, followed by China with 15.7 bn transactions.
  • In 2020, the transaction volume share in India stood at 15.6 per cent and 22.9 per cent for instant payments and other electronic payments respectively, while paper-based payments had a considerable share of 61.4 per cent.
  • The report speculated that by 2024 the share of real-time payments volume in overall electronic transactions will exceed 50 per cent.
  • This will further touch 71.7 per cent by 2025.

Global trend:

  • The report noted that mobile wallet adoption rose to a historic high of 46 per cent in 2020, up from 40.6 per cent in 2019 and 18.9 per cent in 2018.
  • Countries like Brazil, Mexico, and Malaysia where many people historically relied on cash are now some of the fastest adopters of mobile wallets.
  • On a global level, the total number of real-time transactions in 2020 was 70.3 billion, up 41 per cent from 50.0 billion in 2019.

Payment fraud:

  • Globally, card-related fraud remains the highest in terms of reported incidents from consumers.
  • However, fraud incidents associated with real-time payments were on the rise from 2019 to 2020 as fraudsters tend to target new channels.
  • Real-time payments scams that were on the rise include confidence tricks (12.5 per cent rising to 13.7 per cent), Identity theft (6 per cent rising to 11.6 per cent) and digital wallet account hacks (4.4 per cent rising to 6.2 per cent).

  • However, the threat of data breaches remains significant, According to Canalys estimates, investment in cloud infrastructure services increased 33 per cent in 2020 to $142 billion.
  • This is an increase of $45 billion in annual spend as compared to 2019.
  • Cloud software services increased over 20 per cent during the same period.
  • Organisations must look to also prioritise cybersecurity as the data breach crisis escalated in 2020.
  • According to Canalys, more records were compromised in just 12 months than in the previous 15 years combined.
  • As per data based on public sources, nearly 30 billion records were compromised within 12-months.

  • The company has developed technology to utilise mixed municipal solid waste (MSW) to generate power, light diesel oil and compost.
  • It will produce around 10 tonnes of compost and 3,000 kg of light diesel oil
  • The plant was recently inaugurated in Lamdeng, Imphal.
  • Manipur designed and executed a tripartite agreement between MAHUD (Municipal Administration, Housing & Urban Development), Department of Power, Manipur and IEC-TSL Ingenious Energy LLP, Ahmedabad.

  • The project, which is estimated to cost around 423 crore rupees, will have 4.5 lakh photovoltaic panels.
  • The solar panels will cover 450-acre area of the reservoir and can be expanded in the future.
  • NTPC’s efforts to set up floating solar power projects is aimed at reducing its carbon footprints and accelerate its green energy production to 30 per cent of its capacity.
  • The world’s largest solar power plant with 600 MW capacity is being set up on Omkareshwar Dam on Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh.
  • The project costing 3,000 crore rupees is expected to start power generation only by 2022-23.

  • The policy document has been uploaded on the website of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
  • For quite some time different stake holders have been demanding for a comprehensive policy for prevention and management of rare diseases.
  • The field of rare diseases is very complex and heterogeneous and prevention, treatment and management of rare diseases has multiple challenges.
  • Early diagnosis of rare diseases is a major challenge owing to a variety of factors that include lack of awareness among primary care physicians, lack of adequate screening and diagnostic facilities etc.
  • The Rare Diseases Policy aims to lower the high cost of treatment for rare diseases with increased focus on indigenous research with the help of a National Consortium to be set up with Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare as convenor.
  • A provision for financial support up to Rs. 20 lakhs under the Umbrella Scheme of Rastriya Arogya Nidhi is proposed for treatment, of those rare diseases that require a one-time treatment (diseases listed under Group 1 in the rare disease policy).
  • Beneficiaries for such financial assistance would not be limited to BPL families, but the benefit will be extended to about 40% of the population, who are eligible under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
